Our Third Annual Restaurant Week is back! Nairobi’s biggest culinary event is set to hit the city from January 28th - February 7th with over 60 of the best restaurants participating! Each will offer a 3 course prix fixe menu for dinner, with a few also including a lunch option. You’ll be set back a mere ksh 1,500 or ksh 2,500 at these establishments, just in time for pay day!
This essentially means you have absolutely no reason to say “Oh, I can’t afford that place” or “Let’s just stick to the usual babe”, because every...single...venue...costs the SAME. Chefs around Nairobi have spent the last few months creating menus especially for the occasion, each geared with the desire to impress and showcase their culinary mastery. So if you love experimenting with food and venturing out, avoid disappointment by making
your reservations early via www.eatout.co.ke or calling the restaurant directly beforehand. This month our team has put together all the information you’ll need, complete with a full list of all participating restaurants and their selected price points. This issue will therefore become your ultimate NRW2016 guide so be sure to flip over to page 32 and start circling the restaurants you’d like to visit.
To celebrate NRW2016 our partners will be spoiling you rotten with a few cheeky giveaways. Be spotted by our mystery diners with a bottle of Nederburg wine at participating restaurants to stand the chance of winning a trip to Cape Town, courtesy of our title sponsor Nederburg. From January 25th, be sure to tune into East FM and XFM where we will be giving away hundreds of dinner-for-two
I’m just going to take a wild guess that, by now, you’ve got a mild case of the post Christmas blues...You’re probably battling with your New Year’s resolution, having taken or given up all manner of things, been cooped up in your house due to overspending and have returned to the office to find a scary backlog of emails that you just can’t seem to get to the bottom of. If that’s the case, I believe we have just what you need!

Dear Yummy,Just wanted to thank you for letting me hang out in the kitchen with Sauti Sol in December (2014), for the discounted lunches in January with Nairobi Restaurant Week and the Chinese New Year in March. April was no exception and I had fun making Easter treats, and in May, my kids agreed I was indeed Yummy Mummy after I made sweet bitings. Did I mention that I am Kenyan? This you made me more proud of in June, July and August. Then came September with the Taste Awards and I was excited to see my favourite restaurants win. My birthday month October was my favourite as I attended the Pizza Fest and come November, I learnt to spice up my meals with a Taste of India. December is here and we are closing the year with cocktails from the kings themselves. I cannot say thank you enough and really looking forward to what you will present in 2016.
Regards,Phiona.

