What is TOEFL
▪ TOEFL stands for “Test of English as a
foreign language. It’s an exam that
measures English language skills in
academic settings.

Benefits:
▪ get into overseas university
If English is not your first language then you’ll probably be required to take the
TOEFL (or a similar test)
▪ get a job or promotion
If you want to qualify for a new position that requires English skills, a high
TOEFL score can help.

TOEFL scores can fulfill language requirements for Australian visas and some

Basic Test Format
▪ TOEFL is all about communication.
▪ Four skills
▪ English in use (not memorization)
▪ Real world English (communicating in English)
▪ No grammar section
▪ Academic English
▪ iBT is the common form of the test. It is much more common than the
PBT.
▪ PBT is a paper-based test offered in countries with little internet. It has
a different format, but very few people take it.
▪ CBT is already gone.
▪ ITP is a test given in classes to evaluate students’ skills.

Listening comprehension
It measures the ability to understand English. The oral features of the language are
stressed, and the problems tested include vocabulary and idiomatic expression as
well as special grammatical constructions.
Structure and written expression
It measures recognition of selected structural and grammatical points in standard
written English. The language tested is formal, rather than conversational. The topics
of the sentences are of a general academic nature so that individuals in specific fields
of study or from specific national or linguistic groups have no particular advantage.

zReading comprehension
It measures the ability to read and understand short passages that are similar in topic and style to those that students are likely to encounter in colleges and universities.
Examinees read a variety of short passages on academic subjects and answer several questions about each passage. The questions test information that is stated in or implied by the passage, as well as knowledge of some of the specific words as they are used in the passage.

Pro-TEFL Tips and Strategies
▪Listening Comprehension
Become as familiar with the English language as you can, including learning vocabulary words and idioms.
Practice working with the language in everyday life; this will help you become more comfortable with it and
understand it better. Listen to music, radio, television, movies and online broadcast.
▪Structure and Written Expression
Think about the simplest, clearest way to express an idea. If an answer choice sounds awkward or overly
complicated, chances are good that it’s wrong. Brush up on your English grammar for this part of the test.
▪Reading Comprehension
Skim the passage first to get a sense of the main idea. You can always go back and look up specifics. Answer
the questions that ask about vocabulary words and details first. Then work on questions that ask you about
the main idea or require you to make inferences.
Reading is the best way to improve your vocabulary. English-language reading materials, magazines, books
and websites are always available. Choose your favorites. Try some academic material to prepare for
communicating at the university level in English.

The passages are lengthy readings (600 to 700 words
each) on academic topics.
The questions may ask about vocabulary, pronoun,
reference, the meanings of sentences, where
sentences can be inserted, stated and unstated details,
inferences, rhetorical purpose, and overall organization
of ideas.
zTest Strategy and Tips (Phillips, 2006)
▪ Be familiar with the directions.
▪ Do not worry if a reading passage is on a topic that is not familiar to you.
▪ Do not spend too much time reading the passages.
▪ Skim each passage.
▪ Look at each question to determine type of question.
▪ Choose the best answer.
▪ Do not spend too much time on a question you are completely unsure of.
▪ Monitor the time carefully.
▪ Guess to complete the section before time is up.
