COURT SHOW2015 Fall Will published in 2015-2016 GSAPP Abstract

The courthouse is a government institution presenting reality shows that has significant influence on people’s daily life. The concept is to transform the courtrooms to performance spaces in order to create a non-hierarchy and democratic justice system that merged the govern-ment affairs and public life together. The new spatial organization is a grid filled with public spaces and court rooms alternately. Diverse activities can take place be-tween the court above and the ground below. By expos-ing the trial to the public, the court system can be more transparent, and also people are able to participate bet-ter in political affairs.

KNOWLEDGE BANK2014 SpringPublished in 2013-2014 GSAPP Abstract

The site is a crucial conjunction of different neighbor-hoods of Brooklyn. Although the difference contributes to a certain diversity, it also creates conflicts and reduc-es harmony. In the information age, books are regarded as redundant materials for many people, therefore they should be recycled to have a new function and redistrib-uted to be accessed by the people who really need them. The Knowledge Bank is actually a public bookshelf where people can save their own private books and also borrow books from others. In this way, the books can be cycled in different neighborhoods to encourage the experience of communicating and sharing.

IN-BETWEEN LIVING2014 FallPublished in 2014-2015 GSAPP Abstract

When people think about “living space” today, the strong sense of boundary and isolation can be evoked in various scales of the living environment. The “In-be-tween Living” intends to reunite the lost “living space” at different scales of the living environment – the unit, the building, and the community. It creates a type of living space that can mitigate the sudden shift people experi-ence in daily lives as they step out the threshold of each living scale, replacing it with a constant interconnection across different scales of social interactions, thus provid-ing new possibilities for the way we live and grow as our individual selves and as a social community.

The in-between state of flexibility extends outside of the single unit into the expanded unit of a floor level.

LIFESCAPE2015 Spring

Jaimaca Bay is a fragile land where diverse habitats support native species. However, the pollution and con-struction has threatened crucial habitats. To solve the problems, the program has both social and ecological response. Theproject aims to create a performative and connective landscape allowing for symbiotic activities to take place and also stimulating the ecosystem to get resilient. The pond on land is a passive and long-term resilient strategy. The floating island is an active and short-term strategy to adapt the system for immediate change and need. The former provides social and eco-logical resources; the latter distributes the resources and can have dynamic responses to different situations.