When I was a child I thought Tong Yuen or small round balls of glutinous rice flour in savoury broths
with rich and smoky Lap Yuk (Chinese cured bacon), delicate small portions of Dim Sum, long strands of Sapporo Miso Ramen with Garlic Oil, and my neighbour’s Italian Meatballs were just delicious. I never thought they could be both delicious and trendy. Tong Yuen, traditionally homemade and eaten in celebration of the beginning of the Winter Solstice, was to me something deeply rooted in tradition and definitely not as cool as eating pizza. Now, they’re often found occupying the freezer next to your grocery store’s diverse selection of frozen Dim Sum. Culinary and restaurant trends aren’t new news to us, and understanding them depends on the prediction of mood, behaviour and eating habits of the diner at a particular time. True trends evolve over time, so what does this mean for a city such as Nairobi where the flourishing gastronomic scene is still very young? As Nairobi becomes more cosmopoli-tan, so will lifestyle-based choices that extend into other areas of our everyday life. Dining offerings will reflect the growing interconnectedness of the global space and trends in foodservice usually led by professionals in more developed markets will echo those in emerging ones. petition between restaurants in Nairobi, it’s not surprising to see an increase in demand for variety.2016 promises to continue some old trends, such as locally-sourced ingre-dients, whilst bringing in some fresh concepts shaped by the city’s growing cosmopolitan population. The culinary forecast in Nairobi calls for sunny with a chance of delicious eating! Here are five restaurant trends to look out for in Nairobi:
ASIAN INVASIONEthnic cuisine continues its inroads into mainstream and Nairobi menus. As Ken-yan palates become more adventurous, so do restaurant offerings. Already there are a fair amount of Chinese restau-rants here, but that’s about to increase especially with authentic and regional offerings. People want to experience the true depth of flavours so don’t be surprised when you see less signs read-ing “XXX Chinese Restaurant” and more like “Shanghai Dumpling House.” The opening of Ohcha Noodle Bar in Westgate will certainly lead the way in an imminent ramen and noodle explosion as Malaysian and Vietnam-ese favourites continue to pop-up in restaurants such as The Arbor. Person-ally, I’m looking forward to the opening of the French-Vietnamese restaurant in Upperhill this year. This would be the first time Nairobi has enjoyed the fresh flavours of authentic Vietnamese cui-sine and the intricate preparation and
precise presentation of the French since Chef Philippe Bischoff and Chef Mai Phuong Nguyen visited the Fairmont Norfolk in 2011!
OUTDOOR SPACESFrom lush gardens and large patios to rooftops, Nairobi restaurants are offering spaces for people to lounge and linger. No longer are lush and airy surroundings limited to restaurants in old spacious private homes or hotels: River Café enjoys its forest surround-ings, Brew Bistro in Westlands is pulling in the crowds with its rooftop beer garden, KIZA opens its vast rooftop, and even fastfood chains like Pizza Hut are embracing casual outdoor spaces.
CHEF-DRIVEN CONCEPTSWhether it’s fast-casual or fine-dining concepts, 2016 is going to see more interaction between chefs and diners. For a very long time, executive chefs have only been defined and respected solely by their function; but those per-ceptions are changing thanks to their rising celebrity statuses and television appearances, new trendy cooking styles and ingredients, and showcasing unparalleled creativity in plating. Chef’s Tables have already been popping-up in Nairobi, the latest being at Sarova Stanley and Wet Lounge, and dining at a chef’s table is culinary exclusivity defined.
ETHNIC CONDIMENTS AND SPICESMiso and Wasabi, traditional Japa-nese condiments and seasoning, will continue to make more appearances on menus across Nairobi. From marinades to even mash potatoes, expect to see more Japanese influence in different cuisines. One of my favourite spice mix-tures and a must-gift from friends who pass through Ethiopia, Berbere, will be a great spicy addition to any barbequed meat. Korean red pepper powder, also known as Gochugaru, which has smoky, fruity-sweet notes and quite a kick will have more of a mainstream presence this year in restaurants aside from the Japanese and Korean spots.
LOCAL AND ARTISANAL SOURCINGLocally grown produce has been widely featured in restaurant menus in 2015, but this year diners can expect that to continue to gain in momentum. Wheth-er its cuts of protein, legumes or cheese – people are serving proudly Kenyan. However, adding to their meteoric rise, menus will see more artisanal interpre-tations such as Mursik Cheese, which is made from sour milk that’s blended with burnt herbs and charcoal powder from Kenya’s Kalenjin community. In addition to what higher-end hotels and some restaurants such as Seven Grill & Lounge and Talisman have already done, more and more restaurants will begin to incorporate their own artisanal butcheries, offering different cuts of meat and experimenting with curing.

BAOBABTALESKaty Fentress looks beyond the superfruit trend and discovers that baobab pulp is as good for you as they say it is.
The mythology invariably features an exasperated or petty god, a disgust-ed animal or a vain tree. Something happens that reflects badly on the tree which results in it being planted upside down. The story then ends as an ode to the many health giving qualities of said tree, presumably to make up for the fact that it is forced to live a life looking ungainly and upside down. There are so many African stories sur-rounding the birth of the baobab. From Senegal through Mali, Southern Africa, and up and down the Horn, baobab origin legends are creative, mystical and always told with a certain amount of awe. And quite rightly so: whoever has stepped over the massive roots of a baobab, in the shade of its huge gnarly trunk, cannot fail to be struck by how majestic and solemn it looks. Although there appears to be little literature on the matter, it would seem that ancient Swahili settlements were often built around baobabs. Testament to this can be found up and down the coast: from Manda Toto island in Lamu, to the Gede and Jumba la Mtwana ruins in Kilifi county, each of these villages contain a massive baobab that witnessed their

