The Zachary Fire Department cel-ebrated the delivery of a new custom pumper fire truck as well as com-panion tools and equipment that will further aid their efforts in protecting the community.
The truck, manufactured by Fer-rara Fire Apparatus, Inc of Holden, La, was obtained with $478,562 in federal Community Development Grant Block funds from the state Of-fice of Community Development’s Disaster Recovery Unit.
The new fire truck has both an increased ability to haul water and a more powerful internal pump ca-pacity than the trucks that were used during the Hurricane Gustav re-sponse. These features are critical in the remote and unincorporated areas of the city, where there is a greater variance in the spacing of fire hy-drants, reduced water resources and hydrant pressures.
Mayor David Amhrein said that
“For us, it’s like Christmas in March. As we continue to grow our city, public safety is our number one pri-ority and this piece of equipment will allow us to only improve what we do now. Amrhein and Fire Chief Danny Kimble believe that the city stands to benefit from the addition of this equipment. With a better-equipped fire department, all citizens of Zach-ary will be served on an everyday ba-sis as well as during times of crisis, such as a natural disaster.
“More than half of the $1 billion in CDBG funding we received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development went to local governments, because we knew you best understood where your recov-ery dollars were needed,” said OCD Executive Director Pat Forbes. “This new fire truck will strengthen Zacha-ry’s fire insurance rating and provide needed additional support to respond to a growing, thriving community.”
New Pumper Strengthens Response CapabilitiesLane Starting Construction on Radiation Oncology Center
by NaliNi RaghavaN goRe
Two and a half years after talks with Baton Rouge General’s Presi-dent and CEO Bill Holman first be-gan, Lane announced at the Rotar-ian’s weekly luncheon last Thursday that Zachary will be home to a new radiation oncology center through a partnership between Lane and Baton Rouge General.
Lane RMC CEO Randy Olson ex-plained to the assembled group that the final documents had been signed with the construction company just the day before. The new center will be located at the rear of Lane’s phy-sicians office complex across from the post office. Existing office space will be renovated for intake and ex-amination purposes. The actual ra-diation procedure will take place in a
newly constructed “vault,” a fortress of a room whose walls, floors and ceilings must be constructed with six feet of concrete to contain the radia-tion.
The total project cost is $3.5 million, with 1.5 dedicated to new construction and the remaining ded-icated to purchasing a linear accel-erator, bringing advanced 3D radia-tion technology directly to residents in Zachary and the surrounding area.
Radiation oncology uses high en-ergy radiation to control, shrink or kill cancerous cells and is often used in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy. Very specialized equipment and analyses are required to offer this procedure; however, the
Lane’s new radiation oncology center will be built behind its existing physicians’ office complex located across from the Zachary Post Office.

All teams will practice at the 39th St. park and play home games at Zachary High School. Head Coaches Jimmy Milazzo, O.J. procedure itself only averages two minutes. Up till now, the closest facilities that offered these services were located in Baton Rouge. In eight months, which is the estimated construction time line for the center, cancer victims in the Zachary area will no longer have to travel long distances to receive radiation ther-apy.
Lane has dedicated $1 million to the $3.5 million project to be used to purchase the linear accelerator and
to provide cancer treatment services. The not-for-profit hospital hopes to raise the additional funds through its Foundation. Citing decreased Medicare and Medicaid payments, Dr. William Russell, a partnering physician in the oncology center project, explained that the hospital will be relying on the community to bridge the financial gap. Founda-tion representatives pointed out that a strong local hospital helps existing businesses and industries attract and retain qualified employees and that the hospital’s $29 million annual payroll helps to support and grow the local economy.
The architectural rendering of the Lane’s proposed radiation oncology center, a ‘vault ‘with 6 foot concrete walls, floor and ceiling.
