Retired General Russel Honore’ grew up across the Mississippi Riv-er from Port Hudson, and has fam-ily ties to the Zachary and Feliciana areas. Honore’ attend Southern University with the intention of be-coming a farmer after receiving a B.S. degree in Agriculture. How-ever, while at South-ern, Honore’ joined the ROTC and received a Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army upon graduation in 1971.
After a very few years, Honore’ decided that the Army offered him great opportunities to pursue, and 37 years 3 months and 3 days after receiving his Commis-sion, he retired as a Lt. General with three stars. General Honore’ is prob-

Recently, General Honore’ pub-lished a book titled Leadership For The New Normal – A Short
In Leadership. Written by Lt. General Russel L. Honore’ and is a must read book for everyone, for both business man and military person-nel, as well as teenag-ers and college age men and women, and anyone who wants to prepare for their future in a serious manner. The book offers a short course on what we are facing in the fu-ture, and the desperate need for true leadership in all walks of life.
At a lecture at the Old State Capi-tol in Baton Rouge on March 21, 2013, General Honore’ had this to say about his first few minutes on the
ground near the Super Dome upon assuming command of the Katrina Task Force:
“I flew in on a Blackhawk heli-copter from an off-shore ship. As soon as I got out of my ride, I saw all these troops and law enforcement walking around with loaded guns pointing at people. I hollered, what are you guys, stupid, these people need help not intimidation.’’
He recalled a recent incident whereby he was speaking to stu-dents at a Louisiana University.
General Honore’, in his book, Leadership in the New Normal which he calls a “A Short Course,’’ touches on many of the basic quali-ties of true leadership and its role in the future. His dedication of the book is: “I dedicate this book to the people of the United States of Amer-ica, to those who understand that freedom isn’t free, that it is based on selfless service to others. And I salute those who are earnestly com-mitted to lifting up all of human-
kind, in our country and around the world.’’
In his nine chapter book, Gen-eral Honore’ makes two profound statements, which in my opinion are game changers in what we know as leadership. First he says: “We are born free by good fortune. To live free is a privilege. To die free is an obligation. Each American has the obligation to keep America free for the next generation.’’
The second principle that jumped out at me was his description of lead-ership characteristics using an Army axiom, “Your audio and your video must match!’’
In less than 200 pages, General Honore’ has articulated a world of common sense dynamic principles of leadership in any walk of life in-cluding family life. Although the General characterizes marriage and family life as “collaboration,’’ he

Mayor-President Melvin L. “Kip” Holden hosted a ribbon cut-ting ceremony for the Green Light Plan’s Mount Pleasant Intersec-tion Improvements (U.S. 61 and LA 64) project Friday, April 12 at 10 a.m. at Zachary City Hall, 4650 Main Street.
This ribbon cutting marks the completion of a key roadway con-struction project for the Green Light Plan designed to improve the intersection’s capacity while laying the groundwork for future growth in the area.
“The opening of another criti-cal intersection expanded through the Green Light Plan shows us just how important this program is to breaking up the gridlock and pro-moting interconnectivity across some of the fastest growing areas of East Baton Rouge Parish, like
the city of Zachary,” Mayor-Pres-ident Melvin “Kip” Holden said. “The more our great city and parish continue to expand, the more sup-porting infrastructure is needed to help sustainably guide this growth - and this project was designed to do exactly that.”
Boone Services, Inc. of Baton Rouge completed the $1.1 mil-lion construction project that in-cludes a dedicated right-turn lane for northbound U.S. 61 motorists, a widened segment of LA High-way 64 (Mount Pleasant Road) for westbound motorists approaching U.S. 61 that replaces the previous two-lane undivided segment of roadway into a four-lane divided roadway with a raised median, and upgraded traffic signals at the in-tersection.

3rd Annual Superhero 5K Now RegisteringOn May 11, the 3nd Annual Zach-
ary SuperHero 5K and 1mile Fun Run will be held to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Proceeds from this event will be used to support the mission of the American Cancer Society. The races will be held in the heart of the Zachary Historic District.
This event targets everyone from professional runners to families and children from all around Zachary and the Baton Rouge Metro area. Aside from the 5K, the One Mile Fun Run/Walk is a one-mile course for children to encourage family participation. Registration is currently open at ac-tive.com.
With the funds raised through events such as these, the American Cancer Society has been able to pro-vide much needed services to cancer patients and their families. The Ameri-can Cancer Society combines an un-yielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suf-fering from cancer. As a global grass-roots force of more than three million volunteers, ACS fights for every birth-day threatened by every cancer in ev-
ery community. These efforts include helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rally-ing communities worldwide to join the fight. In fact the last chapter of his book is titled: “Save your best leadership for when you get home.’’
The General’s key points in this final chapter of the book are: (1). Be careful not to spend so much time and energy in provid-ing for your fam-ily that you lose your family. (2). Leading at work is easy compared to leading at home. (3). A family has a mission to work as a team. Families need leading be-cause kids need teaching. A parent’s proper role is to lead, to teach and build a strong family unit. (4). Par-ents should remember: When you walk in your front door, you’re not in command but in collaboration. (5). Parents shouldn’t try to lead their families like officers commanding their troops; however, The Warrior Ethos used in the military works well to build a strong family team.