rise, fall and subsequent crumble. It is said that baobabs can live up to 2,000 years, grow to over 20 metres in height and 18 metres in diameter. Baobabs today are rising to promi-nence not only across the continent but worldwide. Instead of a divine mythol-ogy though, they are now imbued with the beneficial antioxidant attributes commonly ascribed to the different varieties of super fruits that are popular today amongst people keen to maintain a healthy diet. An extensive study made by Oxford Brookes university demonstrated that Baobab fruit is a vitamin and mineral powerhouse. Gram for gram, the chalky white pulp has up to five times the vitamin C content of an orange and concentrated amounts of calcium, mag-nesium and iron. It has taken a while for Kenya to catch up with the baobab fruit game. Half a decade ago you would be pushed to find it for sale anywhere. Sure, you could get sugary mabuyu sweets on every street corner but nothing with that much sugar and food colouring can be considered healthy. Today this is no longer the case: different brands are

popping up in health shops and even on our supermarket shelves. Producers too are beginning to catch on and up and down the coast, from September to November, people have begun to harvest this natural bounty in earnest. Founded in Kilifi in 2006 by one Rob Barnett and Anthony Maina, Wild Living is a company dedicated providing land use models to create tangible livelihoods for local communities. The company specialises in making eco briquettes, oil extraction, herbal medi-cines, sustainable hard wood supplies and baobab processing. “We run a small scale harvesting oper-ation” says Hassan Charoa Nyundo, the company’s marketing assistant. “Most of our baobabs are picked on one planta-tion by a couple of guys”. The process, as Nyundo explains, involves the har-vesters breaking the baobab’s velvety pods on the spot and placing the flesh into sacks, from whence they are then transported to the processing facility where they are spread out to dry on polythene sheets. Once dry, the fibrous matter is removed, the seeds separated and the pulp gently pound to a powder in a large pestle and mortar.
One of the great things about bao-bab pulp is that it doesn’t need to be heated during processing. This means that when you use it as a supplement you are getting its full health benefits, without them having been altered in the process. Foodies and nutritionists alike, highly recommend adding it to smoothies and fruit salads to give them an extra boost.“I have always loved sucking on baobab seeds” says Nyundo, adding that he makes sure there is always baobab lem-onade available around the house for his children, “I even add it in my soups!” he smiles. The possibilities for adding baobab to foods seem endless. Basically anything that could benefit from a bit of lemony tartness will work brilliantly with baobab powder. This means it is not only good for you but delicious too! As it looks poised to take over the super fruit market with a vengeance, baobab powder might end up becoming a new important Kenyan export. Let’s just hope they leave some for our domestic consumption.

Enzo Nucci is the Director of the RAI (Italy’s public national broadcaster) Sub Saharan bureau in Nairobi. Born and raised in the southern city of Naples, coffee is an essential cornerstone of his morning rituals.
HOW I TAKE MY COFFEE, WITH ENZO NUCCI
What is your morning routine?
I wake up around 7:00am, put a four person moca on the stove, drink a freshly squeezed orange juice and eat a papaya or mango while I wait for the coffee to be ready. All the while I read the news and watch Al Jazeera. I then drink a caffe latte made up of three shots of coffee followed by a standalone espresso. After that I shower and head to the office, where I immediately have another espresso before getting down to work.
How many coffees do you have a day?
Around six, though if I go out to dinner I will probably have another. Before quitting smoking a few years ago I could drink double that. Favourite pastry?
I’m not really a pastry person. Sometimes when I’m in Italy I will have a cornetto (Italian plain croissant) but otherwise I prefer simply adding a handful or two of muesli to my caffe latte.

