1. Introduction

===========================================================================

Welcome to my Yu-Gi-Oh GX: Duel Academy (or YGO GX: DA for short) guide.

Here I will cover the basics to the game, the duelists, the exams, timed

Page 3: Yu-Gi-Oh GX Duel Academy - Walkthrough

duel puzzles. If you wish to make a suggestion, rant or insult me, do so

at [email protected]

===========================================================================

2. Basics and controls

===========================================================================

This game is yet another addition to the YGO series on the GBA. The game

plays like the others and uses the characters from the new YGO anime: YGO

GX. You play the role of a new student who becomes friends with the Slifer

Red students: Jaden, Syrus and Chumley and you work your way up the ladder

by winning duels and doing well in the exams. The school system in the game

works like this: there are 3 dorm rooms representing the 3 egyptian god

cards... Slifer Red, Ra Yellow, Obelisk blue. Slifer is the lowest, Obelisk

is the highest ranked (actually the highest should've been Ra since it's

the strongest of the god cards but Kaiba from the old anime is the guy who

founded the school so he made the highest rank be that of his egyptian god

card, Obelisk).

Controls...

Control pad: move around selections

A button: Confirm a selection

B button: Cancel a selection

R Button: Change the camera view

Hold R button: View card detail in a duel

L button: Go to the first card in your hand

Start button (outside of duel): Use PDA

Start butoon (in a duel): Start menu (Status, Option, Return to duel)

Select button: View how much time you've spent on a duel so far.

3. Newbie

===========================================================================

This section is for those that are new to the series and the card game

itself.

3a. Intro

YGO is a trading card game (the obvious must be pointed out >_>) that takes

strategy and luck to win. The game is played out by using cards correctly

and accordingly to what they state. The aim of the game is to play until

1 duelist's life points has reached Zero, Nothing, Zip, Nada, Rien. However

there are other ways to win. The 2 other ways to win are:

* Having all 5 pieces of the mighty "Exodia the forbidden one" in your hand

* Playing Destiny Board and successfully playing the other 4 spell cards

that spell out "FINAL" with destiny board.

I wouldn't recommend either method unless you're playing a game WITHOUT use

of the Forbidden/Limited rules. The Exodia pieces and the Destiny Board

letters are all limited to having 1 of each card in your deck.

Next, your dueling deck. Your dueling deck must consist of at least 40 cards

and no more than 60. At the same time, you must follow the Forbidden/limited

rules so you won't have an "Uber and unfair deck".

The cards are divided into categories, attributes and types.

3b. Categories

Page 5: Yu-Gi-Oh GX Duel Academy - Walkthrough

Categories: Just 3, these are Monsters, Spell and Traps.

Monsters are creatures varying in different types and attributes that can

affect gameplay. You are the king and these creatures are your knights that

follow your orders of attacking the opposing castle which in this case would

be your opponent. The stars on the cards represent the monster level. If a

monster is level 4 or lower, it can summoned or set (put in face down

defense position) without tribute a monster. 5-6 requres 1 tribute and

the higher ones require 2 monsters. Monsters have attack and defense points.

Attack determines just how well the monster can do attacking and destroying

opposing monsters. Defense determines how well it can defend you, the higher

the defense power, the stronger your opponent's monster has to be to get

past it. Some monsters have effects to expand their usefullness.

For example: The monster "Exiled Force" is a level 4 monster with 1000

points for both attack and defense. It makes up for its weak power with the

ability to destroy itself along with another monster on the field.

Spells are cards that do many different things. They can help your monsters,

protect you or annoy your opponent. They're divided into types and their

activation must follow the Spell Speed rules.

Traps are cards that do effects like magic cards. The difference is that

they are mostly used against your opponent. Their activation requires that

you first place them face down on your field during your turn and activate

them after your turn ends. They also follow the Spell Speed rules but they

start at level 2.

3c. Attributes

Attributes:

Page 6: Yu-Gi-Oh GX Duel Academy - Walkthrough

Monsters are divided into 6 attributes: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Light, and

Dark. This affects their compatibility with other cards as well as their

weaknesses. Water monsters make good use of the spell cards known as

"A legendary ocean". If you are using a deck with many water monsters, this

card will help them greatly.

3da. Monster Types

Types: All cards are divided into types, let's go into monsters first.

Like attributes, types also affect the compability of monsters with other

cards and their weaknesses but due to the fact that there are so many types

of cards, these are more specific than attributes. The monsters are divided

into these types...