Lt. General Russel Honore has had a distinguished Military and
Post Military ca-reer. In addition to leading the U.S. Dept. of Defense response to Hurri-canes Katrina and Rita in 2005, he was a command-ing general in the Middle East and in Korea. He served in a variety of com-mand and staff po-sitions focused on Defense Support of Civil Authori-ties and Homeland Defense. A highly decorated soldier,
he received numerous awards and medals, including the Defense Dis-tinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Ku-wait Liberation Medal. Today he is a business consultant, public speaker, Senior Scientist for the Gallup Or-ganization, and CNN contributor on topics related to disaster prepared-ness. He holds a B.S. Degree in Vo-cational Agriculture from Southern University and an M.A. in Human Resources from Troy State. A native of Lakeland, Louisiana in Pointe Coupee Parish, he and his wife Bev-erly have lived in Zachary, but cur-rently reside in Baton Rouge. They have four grown children.
2nd Annual “Rockin’ and Roasting on The River” this Weekend in New Roads
The Pointe Coupee Chamber of Commerce is planning the 2nd An-nual, “Rockin’ and Roasting on The River”, that is scheduled for April 26 and 27 in downtown New Roads at Morrison Parkway. This event will be the 2nd Officially Sanctioned Barbecue Cook-off in our area with fun activities for the whole family.
The celebration starts on Friday, April 26 with Live Music by Dale Sellars & Back Roads Band at 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. with lots of food, drinks and fun.
On Saturday, April 27 the day starts off at 8 a.m. with the “2nd Of-ficially Sanctioned Barbecue Cook-off”, live entertainment kicks off at 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. with food, drinks and fun!
On Saturday entertainment for kids includes fun jumps from 9:30
a.m. until 4 p.m., and a “Kids Fish-ing Tournament” starting at 8 a.m. and lasting until around 11 a.m. that’s going to be a blast.
The event will appeal to people of all ages on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Stop by to enjoy the live entertainment with the Ros-coe Chenier Band, lots of great food and fun.

Arts Alive 2013: Talented Theatre and Visual Arts Showcase set for April 26
The Zachary Community School District Talented Arts Program will present Arts Alive 2013: A Talented Theatre And Visual Arts Showcase on April 26 in the Zachary High School Visual and Performing Arts Center. The showcase will feature work created by Talented Theatre and Talented Art students in grades first through twelfth.
The visual art gallery will open for exhibition beginning at 6 p.m. Seating for Talented Theatre perfor-mances will begin at 6:45 p.m. with a curtain time of 7 p.m.

Lane Regional Medical Center named Michele LeBlanc, a Regis-tered Nurse in Lane’s Wound Cen-ter, as the Employee of the Year. She received the honor at the hospital’s annual “Employee of the Year Lun-cheon” at Sammy’s Grill in Zachary.
LeBlanc has worked at Lane for 5 years and was recognized for her dedication and outstanding work. She was named Employee of the Month in September 2012 and was selected Employee of the Year from the twelve monthly honorees in 2012.
“This is such a shock!” said LeBlanc. “I am quite humbled and thankful for such an honor!”
“Michelle is an excellent nurse with a personality to match,” said Jennifer Johnson, Chief Nursing Of-ficer. “She is very knowledgeable and passionate about wound care and the progress of her patients. She is an incredible asset to nursing ser-vices.”
LeBlanc, a native of Houma, is a graduate of Nicholls State Univer-sity in Thibodaux. She received her Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse certification from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She and her husband, Michael, reside in Denham Springs and have one son, Benja-min. She also has four step-children
and two step-grandchildren. She enjoys spending quality time with her family and visiting relatives in Houma and Texas. LeBlanc attends Abundant Life Church in Denham Springs and is involved with mis-sionary work in Mexico.

