EVENT UPDATES!

IVY GANDHI YOUTH CAMP 2013 BY: ZENOBIA SRIBNICK

2

Sixteen kids and ten chaperones took part in this year’s action-packed Z-Camp. Held over the June 1st-2nd weekend, the 2013 Ivy Gandhi Youth Camp began on Saturday morning with greetings, setting up camp, and a few getting-to-know-you games.

After a pizza lunch, the real fun began as the campers divided into two teams and competed for points. There were a number of outdoor water games, a scavenger hunt with team challenges, and team “Olympics”. The Olympic events were a big hit with the campers as team members competed in singing nursery rhymes in opera style, reciting the alphabet backwards, holding marshmallows in their mouth while trying to talk (how many marshmallows can you fit into your mouth and say “buggy bumpers clearly?), and trying to feed a teammate a donut while blindfolded. Not surprisingly, the last two proved to be favorites, even with the chaperones, and especially for one parent in particular who gave the campers tips for the marshmallow competition for next year (sorry parents!). Events were monitored, judged and scored by the chaperones in attendance, who all took the opportunity to get to know each other and the campers, and enjoy the silliness of the afternoon activities.

In the evening, everyone headed over to the Rockland County Boulders baseball game. After eating dinner and watching the first half of the game, some time was spent at the playground in the ballpark. The kids got a second wind in the 8th inning and enjoyed dancing to the stadium music and seeing themselves on the Jumbotron. But as the game went into extra innings, the decision was made to leave early; even though it was already past 10pm, there was still more planned for the night.

Back at the Darbe Mehr, the campers and chaperones enjoyed a campfire and s’mores, and even got to watch the Boulders after-game fireworks before heading off to sleep both inside and outside. The next morning after an early breakfast, a few pickup games of soccer and basketball, and a quick cleanup, the chaperones corralled the group for a drive up to the top of scenic Bear Mountain. A visit to the top of the observatory completed the camp activities before returning to the Darbe Mehr for the June religion class. Everyone made it through to the end of the day tired but with new friendships to look forward to in the fall.

A big thank you to all of the chaperones for participating throughout the weekend and to all the parents for bringing their children! Finally, if anyone was wondering, we also learned how many marshmallows Sam Shroff can fit in his mouth and say “buggy bumpers”…..this is the kind of fun you won’t want to miss at next year’s camp!

EVENT UPDATES contd.!

MAY 4, 2013: REVLON RUN / WALK FOR WOMEN’S CANCER

United in the fight against cancer, our ZAGNY team participated for the 12th consecutive year in the 5Km Annual Revlon Run/Walk for Women's Cancers.

Cancer has affected many of our lives and on May 4th, 2013 we witnessed a sea of supporters, teams and individuals all coming together to celebrate life, honor their loved ones and walk for a cure.

Once again, under the leadership of team captain Sheroo Kanga, our small but enthusiastic ZAGNY team of 6 walkers joined thousands at the Starting Line in Times Square on the brisk Saturday morning.

Thanks to the generosity of all our donors and their continued support, ZAGNY collected $4,095 to date for this worthy cause, bringing us one step closer to finding a cure for this deadly disease.

ZAGNY looks forward to seeing many of you next year on May 3rd, 2014, in Times Square for the 17th Annual Revlon Run/Walk for Women's Cancers.

JUNE 2013: PARSEE GENERAL HOSPITAL FUNDRAISER

Yasmin and Jamshed Ghadiali organized the 27th annual fund raiser for the B.D. Petit Parsee General Hospital (PGH). However, due to property damage at their home from Hurricane Sandy, they were regrettably unable to host the annual Jashan and dinner at their residence.

Funds collected go to PGH and are to be used specifically for distributing free / subsidized medications to the poor and needy Zoroastrians. A small portion of the funds sent to the Parsi Ambulance Division are to be utilized solely for the purpose of making improvements to the ambulance and its equipment.

PGH is extremely grateful for your donations through the years which, in spite of the accelerating health care costs, enables the hospital to help many needy Zoroastrians in Mumbai who rely on the hospital for their health care.

Every donation irrespective of the amount is very important to the Hospital. Please send your donation checks payable to “ZAGNY – Critical Assistance Fund” and mention “Parsee General” or “Parsee Ambulance” in the memo line and mail to, 2686 Belcher Street, Baldwin, NY 11510-3937. This appeal is sent once a year, but the fundraiser is open year round.

