German Military PolizeiSustained combat operations, whether offensive or defen-sive, consume enormous quantities of fuel, food, medicalsupplies, and ammunition. Without secure and continuoussupplies, field units would very soon exhaust their capability
to fight.Operation bagration
However, by 1944, these security units, out of necessity, began to increase their responsibilities. With the German
Army placed more and more on the defensive, Sicherungsand Feldgendarmerie found themselves closer and closer tothe front lines. Tis forced them to become front line troopsin the case of Sicherungsand battlefield security in the caseof Feldgendarmerie.
By the time of Operation Bagration in June 1944, Sicherungsdivisions, who had been fighting the partisan efforts in
Byelorussia, were thrown into the front lines in a desper-ate effort to stem the tide of the advancing Soviet Army.Tey found themselves in Kampfgruppen, or battle groups,
with the remnants of infantry, panzergrenadier, or panzerdivisions that had been fighting and retreating against themassive Soviet offensive.
Feldgendarmeriealso found themselves in a determined effortto halt the retreat. Tey were ordered to keep the combattroops from fleeing westward away from the Red onslaught.Given the authority to immediately shoot deserters theFeldgendarmeriesoon reaped the ire of their soldiers fear anddesperation. Referred to as Feldmuseor field mice by their
contemporaries they became despised figures of the collaps-ing Tird Reich.
Neither were trained or equipped for the duties they facedduring Operation Bagration. Placed in a no win situation,Sicherungs and Feldgendarmerie became cannon fodderfor the Germans and at best, a speed bump for the Soviet
Army.
Page 2
GERMAN REAR-AREA SECURITYFrom 1939 to 1943, while the German Army spread acrossEurope, more and more Europeans fell under their control.
A number of different formations became responsible for thelaw enforcement, security, and troop movement throughoutthe expanding Reich. Some were civilian police units, other
were military or SS units.
Tese Security Units originated from a variety of backgroundsbut all were essentially organized to keep order and discipline
within occupied areas. From the military perspective twospecific formations were organized to meet two specific armyrequirements. Tese were Sicherungs, or Security Divisionsand Feldgendarmerie, or Field Police.
Security Missions
Sicherungs divisions were organized exactly like regularinfantry divisions without the heavy support weapons. Tisallowed them to conduct military operations against parti-sans and provide local security behind the lines for rail androad transportation networks.
Feldgendarmeriewere more in the line of a traditional militarypolice unit. Assigned specifically to individual military divi-sions they provided security, order, and general law enforce-ment for the military unit to which they were assigned. Tis
would include mapping and controlling march and supplyroutes for their supported field army. Tey would also holdand process prisoners of war taken by their combat units.
Combat Supportogether these forces provided an extremely importantsupport function in keeping the field armies combat ready.Te ability to keep supply, transportation, and communi-cation routes open is essential for combat units to remaineffective.

Organized to provide a blocking force to keep the Soviets out ofOssipovichi, the Bergen Blocking Formation or Sperrverband,
was committed without heavy weapons except artillery. Just asthe battle around Bobruisk and Ossipovichi came to a head
the Bergen Sperrverband was reinforced with the first arrivingelements of the 12. Panzerdivision.
wo companies from the25. Panzerregiment(the 1stand the 4th)were immediately subordinated to the Bergen Sperrverband. On 28 June, additional elements of the 12. Panzerdivisionarrived and control of the Kampfgruppe was transferred toLieutenant General Lindig of the 307. Artillery.
Now, Kampfgruppe Lindig was responsible for holding theline between Marina Gorka and Slutsk. Reinforced with thepanzers of the 12. Panzerdivision, it was expected to hold afront of about 100 kilometres.
Orders then came to have the 12. Panzerdivisionattempt torelieve Bobruisk. Additionally, conflicting orders came forKampfgruppe Lindig to counterattack to the southeast.
Attempting to accomplish both missions left theirprimary mission of holding precarious at best.
Te two counterattacks were successful in tem-porarily halting the Soviet attack on Minskbut Soviet success at Slutsk forced theKampfgruppeto withdraw westwardtowards Baranovichi.