Lane Regional Hospital earns Quality Respiratory Care Recognition for 7th Year
Lane Regional Medical Cen-ter has earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) under a national program aimed at help-ing patients and families make in-formed decisions about the qual-ity of the respiratory care services available in hospitals.
This is the 7th straight year Lane Regional has earned this presti-gious award. Approximately 700 hospitals in the U.S. (about 15%) received this award. Hospitals earn-ing the QRCR designation ensure patient safety by agreeing to adhere to a strict set of criteria governing their respiratory care services.
To quality for recognition, Lane Regional provided documentation showing it meets the following con-ditions:
• All respiratory therapists em-ployed by the hospital to deliver bedside respiratory care services are either legally recognized by the state as competent to provide respi-ratory care services or hold the CRT or RRT credential.
• Respiratory therapists are available 24 hours.
• Other personnel qualified to perform specific respiratory proce-dures and the amount of supervi-sion required for personnel to carry out specific procedures must be designated in writing.
• A doctor of medicine or os-teopathy is designated as medical director of respiratory care services.
• Hospital policy prohibits the routine delivery of medicated aero-sol treatments utilizing small vol-ume nebulizers, metered dose inhal-ers, or intermittent positive pressure treatments to multiple patients si-multaneously. Circumstances under which this practice is permitted is defined by policy.
• Use a process that periodically compares performance of your re-spiratory department on efficiency and quality metrics with similar de-partments for the purpose of identi-fying an achieving best practice.
“I am very proud of our Respira-tory Therapists for providing the ex-ceptional care this award reflects,” said Mike Hlavac, RRT, director of Lane Rehab Services.
Respiratory therapists are spe-cially trained health care profes-sionals who work under physician’s orders to provide a wide range of breathing treatments and other ser-vices to people with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cys-tic fibrosis, lung cancer, AIDS and other lung or lung-related condi-tions. They also care for premature infants and are key members of life-saving response teams.
The QRCR program was started in 2003 by the American Association for Respiratory Care, a membership organization representing more than 50,000 health professionals involved in respiratory care nationwide.

Register Zachary’s Young entrepreneurs for Lemonade DayLemonade Day Louisiana is
coming up on Saturday, May 4 and now is the time to get your young entrepreneurs prepared to get to work. Lemonade Day is a free, fun, experiential learning program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their own business—a lemonade stand. It began in Hous-ton, Texas in 2007. Since then it has grown from 2,700 kids to 120,000 kids in 31 cities across America and Canada in 2011—including ours!
Lemonade Day was brought to Louisiana in 2010 by Entrepreneurs John Georges (CEO of Georges En-terprises) and Todd Graves (CEO of Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers). John and Todd both received their first taste of business by operating their own lemonade stand as kids.

Last Of A Dying Breed Riding Club participated in the Horse show at Southern University’s M.A. Ed-mond Livestock Arena on Hwy 61 North. The event took place on Sat. April 13,2013. The trail ride began at noon and the riders rode from Baker, La. to Zachary , La. and back. The ride took four hours to complete.
While on this ride the horse riding clubs were being judged in several catagories. The catago-ries included the on most riders on horseback, the most organized horse club and the best dress horse club. The Last Of A Dying Breed Riding Club, came home with 2- trophies , Most Organized and Most Members on horseback. Also the small youth riders took part in other games and event at the arena and brought home several medals.
In addition, the club will be at-tending the upcoming K and L Ro-deo Production sponsored by Gerry Lane Chevrolet at the 5th Annual Black Rodeo in Gonzales, Louisi-ana on Sat. May 4, 2013 at 7 p.m. at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center.

He was a member of Zachary United Methodist Church. He was inducted into the Danville High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