Dragon - Zombie - Warrior - Spellcaster - Beast-warrior - Beast - Winged

Beast - Fiend - Fairy - Insect - Dinosaur - Reptile - Fish - Sea Serpent -

Machine - Thunder - Aqua - Pyro - Rock - Plant.

Plus some others like Spirit, Fusion, Effect and Ritual.

Ritual are blue cards, summoned by Ritual spells and tribute of monsters

that the sum of their levels is equal or greater than that of the ritual

monster from your field or hand.

Fusion are Violet cards, summoned by combining the 2 correct monsters and

using spells such as Polymerization. They can also be summon by their own

effect (VWXYZ monsters) or by effects of monsters like "Cyber Stein".

Spirit monsters are monster that are returned to its owner's hand at the

end of a turn unless "Spiritual Energy Settle Machine" is face up on the

field.

Page 7: Yu-Gi-Oh GX Duel Academy - Walkthrough

3db. Spell types

Now for the spells and traps.

Spells Consists of Normal, Continuous, Equip, Field, Quick play and

Ritual.

Normal Spells are just placed into a Spell/Trap zone to do their thing

and disappear (depending on what the card does)

Equip Spells are placed onto monsters for support or hurt them.

Continous Spells remain on the field until they are destroyed. Their

effect remains until they are gone.

Field Spells are placed on the "Field" card zone. These power up monsters

and do other things but they are destroyed normally and when another

field spell is placed.

Quick play Spells are the only spells that are not on Spell Speed LV 1.

You can play them like a normal spell or like a trap.

Ritual Spells are used to special summon Ritual monsters.

3dc. Trap types

Traps... Traps consist of Normal, Counter and Continuous.

Normal traps are placed face down and activated later after your turn

has ended. Their speed is level 2.

Counter Traps are usually cards that negate and destroy other cards.

They're the only cards that are LV3 and can only be countered by

counter traps.

Page 8: Yu-Gi-Oh GX Duel Academy - Walkthrough

Continuous Traps work just like the spells... The activation is the

only difference. Their speed is level 2.

3e. Phases

Start of game: You start the game by deciding who goes first, then draw

5 cards from your deck and take turns playing.

A player's turn is divided into Phases... Draw, Standby, Main 1, Battle

Main 2, End.

Draw Phase is when you draw 1 card, a trap card set in the last turn can

be activated at this point.

Standby Phase is only used for effects of cards, nothing else.

Main phase 1 is when you do most of the essential things. Summoning

monsters, playing spells, setting traps. 1 normal summon can be done

per turn. Main 1 and 2 are the only time a normal summon can be done.

Battle Phase is when you do battle using your monsters against your

opponent. Here you may activate trap cards to mess with your opponents

monsters and prevent him from dealing damage to you.

Main phase 2 is basically Main phase 1. Thing is that you can't go into

battle again. This phase is best used to set cards if your opponent

screwed you in the battle phase.

3f. Summons

A summon is when a monster enters the playing field. There are different

ways to summon a monster.

Page 9: Yu-Gi-Oh GX Duel Academy - Walkthrough

Normal summon is when you place a level 4 or lower monster on the field

in face up attack position. 1 normal summon per turn is the limit here.

Tribute summon is a normal summon at the cost of tributing 1 monster

that's already on your field. As I explained before, this is for high

level monsters. levels 5-6 require 1 tribute and all above level require

2.

Special Summon is when you use a ritual, spell, trap, fusion or monster

effect to place a monster on the field. Monster that are special summoned

CANNOT be placed face down.

Flip summon is considered a Special summon. It's when you place a "Set"

monster into face-up attack position. Some monsters have "Flip effects"

which are activated at this time or when attack by an opposing monster

(Unless that monster is Sasuke Samurai or a Mystic Swords Lv?)

4. Walkthrough

===========================================================================

The part that covers the duelists, Written examinations, Practical exmans

and timed duels. Let's start with the duelists first.

NOTE: I'm probably missing a few cards so this won't be exact, it's meant

to give you an idea of what you should expect. Also, I will not list the

"Staple" cards (Cards such as Torrential Tribute) as you should expect

such cards from everyone.

This list may suck and be inaccurate so you may want to look at TSmith's

FAQ for better and more accurate stuff there seeing as how it's more

focused. These are just the duelists you've seen duel in the Anime and a

couple more. I won't list them all.