1-MINUTE COFFEE CAKE TREAT
Ingredients
• 3 tbsp white flour or rice flour • 1/4 tsp baking powder• 1/16 tsp salt• 1 tbsp white sugar• 1 tbsp plus 2 tsp water• 2 tsp oil or melted margarine• 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract• 1/8 tsp cinnamon• 1 and 1/4 tsp brown sugar• 1/4 to 1/2 tsp oil or melted
margarine • Pinch of salt• 2 walnut or pecan halves
Method
- For the batter, combine dry ingredients and mix well, then add the wet ingredients and continue mixing. In a tiny bowl, combine all streusel ingredients. - Fill a greased muffin tin (or a ramekin or mug if using the microwave) half way with the batter, add on two-thirds of the streusel, spoon the remaining batter on top and finally add the rest of the streusel. - Cook for 12-13 minutes in the oven, or around 1 minute in the microwave. (Microwave times may vary).
How is ordering coffee in Kenya different from in Italy?
I still find it strange when people ask me if I want a single or double espresso. In Italy you only ever ask for a single except in really exceptional cases like you’ve been up all night and need to get to work. If anything I order two singles to be consumed in quick succession!
How do you feel about a cappuccino after lunch or dinner?
I feel it should be made illegal.

CHEF’STABLE
I am by no means a wordsmith. I am a Chef. It is all I have ever known and all I will probably ever need to know. When Yummy asked me to write this column, it was a bit like trying
to draw blood from a stone. I was born in Tahiti and grew up in Asia between India and Thailand. At the age of twenty I moved to Denmark, where I am originally from, and enrolled in culinary school, already completely aware that this was going to be my chosen path.
In 2004 I opened my own Italian restaurant in Copenhagen, which I then sold in 2009 when I moved to Kenya. My family runs Peponi Hotel in Lamu and after some subtle persuasion, they convinced me to come out and take over their kitchen by the ocean. This was an incredible learning experience as I got to experiment with some of the freshest seafood the Indian Ocean has to offer. After 2012, the Kenyan coast saw a bit of a tourist slump and so I took on the position of Executive Chef at Windsor Hotel & Country Club for 3 years before stepping into some very big boots here at The Talisman.
Deciding to be part of NRW was a no brainer. As someone who has worked in various restaurants and therefore understands the dining culture both in Kenya and abroad, I am drawn by the fact that this concept is not about monthly targets and profit margins. It is really more personal to me as a Chef. NRW is about opening our doors to the ever-growing number of curious foodies in this city and letting them experience a little taste of our restaurants. It is an open invite for all, introducing the

notion that eating out doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. On the other hand, it is also an incredible opportunity for young chefs who are just getting started in the industry to learn. I am encouraging every Sous and Commis to go and experience what Nairobi has to offer, get new ideas and fresh inspiration for us to be able to innovate and grow.
Having lived in Thailand for instance, I find that there is such a different culture when it comes to eating out. From street food kiosks to street side restaurants (which are literally everywhere), it is so easy to catch a bite as you go about your daily business. Eating out is more commonplace than eating at home and it is all fresh and delicious. Nairobi is slowly getting to the point of celebrating the eating out culture, and NRW is steering things in that direction. Dear food lovers, be sure to explore the menus at the various participating restaurants- I’m sure you will discover a few favourites!
The NRW menu at Talisman showcases some of Chef Ray’s culinary experiences honed throughout his travels, with dishes that hail from his Asian upbringing (Crispy Chinese Pork Ribs, Bangkok -Style Fried Snapper) to some simple Italian dishes (you must try the Mushroom Carpaccio), all mixed with a little Scandinavian technique (House Cured Salmon). His dish of the moment is however the Seared Beef Tagliata which has been flying out of the kitchen. Be sure to try these out for yourself!