Coach Terry Sullivan of Zachary, La. took his basketball team, Team Elite, to a third championship game. Team Elite came up with the victory over the undefeated Celtics, landing them a 3-peat championship record on March 17th 2013. Sullivan’s two sons are on the team he coaches. Their home branch is the A.C.Lewis YMCA. The champi-onship game was played at the C.B.Pennington YMCA. Team Elite players are from the Zachary and Baton Rouge communities. Zachary High School’s Peyton McCulloch shoots a 2 under par 70 to claim the overall winner at the 2013 Sulphur Invitational. The field was open to Louisi-ana high school golf teams or individual that wanted to prepare for the seasons 2013 regional and state upcoming tournaments. The tournament director thought it would be a good opportunity to see the competition from around the state, and that is exactly what it was. The field was stacked with 75 of the top golfers from Louisiana, including five members of the Zachary golf team. This was Peyton’s second under par win for 2013. He also shot a 2 under par in the Louisiana Amateur Qualifier on March 18th at the Woodlands Golf Club in Lafayette. He is current-ly being recruited for a Golf Scholarship by Nicholls State, Southeastern, and University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Dyslexia Program at Slaughter elementary Supported by Masonic Lodges Statewideby FRank lemings
Slaughter Masonic Lodge 475 took its first steps in establishing a dyslexia program in Slaughter El-ementary school in 2010. The first class, which began in May of 2011, will graduate in September of this year.
Slaughter Lodge is a small Lodge of 26 members, so fund-ing classes quickly became diffi-cult. The Lodge had full funds for two classes and partial funds for a third class. With the help of Plains Lodge 135 in Zachary and Olive Lodge 52 in Clinton, classes three and four were soon fully funded as well. In March of this year, classes five and six were funded by gener-ous donations from Phoenix Lodge 38 in Natchitoches, La. and the Si-lent Brothers Lodge 146 in Coush-atta, La.
The Slaughter Lodge consid-ers the generosity and cooperation “a blessing” as these children will use what they have learned in these classes throughout their lifetime. The teachers were pleasantly sur-prised with the progress–students

Imahara Honored for Service to Nation and Nature Conservationby beth dawson
Sunday, April 7 was a day of cel-ebration, congratulations and cama-raderie at Bishop Jackson Hall of Grace Episcopal Church in St. Fran-cisville. The Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) 177 and the Alexander Stirling Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revo-lution combined forces to present a Special Service Award to Mr. Walter Imahara.
Pat Allmond, World War II vet-eran and a member of the MOPH, presented the award to Mr. Imahara for his donation of 75 crepe myrtle trees to the new Louisiana National Cemetery. As Allmond stated, “His thoughtfulness will live on through the trees planted as a result of his generosity.”
Commander Tommy Jarreau and Pat Allmond, on behalf of the Red-stick Chapter 177 MOPH, then pre-sented a Special Recognition Award to Imahara for his lifelong contribu-tion to the nation and for his service to veterans.
Lauren Pourciau, Alexander Stir-ling Conservation committee mem-ber, then bestowed Imahara with the
prestigious National Society Daugh-ters of the American Revolution Conservation Award Medal and NS-DAR Conservation Award Certifica-tion for his achievements in devel-oping two beautiful arboretums and nature center in the St. Francisville area. The NSDAR Conservation Medal is awarded to an adult with a distinguished volunteer conserva-
tion record. The criteria for issu-ance included outstanding efforts in wildlife and nature centers as well as using native plantings to attract birds and wildlife while providing them with food, water, cover and places to raise their young. Imahara is an energetic force in the com-munity for promoting these princi-pals. Well known for his architec-tural landscape designs, Imahara constructed the beautiful, 54-acre Imahara’s Botanical Gardens during his retirement years. Carole Gloger, Louisiana state conservation chair-man for the DAR, was on hand for the presentation.
After receiving both awards, Imahara gave a brief talk about his family. He was the sixth of nine children, born to Japanese Ameri-can parents. The family was locked up in an internment camp during WW II for three and a half years. He also served in the army for three and a half years.
“My father always told us to get an education and serve your coun-try,” Imahara remembered.

Bains Can DayApril 24, 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Starting at 7:30 a.m. community members, parents and anyone interested can drop off aluminum cans for recycling at the front entrance of Bains Elementary to help raise funds for field trips for students. Anyone dropping off cans can mention a student/teacher name and credit for the cans will go to those individuals as the class with most cans donated receives a reward party. The school is located at 9792 Bains Rd. in St. Francisville.
ART-ini FundraiserApril 25, 5-9 p.m.
Join the Arthritis Association of Louisiana in a night of food and fun. Local restaurants will be competing for the best martini of the evening! Each restaurant will create their own unique twist on a specialty martini to help raise support for Arthritis Awareness. Whichever martini collects the most donations will be crowned the People’s Choice winner. Live music by The Tricky Dickies, Silent and Live auctions, heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served. Attire is casual to cocktail.

Angola Prison Museum Golf Tournament | May 3, 8 a.m.
The LA State Penitentiary Museum Foundation will host a Golf Tournament at Angola beginning at 8 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. Tournament costs are $100/player or $400/team and include 18 holes of golf, golf cart, continental breakfast, lunch and tours of the Angola Museum and Penitentiary. There will be a 4-person scramble, with prizes for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place, hole-in-one, longest drive, closest to the pin, putting contest at noon and a silent auction. Rockin’ on the Creek, a benefit for child literacy put on by the WF Women’s Service League, will kick off with music at 6 p.m. at the Bluffs on Thompson Creek.
