But until now, Yvonne Kenny and David Hobson have never taken on a duetproject together.

Singing for Love changes all that.

Jointly presented by ABC Classics and Opera Australia, Singing for Love offersboth the first CD and the first national concert tour that the friends and artistshave undertaken together.

This CD features three duets recorded especially for the project, together withhighlights from Yvonne and David’s stellar solo recording careers.

YVONNE KENNYYvonne Kenny is one of the most distinguished sopranos of her generation. She was born in Sydneyand after achieving a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry, went to London to study voice. Shemade her operatic debut in 1975, after which she joined the Royal Opera House, Covent Gardenwhere she remained a member of the company until 1996. Other international appearances includethe Vienna State Opera, La Scala in Milan, Salzburg Festival, Berlin State Opera, Opéra de Paris,English National Opera, Zurich Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the Bavarian State Opera inMunich. Both internationally and in Australia she has built an enviable reputation as a dazzlinginterpreter of works by Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart, Donizetti, Britten and more recently for herinterpretations of the Richard Strauss heroines.

She appears regularly on the concert platform including the Edinburgh and Aix-en-Provence Festivals,BBC Promenade concerts, New York’s Carnegie Hall, and London’s Wigmore, Festival and Royal Albert Halls. Australian performances have included concerts with the Australian BrandenbergOrchestra, national tours for Musica Viva and the Australian Chamber Orchestra as well as guestappearances with all the symphony orchestras and with Opera Australia in a broad range of repertoire.She received a Green Room Award for her interpretation of the role of Cleopatra in Julius Caesar, for Opera Australia.

Recent engagements have included The Countess (Capriccio) for Dresden State Opera, TheMarschallin (Der Rosenkavalier) for Vienna State Opera and Opera Australia, The Merry Widow, La Voix humaine, Dido (Dido and Aeneas) and Blanche (A Streetcar Named Desire) for Opera Australia,Jocasta (Oedipus Rex) for the Sydney Festival, and a special guest appearance in Opera Australia’s Die Fledermaus.

She has a discography of over 60 international titles including her Gold disc Simple Gifts on the ABC Classics label.

Yvonne Kenny was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1989 for services to music, and anHonorary Doctorate in Music was conferred on her by the University of Sydney in 1999. She is aProfessor of Voice at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

DAVID HOBSONDavid Hobson is one of Australia’s best-known operatic performers. He became popular world-wide forhis award-winning portrayal of Rodolfo in Baz Luhrmann’s production of La bohème for Opera Australia.He made his international debut in 1994 with San Francisco Opera in the world premiere of DangerousLiaisons under Donald Runnicles, partnering Renée Fleming, Thomas Hampson and Frederica vonStade. As well as appearing in leading roles with major opera companies, concert organisations,festivals and in recital, he is an impressively versatile artist who has worked in the areas of rock, jazz and television.

David Hobson’s performances have been distinguished by numerous awards including a MO Award forOperatic Performer of the Year, Sydney Critics’ Circle Awards for his performances as Rodolfo, Piquillo(La Péricole) and Orphée (Orphée et Eurydice), The Age Performing Arts Award for Best Performer in an Opera, and an Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Award, and he has performed in thepresence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in Canberra’s Great Hall. His one-man show David Hobsonin Concert premiered at the Sydney Opera House in November 2008. Recent performances have included Nemorino (The Elixir of Love) for Victorian Opera, a new solo show Am I Really Here? at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, and the title role in Candide for Opera in the Domain as part of the2010 Festival of Sydney.

His discography on the ABC Classics label includes the solo albums French and Italian Arias, HandelArias, Cinema Paradiso, David Hobson Live, Presenting David Hobson and The Exquisite Hour, InsideThis Room (with David Hirshfelder), and the pop albums The Promise and A Little Closer; he has alsoreleased a duet album with Teddy Tahu Rhodes, You’ll Never Walk Alone. His album Tenor and Baritonewith Anthony Warlow was released by Skylark Records.

Video/DVD releases include the Opera Australia productions of La bohème, Cosí fan tutte, HMSPinafore / Trial by Jury and The Pirates of Penzance (ABC) and Orphée et Eurydice (Opus Arte). DavidHobson was the critically acclaimed co-winner of Channel 7’s hit series It Takes Two in 2006 and 2008.He was appointed Musica Viva in Schools Ambassador in 2009.

David Hobson is also an award-winning composer, with several notable film scores to his credit,including One Perfect Day, Elizabeth and Better Than Sex.