On 4 July 1944 Soviet forward detachments threatenedto cut the Minsk-Molodeczno rail lines that providedsupplies and a route of retreat for the German 4. Armee.Te 221. Sicherungsdivision under General Lendil wastasked to keep the line open.
As reinforcements began to arrive in Molodeczno theywere immediately assigned to the221. Sicherungsdivisionunder the banner of Kampfgruppe Lendil to supporttheir mission. Te Kampfgruppeincluded elements of the170. Infanteriedivision(a WalkreDivision) and the 731.

Tis ad hoc formation lasted but a few days before it wasincorporated into Kampfgruppe Metz. Ultimately theseforces were placed under the command of General derPanzertruppenvon Saucken.

Tis new group was ordered to takeover the mission of Kampfgruppe Lendiland keep the railopen between Minsk and Molodeczno.
With the initial success of Kampfgruppe Lendilin keepingthe rail line open the new KampfgruppeMetz was orderedeastward to assist the other three Kampfgruppenof the
5. Panzerdivision while they fought a withdrawingaction from Borizov.
With the fall of Minsk and the continued advance ofthe 5th Guards ank Army, Kampfgruppe Metz
found itself fighting its way back towardsVilnius with the rest of Kampfgruppe von

One of the first groups to be organized in an attemptto halt the Soviet offensive during Operation Bagration
was Panzergruppe Hoppe from 3. Panzerarmee. In thearea around the town of Svencionys, Panzergruppe Hoppeengaged and destroyed two enemy battalions capturing aconsiderable amount of weapons and equipment.
Teir counterattack achieved a surprisingly deep penetra-tion against the Soviets and allowed for the line to stabi-lise for a bit. Te Panzergruppe contained StuG assaultguns and Hornisse tank hunters.

Security platoons were formed by integrating military policeforces, convalescing infantryman, and older recruits notphysically fit for frontline duty. Tough trained in localpolice work with some combat capability against localpartisan forces they were totally unprepared to face the bruntof the Red Army.
Te Sicherungs platoons were ill-equipped with sufficientfirepower to hold off Soviet front-line units. Possessing onlyrifle teams, Sicherungsplatoons are hard-pressed to hold offadvancing enemy infantry. Tey have no offensive capabilitybut they are still fully-manned and can be used to hold keytransportation nodes if they have sufficient outside support.
Te Sicherungskompanie was primarily used to hunt downpartisans and rear area troops retreating from the front lines. However, as the front lines in Byelorussia crumbled Germansecurity forces were thrust into the front lines in a desper-ate effort to stem the Red tide. Security forces often foundthemselves confronting mechanised forces with little organicheavy support. Teir only hope of halting enemy advances
was by receiving direct support from local Panzer Divisions.
A Sicherungskompaniepossessed some light support but anyreal hope of success would require immediate support from
whatever counterattacking mechanised forces available. ASicherungskompanie was also responsible for guarding therail and roadways behind the lines but swiftly advancingSoviet spearheads sometimes forced German security forcesto build a hasty defence and attempt to hold until heavysupport could arrive.

Armoured Car Patrols are Reconnaissance Platoons.
Supporting your Sicherungskompaniewith an armoured carpatrol provides a reconnaissance capability as well as a lightmobile counterattack force against partisans, light enemyreconnaissance, or mounted infantry.
Attaching an infantry gun platoon to your security forces willgive you additional direct and indirect fire support. Tey canbolster your defence while enhancing your ability to hit the
enemy before they can close in on your Sicherungsplatoons.Dont forget their smoke capability to hide your movementuntil you can get your counterattack forces into position.

