да The broad aim of the environment activities of the UnitedNations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is tosafeguard the environment and human health, and topromote sustainable development in its member States.The practical aim is to reduce pollution so as to minimizeenvironmental damage and avoid compromisingenvironmental conditions for future generations. To this end,UNECE has negotiated five environmental conventions:
Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution(Geneva, 1979)Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in aTransboundary Context (Espoo, 1991)Convention on the Protection and Use of TransboundaryWatercourses and International Lakes (Helsinki, 1992)Convention on the Transboundary Effects of IndustrialAccidents (Helsinki, 1992)Convention on Access to Information, Public Participationin Decision-making and Access to Justice inEnvironmental Matters (Aarhus, 1998).
The Conventions have been supplemented by a number ofprotocols. The governing bodies of these treaties areserviced by the UNECE secretariat, which also helps them tomonitor the implementation of the treaties.www.unece.org/env/teia
