All of our children have made leaps and bounds in their learning across the year – not just academically, but also socially and emotionally – and a big group of children were acknowledged for their particular efforts in sport, reading, maths, problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork. In a nutshell: there have been a number of teams competing in the next level for sport, including football, cricket and tennis. We had over 100 children reading 100s of books as part of the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Almost 100 children participated in the Australian Maths Competition, with two gaining high distinctions. Our Tournament Of Minds group were recognized for their participation in the international final, our Solar Boats crew shared their experiences and their boats that they created and sailed, AND our filmmakers celebrated a win at the Atom Awards, and are also finalists at the ACMI Screen It competition. Wow! What a determined and committed group of children! Many, many thanks to the teachers and parents involved in supporting these activities, from listening to children read, transporting and supervising kids at events, and helping to build resilience when things don’t quite turn out the way you might have hoped they would. “Persistence and resilience only come from having been given the chance to work through difficult problems.” Gever Tulley Some keeping safe practices I know that dropping off and picking up children by car means our little streets are very busy around the school. new mobile phone policy comes into effect from Term 1, 2020. We already have this practice at YWPS – students must store their phones in their bags or can have their teacher store them in a locked area during the school day. The school is currently working on our own mobile phone policy that will implement the Government’s announcement in a way that reflects the needs of our own community. We know that access to a mobile phone by children is important to many of our families in providing a sense of safety for their child while travelling to and from school, and for confirming or changing after school arrangements. Additional information regarding the policy is available on the Department of Education and Training website https://www.education.vic.gov.au/parents/going-to-school/Pages/Mobile-phones-in-schools.aspx Warm regards,Karen

Camp NewsThe students are very excited about camp with under a week to go before we depart. Students are busy completing pre-camp activities in their camp booklet. We will be thinking about the skills we would like to develop on camp such as feeling good about ourselves, being a good friend, having a go at activities, overcoming fears…etc. Take time to talk with your child to help them think and decide on the things that they might like to achieve on camp. An information sheet and packing list has been sent home. If you have any questions, please speak to Simone or your classroom teacher.

Congratulations to our Camp Cover Page Competition winners!

Music ProgramExpression of interest in Music Program instrumental tuition for 2020

Needs to be completed this week! Deadline end of this week, Sunday November 17th

Dear parents and students, there will be some changes to the way the music program operates in 2020. To enable the school management to plan for next year we’d like you to complete this form. It will give us an idea of the number of students interested to participate next year. We cannot guarantee a place at this stage.

There will be a second round of registrations as soon as a decision has been taken about what exact structure the program will take next year.

Please note your child will have to be in grade 2 or higher next year in order to participate.

Tuition will be available for keyboard/piano, guitar, ukelele, voice (singing), recorder, clarinet, saxophone and trumpet. At this stage you don’t have to choose an instrument yet.

What is Motor Neuron Disease?Motor neurone disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells - neurones - controlling the muscles that enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow; undergo degeneration and die. This Sunday, 17th of November, Grace from 3/4 Christina and her family are doing the Walk to D'Feet MND fundraiser in honour of Grace's Grandfather Stevo Daskalovski, who sadly lost his brave fight against Motor Neuron Disease in September. A short 5 months after diagnosis.Grace’s Grandfather had a form called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). ALF legend, Neale Daniher and Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking are a couple of famous people who have or had the disease.Below is Grace's fundraising page and she would appreciate any help from her school to reach her goal.