As the main threat against security forces came from lightarmoured vehicles the older 3.7cm PaK36 was deemed suf-ficient for the Sicherungskompanie. While this remained truefor advancing enemy mechanized transports it proved insuf-ficient in stopping enemy armour columns in 1944.
You can use the Stielgranateammunition in a last ditch effortto stop enemy tanks but they must be at close range and it
works best if your units are dug-in and in cover.

Feldgendarmerie
Feldgendarmerie (Field Police) platoons must makeCombat Attachments to Infantry Platoons or GunPlatoons with all their sections. If a German platoon con-taining a Feldgendarmerieteam that is In Command failsits Motivation est to rally from being Pinned Down, toCounterattack in an assault, or to pass a Platoon MoraleCheck (but not to launch an assault against tank or anyother Motivation est), you may immediately Destroyany other Infantry or Gun team from the platoon withinCommand Distance of the Feldgendarmerieteam and re-roll the Motivation est.
If you roll a 1 for the new Motivation est, however, the soldiers are pushed past the point of breaking andrevolt against the Feldgendarmerie! In this case theFeldgendarmerieteam is Destroyed as well.
If a Company Commander joins a platoon witha Feldgendarmerie team attached, the Company
Commander overrules the Feldgendarmerie capability.Tus the unit may only use the Company Commandersability to reroll motivation.
As with any unit, a German platoon Pinned Down byDefensive Fire fails to assault its target. It must wait untilits next turn to rally as normal.
With losses mounting and reinforcements coming fromnon-line units, the ability of German units to hold the linebecame harder and harder. In a questionable attempt tokeep front line units from retreating, the Feldgendarmerie
were ordered to prevent deserters, traitors, and cowardsfromforsaking their duties to the Fatherland.
o accomplish this directive the Feldgendarmerie wouldposition themselves behind the front lines and attempt tostop German units from retreating. Tey had strict orders toshoot any retreating German personnel.
Tis tactic was not always effective. Te presence of Germanofficers within the retreating formations would preclude theFeldgendarmerie from carrying out their orders.

Grenadiers
Walkre Regiments were organized like regular GrenadierRegiments without heavy weapon support. Tey wereassigned as Home Guard units in Germany and as such weretrained but had never faced combat.
When infantry divisions began to disappear rapidly underSoviet attack the Walkre Regiments were sent east as re-placements. Since they arrived with all their weapons and infull regiments they were immediately assigned to supplementdepleted infantry divisions.
Replacements
Tis would allow an infantry division to keep one regimentof veterans in reserve while having two regiments of Walkrereplacements in front. Tey could also integrate remainingveterans within the Walkre Regiments to provide leader-ship and training.
Tough the idea seemed feasible in practice the swift de-struction of infantry divisions during Operation Bagrationsaw the Walkre Regiments hastily assigned under infantrydivisions that had been severely depleted.
Kampfgruppe Lendil221. Sicherungsdivision170. Infanteriedivision731. Panzerjger Battalion
Te 1065. Grenadier Regiment, one of the first WalkreRegiments to reach the front, was immediately attached tothe 170. Infanteriedivisionas it was hurriedly reforming atMolodeczno just prior to the fall of Minsk. Its first missionseemed wholly appropriate for a Home Defence unit.Tey were to assist the 221. Sicherungsdivisionas part ofKampfgruppe Lendilin keeping the rail line open betweenMinsk and Molodeczno.
Events however overcame their initial mission as theSoviet spearheads began to threaten not only the Minsk-Molodeczno rail line but the entire area northwest ofMinsk. o this effect, the regiment found itself in a frontline combat struggle with Soviet mechanised and armouredformations.

