‘Yorkshire Sculpture Park, with its Moores and Hepworths dotting the landscape, has become one of Britain’s most respected art collections’JONATHAN JONES, THE GUARDIAN

Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an internationally renowned centre for modern and contemporary sculpture, presenting work by some of the world’s most extraordinary artists in over 500 acres of beautiful, historic parkland and five indoor galleries. In 2014, YSP was named Art Fund Museum of the Year.

This summer, celebrate the extraordinary work of Sir Anthony Caro in a major exhibition at YSP, in partnership with Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle.

Also see a solo exhibition of work by renowned papercut artist Rob Ryan, in YSP Centre.

See the elegant sculptural glass forms of internationally acclaimed artists, Laura de Santillana and Alessandro Diaz de Santillana, presented in the 18th century Chapel; and explore Henry Moore’s profound relationship with land in Henry Moore: Back to a Land, which continues in the Underground Gallery and open air.

What’s On Summer 2015

CARO IN YORKSHIRE 18.07.15–01.11.15 Longside Gallery, YSP Centre and open air

#caroinyorkshire

Presented in partnership with Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle, this major project celebrates the extraordinary career of one of Britain’s greatest sculptors, Sir Anthony Caro (1924–2013), and his long association with the Yorkshire region.

Caro in Yorkshire is grounded in two exhibitions at The Hepworth Wakefield and YSP. While the YSP exhibition showcases Caro’s rich relationship between practice and painting, The Hepworth Wakefield takes the artist’s thoughts on architecture as a starting point. ‘Sculpture is drawn to either painting or architecture.’ Caro, 2007

At YSP, Caro in Yorkshire features a display of models in YSP Centre; large-scale works in the open air; and culminates in a significant presentation in Longside Gallery. Within the gallery, the exhibition traces the evolution of Caro’s career from early figurative bronzes and drawings – some annotated by Henry Moore

during Caro’s time as his assistant – to the ‘shocking’, brightly painted constructions of the early 1960s. This radical departure was, in part, due to Caro’s association with painters such as Kenneth Noland and Jules Olitski, as well as an ongoing dialogue with his wife, Sheila Girling, herself a painter. The exhibition concludes with a selection of Last Sculptures which the artist suggested showing at YSP, during his last visit to the Park in 2012.

Caro in Yorkshire has been developed in collaboration with the artist’s family and studio, and with the active involvement of Sheila Girling, before her death earlier this year.

HENRY MOORE: BACK TO A LAND Until 06.09.15 Underground Gallery and open air

‘A charming and illuminating insight...’ Nancy Durrant, The Times

Offering a fresh perspective on the work of Henry Moore (1898–1986), this major exhibition features more than 120 works that consider the artist’s profound relationship with land. Born into a mining family in Castleford, West Yorkshire, Moore is one of the most important artists of the 20th century and was a founding patron of YSP.

Produced in partnership with The Henry Moore Foundation, the exhibition includes the original drawings that illustrated Jacquetta Hawkes’ seminal book A Land and explores Moore’s lifelong curiosity with what lies beneath – from the coalfields and geology of Britain to bones and skeletal structures.

Back to a Land examines the artist’s radical notion of placing sculpture in the landscape.

Monumental sculptures, such as Large Two Forms (1966–69), are displayed in his preferred Country Park setting, against dramatic views and changing skies.

The exhibition includes a rare opportunity to see artefacts from the artist’s studios and family collection curated by his daughter, Mary Moore.

EVENT: MEMORIES OF MOORE 30.07.15 / 19.00 / £12, YSP Friends £10.50 Celebrate the life of Henry Moore by exploring personal stories with those who knew the artist well, including his grandson Gus Danowski; David Mitchinson, former Head of Collections and Exhibitions at The Henry Moore Foundation; Malcolm McLeod, former Keeper of Ethnography at the British Museum; and YSP’s Peter Murray.

LAURA DE SANTILLANA AND ALESSANDRO DIAZ DE SANTILLANA Until 06.09.15 Chapel

#santillanas

YSP presents an exhibition of elegant sculptural forms by internationally renowned artists, Laura de Santillana and Alessandro Diaz de Santillana, in YSP’s 18th century Chapel. The Venetian siblings are descendants of the Venini glassware dynasty, established by Paolo Venini on the island of Murano in 1921.

Laura and Alessandro learned and honed their skills at Venini during their early careers, and they have each gone on to develop distinctive practices that combine traditional techniques along with contemporary methods of working.

Despite the correlation in their heritage and a shared basic material, Laura and Alessandro’s visual vocabulary and techniques are radically different. Experimentation, risk-taking and innovation drive their work, fed by widespread travel and collaborations with glassmaking experts across the world.

Colour is fundamental to Laura’s work, from subtle, misty opaque white forms through to the strikingly intense Untitled (2015), which has the luminous quality of neon. Alessandro’s passion and inspiration is water, which translates to the incredible treatment of the surface in his works, many of which have a strong painterly quality. The nuances of texture, surface and colour in the remarkable objects they produce are heightened in the contemplative spaces and diffuse the natural light of the Chapel.

EVENT: ARTISTS TALK 13.08.15 / 19.00 / £8 Enjoy this rare opportunity to hear Laura de Santillana and Alessandro Diaz de Santillana talk about their YSP project.

ANTON BURDAKOV: ASSEMBLY 28.06.15–04.08.15 Visiting Artist and Bothy Gallery

How do we want to live? Assembly explores this fundamental human question through considering the artist studio as an environment that may fulfill our elusive yearnings and daily needs. Approaching this question as an architectural project Burdakov, and a selected community of participants, will develop an evolving sculptural installation within the Bothy Gallery, informed by context and audience.

Resulting in an artist studio that seeks to make aspiration visible, Assembly reflects on how physical and social spaces are created as we make our way in life guided by ideals and hopes.

Currently based in London and Berlin, Anton Burdakov studied neuroscience at the University of Cambridge and sculpture at the Royal College of Art in London.

EILEEN ADAMS: AGENT OF CHANGE 26.09.15–22.11.15 Open 11.00–15.00, Sat–Tues NAEA

Visual education has taken art out of the gallery into school grounds and onto the street. Collaborations between pupils, teachers, architects, planners and artists have created new learning opportunities. You can learn to draw, but you can also draw to learn! Agent of Change shows how revolutionary initiatives have prompted change in art, design and environmental education.

Agent of Change – along with Adams’ latest book, Visual Literacy, to be published in autumn 2015 by the Loughborough Design Press – is the most recent acquisition by the National Arts Education Archive (NAEA) at YSP.

Join the (R)EVOLUTION conference on 17 October for an opportunity to acknowledge the NAEA’s importance in conserving material from key educators and their students to create a significant body of knowledge to guide future practice.

BOB AND ROBERTA SMITH: ART FOR ALL 05.09.15–03.01.16 Garden Gallery and open air

Bob and Roberta Smith’s installation Art for All has been developed in response to the holdings of the National Arts Education Archive (NAEA) at YSP, which documents over 100 years of art education. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the archive, Art For All extends the artist’s provocative advocacy for the role of art in lives and education and invites ideas toward an art curriculum for the digital 21st century.

Sharing key material and ideas from the NAEA, including the original artwork for A. E. Halliwell’s iconic travel posters, each bay in the gallery presents a pivotal era in art education from 1914 to the present day, including The Child Art Movement and Basic Design.

The exhibition, and major open-air work Art Makes Children Powerful (2013), demonstrates the artist’s continued commitment to the right of everyone, especially children, to access art, as well as the continued relevance of the NAEA.