One of the highlights of Dubai is The Burj Khalifa. Standing at 828 metres with 163 floors, this mega skyscraper proudly boasts the title of the world’s tallest building. If you go up to the outdoor
observation deck at the 148th floor, it is like are standing on the wing of an airplane. If you dare, you can even BASE jump to the ground. Otherwise, you can just settle for a meal at At.mosphere restaurant. When you call to make your reservation, you get a sense of how expensive it will be as even credit card details are required. When you get to the building, you have to go up and down a number of escalators, stairs and lifts: you are heading to the highest restaurant in the world. There’s a minimum spend limit for you to reserve a window seat, and the view is spectacular. Tuck into the house special- a juicy steak cooked in the Josper grill- and take it all in. This steakhouse has great quality cuts of meat and seafood, as well as an extensive premium drinks list. NRW2016 is giving two lucky diners the chance to fly Emirates to Dubai to visit Atlantis The Palm, a majestic 5 star hotel frequented by celebrities such as the Beckhams. It is based on the concept of the mythical lost underwater city, and with a giant aquarium that hosts over 65,000 fish, it is as much a theme park as it is a hotel. Based here is Nobu Restaurant found-ed by globally renowned chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Hollywood actor Robert De Niro. Spanning across 5 continents, this particular spot fuses cutting-edge

Atlantis also hosts celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay’s (best known for Hell’s Kitchen and Masterchef) recently opened Bread Street Kitch-en. The elegant indoor area features black and white chequered floors and hints of the early 20th-century in the decor. This is complimented by a bougainvillea-lined lawn, stations serving light British mixed drinks and a live barbecue station serving sizzling, juicy cuts of beef on large, pillowy Yorkshire puddings. From the appetiser section of the buffet, the ricotta pancakes with cinnamon sugar and cara-melised bananas is a must try. Designed to resemble a billowing sail, Burj al Arab is the only 7-star hotel in the world. It’s lavish Royal Suite is one of the most expensive rooms in the world with an average cost of about Ksh 2.4million a night. You unfortunately cannot just waltz in to check out the premises without a reservation at the bars or restaurants, and this is perhaps why it is Insta-grammed so much from the beach next to it. One of its restaurants, Al Iwan showcases simple Arabic dishes with bold Moroccan influences. If you’re looking for a spot with a better view of the city, head up to Al Muntaha at the top floor, or swing by the glitzy Skyview Bar for a cocktail. The seafood restaurant Al Mahara is on the other hand testament of the vivid imagination behind the creation of the hotel. Contrary to popular belief, it is neither underwater nor do you
need to access it via submarine. It however has an un-derwater feel because of the floor to ceiling aquarium which surrounds and subtly lights it up.While Dubai has no Michelin Guide yet, resturants have a penchant for having Michelin-starred chefs at the helm of their kitchens. One such spot is Grosvenor House Hotel’s Rhodes Mezzanine headed by Gary Rhodes. The chef is known for whipping up fantastic fusions of English and French cuisine, with an innova-tive menu that uses fresh ingredients imported from Europe and complemented by an extensive collection of new, old and vintage wines. On the other hand, set on a bedecked pier jutting out into the Arabian Gulf, Pierchic whose cuisine is European offers some of Dubai’s finest seafood. The pier is a romantic spot tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Dubai, and offers an unmarred view of the Gulf. With a variety of fantastic restaurants to check out in the city, getting a weekend reservation at Sho-Cho at Dubai Marine Beach Resort can be quite the culinary challenge. It offers excellent, reasonably priced Jap-anese food that includes sushi, teriyaki and tempura. The ambiance is elevated by fish tanks which are built into the walls. It is quite popular with the young and hip crowd who start streaming in for sake from about 10:00pm (It is only open from 7:00pm to 2:30am). These and many more make Dubai quite the perfect culinary destination for foodies worldwide.