Remnants of the 14.and299. Infanteriedivisionswere married with the 1068.and 1069. Grenadier(Walkre)regiments near Molodeczno. With these newunits, Kampfgruppe Metzgrew to become one of fourKampfgruppenunderKampfgruppe von Saucken.
It incorporated Kampfgruppe Lendilwith additionalunits and was sent eastward to assist the other threeKampfgruppenof the 5. Panzerdivisionin their attemptsto halt the Soviet offensive northeast of Minsk near theByelorussian town of Borizov.
Tough unsuccessful in stopping the Soviet offensive,Kampfgruppe von Sauckenheld up the Soviet advancelong enough to allow many units of the 4. Armeetoescape encirclement at Minsk.
Kampfgruppen
In essence, though the infantry divisions retained theirsupport and headquarters units, its combat units were moreand more made up of Walkre regiments. Tough fullymanned, these Walkre Regiments lacked the experienceand heavy weapons to stop the advancing Soviet army whohad just decimated the regular infantry regiments.
Some Walkre Regiments were thrown into Kampfgruppenby themselves but most were attached to existing InfantryDivisions. If the division survived through the summer of1944, they formally picked up their Walkre regiments
when the division was eventually reconstituted.
Walkre regiments were some of the first reinforcements toreach the eastern front during Operation Bagration. Tey
were quickly integrated into the retreating infantry divisions
to form Kampfgruppen in a hasty attempt to halt the RedArmy.

Veteran Tank-Hunters
Sicherungs and Walkre can both utilise platoons of thenewest ank-Hunters whether it be the 7.5cm PaK40 aufRSO or Hetzer. Tese platoons can provide the mobile
anti-tank support required to bolster the defence againstarmoured attacks. Both are capable of taking out Soviet tankcompanies with their Manoeuvre and Fire or Shoot andScoot attributes.
Flak Nests
Sicherungs and Walkre companies also incorporated theassets of the Luftwaffe that had been defending the towns, cities, and depots throughout occupied Byelorussia. Teir
inherent firepower can greatly increase the defensive abilitiesof the lightly armed Sicherungsand Walkretroops. In par-ticular, the open bunkered FlaK Nest can provide the higherrates of fire needed to defeat light armour and infantry.

Veteran ank-hunter Platoons may prepare alternate firing posi-tions. At the start of the game choose a single piece of ConcealingArea errain or Linear Obstacle that provides concealment.
Te selected terrain feature must be at least partially within yourdeployment area.
As long as the whole platoon remains Concealed within or behindthe selected terrain feature, they may shoot using their full ROFwhen they move as if they had not moved. If the platoon leavesthe selected terrain feature, or is no longer Concealed from enemyteams other than aircraft, they lose the benefit of the Manoeuvre& Fire special rule for theremainder of the game.

Fielding anti-aircraft guns protect your soft rear-area assetsfrom enemy fighter bombers. Providing this point defence isbest accomplished when your guns are in fortified positions.Tis also affords some protection against enemy reconnais-sance and infantry platoons. Te high rate of fire of anti-aircraft guns effectively clears the skies of aircraft or bringsmuch needed support to your dwindling infantry when
fighting advancing enemy formations.
FLAKNEST
PLATOON
3 Flak Nests 135 points
2 Flak Nests 90 points
In a particularly ingenious idea to quickly protect their anti-aircraft assets while still providing direct support for theirinfantry, the Germans would place 2cm quad anti-aircraftguns on the roofs, attics, or the top floors of buildings.
Tis tactic allowed the guns to fire at Soviet aircraft as well asproviding direct firepower against assaulting infantry.
By sand bagging and fortifying the house, the Flak Nestwasprotected against all but heavy calibre high explosives.
Flak Nests follow the rules for Flak Nests on page 49 ofHammer and Sickle.
FLAKNESTSINYOURCOMPANYTe Germans generally built their FlaK Nests in abandoned buildings, filling up the areas below and around the Flak
Nest with rubble to prevent collapse, increase survivability and to limit entry. FlaK Nests are therefore open bunkers andnot buildings and cannot be entered by any team.
You can either model your Flak Nest on the ground or on a single story building. In both cases it has a base size equal toan Artillery base. If it is destroyed it becomes a destroyed bunker and is Impassable terrain.
