Yuma Elementary School District One

DISTRICT PROFILE

The Yuma Elementary School District is the largest elementary school district located in Yuma, Arizona, with a student population of over 8,000 and an employee base of over 1,300. The District operates twelve elementary schools, three junior high schools, two middle schools and an online school.

NOTABLE DISTRICT PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: The District is proud to offer a number of student-centered support programs.

Personalized Learning: Our personalized learning initiative empowers every student and educator to utilize digital tools for high achievement and innovative excellence. Every student in kindergarten through eighth grade has access to an iPad. Students have continued, rigorous, high quality, teacher-led whole group instruction, increased small group and individual instruction based on the learning needs of each student, engaging online academic content, and collaborative group projects to deepen their understanding of learning.

Exceptional Student Services: We have an outstanding exceptional student program that offer services across the continuum from full inclusion in the general education classroom, to off-campus alternative setting, to homebound or residential placement. Our program offers a variety of classroom placements ranging from resource, mild/moderate, extensive, and intensive support. In addition to the classroom personnel, the district also employs specialists that include school psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists.

Military Family Programs: Our District has several grants including the Department of Defense grant that supports our military family programs and military advocates. The grants also support the enrichment courses that support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

AVID: The Advancement Via Individual Determination program is a system that challenges all students to become confident scholars, fully prepared for successful completion of a four-year college program. All of our middle schools offer and promote the AVID program. Woodard Junior High School was recently recognized in the top two percent of AVID schools worldwide and was designated as an AVID Demonstration School.

Migrant: Our migrant program identifies students who have moved during the last three years due to their parent’s agricultural work. Our district employs migrant advocates that provide support through on-going communication with students, teachers, and parents regarding attendance and academic progress.

Gifted: Our district also provides gifted services through the individualized gifted education plan, gifted cluster classrooms in elementary schools, and advanced classes at middle schools. The mission is to promote the optimum development of gifted students.

Health Services: The health services program is comprised of five professional registered nurses and twelve health assistants that provide services to district students. The specific mission is to enhance the education of District students by removing health related barriers to learning by promoting an optimal level of wellness.

Child Nutrition: The district is proud of the fantastic child nutrition department. Each school ensures that nutrition education is embedded in the school day. Whether it is promoting the veggie of the day in the cafeteria or explaining the importance of healthy choices in the classrooms, our child nutrition staff is top notch.

Art/Music/Physical Education: Every school at Yuma District One offers art, music, and physical education. Both the District administration and Governing Board have made a commitment to ensure that these programs are offered.

These are just several of many quality programs that support students in the District.

District One is proud of its exemplary employees. Each month we highlight five of our High Five employees (Fantastic, Incredible, Valuable, Employees). Our outstanding staff have been acknowledged and highlighted through various awards and celebrations in the county and state. We are home to multiple Yuma county teacher of the year winners. In addition, several of our employees have been selected as Rodel Exemplary Teachers and Principals. The District has the support of the community. In 2014, the community approved a $37 million bond program. Bond funds are being used to address facility maintenance improvements such as roof repairs, student restroom renovation, classroom lighting, along with security and safety improvements, energy efficiency projects, and technology upgrades.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

Yuma is located on the southwestern tip of Arizona bordering California and the Republic of Mexico. A rich cultural heritage of Hispanic, Anglo, and Native American influences, coupled with a large number of military families, and a migrant population, has enriched the district with a diverse student population.

Today, Yuma ranks as one of Arizona’s most important cities. The following are the major contributors to our economy:

Agriculture: With the presence of the Colorado River and the climate that is conducive to a year-round growing season, agriculture has become a major contributor to the economic stability and growth of the city and surrounding metropolitan area.

Military: Also, supporting the economy of the region is a strong

presence of support and service industries such as the Yuma Proving Ground and the Marine Corps Air Station.

Tourism: Each year, Yuma greets many visitors from different

places. Whether they are just passing through or enjoying the warmer winters, Yuma has something to offer everyone.