LOVE & HATE
I’ve signed up for an Ayurvedic retreat in India with my dad. By the time you read this my body will be mainly composed of Ayurvedic water and doing yoga contortions
in its sleep. To be honest, I think it’s an excellent idea as I can’t think of a better way to spend time with my dad—who I don’t see nearly enough, get fit and untangle myself from the stresses of daily life. It’s the kind of thing I personally won’t be able to afford until I’m rich and famous, but my Grandmother died recently leaving my dad a bit of spare cash, so I can’t think of a better way to spend the money she worked so hard to make!
It’s never easy being a spectator to one’s parents interminable fights. I’m lucky because after 45 years, they are still together, but it saddens me that communication is so bad that sometimes they seem to lack any form of empathy towards one another. My mother was born with great genes:
It can be difficult to find a balance between loving and accepting ourselves for who
we are and making the right choices in life, finds Charity Keita as she decides to go on
her first ever health retreat in India.
she has long legs, a swift metabolism, loves sport and sees food as a form of sustenance. My dad and I on the other hand are quite the opposite: we have short appendages, like sport but not to excess, have a tendency to gain weight simply by looking at food and a consummate passion for cooking for the people we love. I love my parents and believe they complement each other magnificently; however their differing approaches to the art of nourishment has been a bone of contention for the better part of two decades and it seems to be getting worse not better.
Modern life offers us all the choice in the world: gone are the days in which we lived off one kind of starch, two kinds of vegetables and a meaty feast served only on special occasions. Today we can can gorge ourselves on different delicious meals three times a day every day of the year. But abundance has gone hand in hand with the rise of obesity and diseases which are
closely linked to these excesses. The easy availability of unhealthy choices is coupled with a saturation of images of toned and healthy people who serve to constantly remind us of our failings in the food and exercise department. It can be hard, when bombarded by such conflicting messages, to find it in ourselves to love ourselves for who we are.
I look at my dad being depressed about his weight and it saddens me because I see this form of self loathing reflected in myself. I want to reach out to him and tell him it’s ok, it’s just his body’s natural course. But of course I understand where my mother is coming from when she chastises him for helping himself to seconds or that fifth glass of wine. I just wish she wouldn’t be so judgemental in her approach.
The general feeling is that we indulgent ones have a moral failing when compared to the ones who abstain. But surely there should be
a way to separate the superiority/inferiority element from the process? While she is undoubtedly right about the second helping, I feel the chastisement feeds into the cycle of self hate. It is my strong conviction that the more we hate ourselves, the harder it is to make the positive decisions that will lead us to shed the extra pounds (because we aren’t arguing they don’t need to be shed) and so the cycle continues. No one is arguing that obesity is good, but do chubby people really have to spend their lives hating on themselves?
There must be a balance somewhere... love yourself first and then find it in yourself to say no to that extra piece of pie and whipped cream! Moral of the story? Daddy and I are off to India to find ourselves. I can’t believe I just said that….

PEA AND QUINOA SALADSERVES: 6
This delicious salad is hearty enough to fill you up at lunch or dinnertime. It is gluten-free,vegan and low in fat—all
while being packed with protein and lots of flavor.
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups cooked peas
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 garlic cloves, peeled
1 cup dry quinoa
2 cups water
1 teaspoon salt
4-6 zucchini
2 cucumbers, thinly sliced lengthwise.
4 spring onions, roughly chopped
½ cup cilantro dressing, plus more to taste
METHOD:
Marinate the peas: Combine the peas, lemon juice, oil and garlic in a large bowl. Let the chickpeas marinate for at least
1 hour (or up to overnight).
Cook the quinoa: Rinse the quinoa well. Bring 2 cups of salted water to a boil. Add the quinoa and cook for about 15
minutes, until all the water is absorbed. Take off the heat and let it cool.
Roast the zucchini: Preheat your oven to 180C (350F). Cut the zucchini into quarters lengthwise. Brush them with a