To learn more about The B.D. Petit Parsee General Hospital, please visit their website at www.bdpetitparseegeneralhospital.org

BELOW ARE SOME ADDITIONAL POINTERS TO HELP TRIGGER CHARITABLE GIVING

TAX RATES AND THE RECORD STOCK MARKET MAKES THIS AN OPPORTUNE TIME FOR CHARITABLE GIVING

Keep in mind that the increased tax rates Congress enacted for 2013 translate to greater tax savings for all types of charitable gifts. Also note that the Stock Market continues to perform well and this combined with the higher tax rates is an opportune time to donate appreciated property. Therefore, please consider charitable giving now before economic uncertainties result in stock market reversing direction or Tax-Reform legislation getting enacted later in the year, which could have further consequences for Charitable Giving.

TAX ADVANTAGED CHARITABLE GIVING FOR SENIORS OVER 70.5 YEARS

Congress has exempted from 2013 income, the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from Individual Rollover Account (IRA) if such or part of the RMD amount up to a maximum of $100,000 is directly donated to a 501(c)(3) charity. Thus, if an individual donates to a charity from his or her IRA, this amount would not be included in the individual’s taxable income. As we understand, this RMD applies to an IRA account and not for RMD from a 401K account. As such one would have to Rollover from a 401K account to an IRA first before initiating the following year’s RMD from the IRA.

The RMD from your IRA is based on the IRA balance at the past year end i.e. 2013 RMD from IRA is based on the IRA balance as of December 31, 2012. If one wants to utilize this tax advantaged charitable giving in 2014 they should plan now to Rollover their 401K into an IRA before the end of the year. This is based on the expectation that Congress will extend this rule for 2014 also.

More details about this are available in IRS Publication 590, page 40, dated June 30, 2012. Please note that you must comply with the giving process as prescribed in the Publication. Please also consult your Financial or Tax Advisor for definitive guidance.

One of my readers writes “I own a rental property and I have a tenant who doesn’t pay rent and refuses to leave. What can I do?”

Landlord-tenant issues like this occur every day. Dealing with a non-rent-paying tenant can be a nightmare. The most important thing to do is not take things personally, and proceed in an upstanding and professional manner. The first step is to do nothing. It sounds counterintuitive, but in most jurisdictions you cannot legally kick out a tenant without a court order to do so.

Therefore, you should never try to physically force out a bad tenant. This includes acts like turning off the utilities or changing the locks when the tenant is out at work. Tenants have certain rights under the law, and their failure to pay rent does not erase those rights. The last thing you need is criminal charges being pressed against you because you were angry and overzealous.

The next step is to file a complaint in municipal court, requesting an order for eviction and payment of past-due rent. Although an experienced landlord might be able to handle the municipal court hearing on his/her own, a lawyer should be hired for those who rent as a source of additional income.

Assuming you are successful, the judge will issue a formal order that the tenant should move out by a certain date and pay back any past-due rent. In most instances, on the date of eviction, a local sheriff will come to the property to ensure that the tenant vacates in a peaceable manner.

For seventeen years, Tamina Daruvala has been a member of the ZAGNY community. She first joined at the age of six, attending religion classes each month with her two younger sisters, Ava and Sanaya. The three grew up together in Scarsdale, New York with their parents, Toos and Hira. Tamina attended the Horrace Mann School until graduation in 2007. She then continued her education at Oberlin College, where she double majored in Sociology and Psychology with honors. After graduating in 2011, Tamina worked in a neuroscience lab for a year, doing Affective Neuroscience research in Boston, Massachusetts.

“I used college as an experience to explore a number of different disciplines and get hands on work with different internships and summer positions,” said Tamina in regard to her college encounters. “I used it as a tool to figure out what I wanted to do subsequently.”

Now 23 years old, Tamina has decided to attend law school at University of Michigan this fall, with the aspiration of becoming a lawyer or doing something law-related in the public interest field.

Tamina deemed her ZAGNY experience a positive one when saying, “For me ZAGNY has been about having a social experience that’s really rich and varied, as opposed to the kind of people you would automatically run in to in your everyday life. For example, it’s obviously very difficult to come across Zoroastrians in your everyday life. Being exposed to a number of them at a very early age, helped me not just in terms of being able to interact with other people of all ages and classes, but things like learning Gujarati, learning different cultural value systems, and in a way being able to understand and appreciate my roots. I think that’s something that’s served me really well through the years.”

Good luck, Tamina, in your next chapter!