LENTIL “MEATBALLS”SERVES: 4-6
These are a great vegetarian alternative to meatballs and are so tasty that even the most dedicated carnivore may not
realize that they don’t actually contain meat.
INGREDIENTS
2 cups lentils
2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more to grease the pan
1 large onion
2 carrots
2 celery stalks
1 garlic clove
1 tablespoon dry thyme
2 teaspoons salt
3 tablespoons tomato paste
250 grams mushrooms
3 eggs
½ cup grated parmesan or gouda
½ cup bread crumbs
½ cup fresh parsley,minced
METHOD
Cook the lentils: Combine the lentils and 2 litres water in a medium pot and boil for about 25 minutes. Drain and allow
to cool.
Prepare the vegetables: While the lentils are cooking, mince the onions, celery, garlic and thyme. Grate the carrots. Heat
the olive oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add salt and sauté these vegetables for about 10 minutes, until
soft and beginning to brown. Add the tomato paste and cook for three more minutes. Add mushrooms and cook for 5-7
more minutes, stirring occasionally.Take the pan off the heat and let the vegetables cool for about 5 minutes.
Mix: Add the lentils, eggs, cheese, bread crumbs and parsley to the cooled vegetables and stir to combine. Preheat the
oven to 200C (395F) then lightly grease a large baking tray.
Bake: Use your hands to roll the mixture into meatball-sized rounds. Place them on the baking dish. Roast for about 20
minutes, turning them every five minutes so they brown evenly on all sides
Serve: These meatballs can be served over spaghetti with tomato sauce or pesto, can make a light meal with a salad
and grilled bread, or serve over a bed of rice and lentils.

RECIPES
HONEY & LEMON CUPCAKES (WITH RHUBARB COMPOTE)
YIELD: 12 CUPCAKES
These delicious cupcakes contain no refined sugar—just the natural goodness of honey. Plus, instead of a heavy
frosting, they can be completed with puréed rhubarb for a gently tangy touch.
INGREDIENTS
2 eggs
1/2 cup (125 grams) yogurt
1/3 cup (75 ml) oil
1 cup (170 ml) honey
1 tablespoon grated lemon zest
1 tablespoon (15 ml) fresh lemon juice
1 ¼ cups (160 grams) flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
½ teaspoon salt
METHOD
Pre-heat your oven to 180C (350F).
Mix the wet ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk the eggs. Add the yogurt, oil, honey, lemon zest and lemon juice and stir until they
are combined.
Mix the dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg and salt. Pour the dry
ingredients into the wet ingredients and stir just until they are combined.
Bake: Put cupcake liners into 12 muffin tins. Carefully spoon batter into each cupcake liner. Cook for 12-15 minutes, until a
toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
Cool: Let the cupcakes cool for at least 15 minutes. You can then top each one with a spoonful of rhubarb compote. Enjoy!
RHUBARB COMPOTEINGREDIENTS
4 cups fresh rhubarb (about 1 kilogram)
1 cup sugar (or honey), plus more to taste
1 tablespoon lemon juice
¼ cup water
METHOD
Chop the rhubarb stalks into small chunks, removing any dirty or limp sections as you go. Put the rhubarb, sugar, lemon juice and
water into a medium saucepan.
Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally until the rhubarb is very soft and begins to fall apart. Transfer the compote to a blender
and blend until very smooth.
Use this compote to top your cupcakes. Enjoy!

January is a trying time for personal self-esteem. It’s the universe’s way of re-establishing balance (or doling out punish-ment) after the extended period
of over-indulgence otherwise known as The Christmas Holidays. In January, the only way to spin the direness of this sit-uation is by boasting about how broke and fat you now are is directly correlat-ed with how epic your Christmas break was. Even the few skinny, rich people left pretend to be fat and broke, just to fit in.
In the harsh light of January, the boom time of December is but a distant memory. This month, you will be forced to withdraw the little you have left in your checking account and exchange it for a gym membership. You will join the sad desperation of crowds at the jogging trail, jostling like everyone else for that limited brisk-walking space in your brand new running shoes (bought on your credit card). Or you could just wait it out and be fat until February 1st, when those very trails will be empty again.
In January, the contents of your grocery cart look as lean as you wish your body would be. Where there were once tubs of imported ice-cream, good cheese and the full range of KWV bottles, there is now a packet of rice, beans and one lone Culemborg, Chenin Blanc (Ksh 690), which might have to last you the entire week. For a fleeting moment you even consider buying a second bottle and forgoing a couple of gourmet rice-and-beans meals (which would help the diet along anyway). And in the unfortunate chance that some-
If you are a mere mortal like Annabel Onyango, you’re subject to the biggest clichés of the New Year: a)You will be fat b)You will be broke. But for wine enthusiasts, how can you still enjoy a glass on a post-Christmas budget?
BROKE, NOT BROKEN
one invites you to a post-holiday dinner party, you’ll have to pick up that cheer-ful Prosecco aka Poor Man’s Champagne (Ksh 1,200 ).
For wine die-hards like me for whom wine is more a daily ritual than a week-end indulgence, January is the home of the wholesale purchase. The Wine Shop offers cases of 6 bottles (from France, Chile, Australia, California) for Ksh 5,000, or 12 bottles for Ksh 10,000. And you can mix that case up with whites, reds, and rosés - the perfect accompani-ment to tonight’s rice and beans.

JANUARY BLUES
As you are reading this, I hope I survived December with its excesses. I am probably tired and sunburnt. My forehead is likely peeling
off and I’m most definitely darker in complexion yet my teeth, somehow, are whiter. December wears one out both physically and financially. I’m probably writing this half comatose, my eyes rolled over, feeling my liver pulse. I’m probably feeling lethargic and tragic. December, in short, is evil.
January is the time to step back and take stock of our bodies. It’s the time we realise that we are human, and that we wear and tear. There are resolutions
Jackson Biko, is a lover of whisky and people watching. He likes to walk the
shadows of the city at dusk, picking conversations of a people spurred by the
night and by their drink.
to ignore, yes, but mostly we need to get back on track; shed off some excess weight, hydrate our system and bring some colour back to our jaded eyes. We aren’t growing younger, are we?
I have added weight. That’s what my belt tells me. I am using a different hole now. I feel bloated from all the whisky and food bingeing that went on in December. Someone mentioned that a juice fast would help, which is this dreadful punishment where you “cleanse” your system with nothing but fresh vegetable juice. It tastes like dung, but I was told that it’s what my body needs to recover. I honestly thought the body had its own recovery
mechanism that is never asleep. That all the booze we put in is processed by an efficient system that, well, never sleeps. Apparently our bodies are lazy and need a juice-fast. Anyway, I’m here paying for my sins. It’s a painful journey because when you get a man who’s 87kgs, loves his chapatis and whisky, and you tell him not to eat anything but salads and vegetable smoothies, you are basically killing him.
Which means I am angsty and impatient and moody and I walk around kicking everything in my way and banging doors and snapping at PR people and feeling like my world is swimming in a churning sea of green
slime. But I’m feeling the results. In my head I imagine the whiskies being wrung from my body. I’m feeling like my old life of December is being expunged and replaced by a new life of January. But I’m still miserable as it is. I miss chapatis. I wake up dreaming of a double Chivas with one rock. I can’t watch someone eat a wrap. Or egg rice. I avoid people who eat rich food and secretly envy them, wishing I didn’t care about cleansing.
I can’t wait for February. I can’t wait to sit in a bar again and have one double. Just one. Just to remind my body that life is for the living.
