CDon carn is a cool guy – like the jazz music he plays, there is an impetuosity and sense of fun about him. Like the classical music that inspires and feeds him, he possesses intelligence and an endur-ing spirit. These qualities, along with natural humility, combine to make him an outstanding teacher of music.

“Music is one of those things that people take for granted. It is rare to see or hear of anyone that doesn’t like some type of music. Imagine a world without music and the effect it would have on our lives!”

Fortunately for York City kids, they don’t have to imagine such a place, because Don is holding the door open to the magical realm of music. Native to York, Don is a man with a plan. A plan to inspire any child he works with to go to college, to grow into excellence with music, to understand the bigness of the world and the opportunities that lie within it. But first, it’s just about getting kids to practice!

“I understand how it is. A lot of these kids have big challenges. I tell them, don’t let the art go. As a musician, as an artist, the hard times will help you create something amazing. I enable them to keep at it.”

Don teaches strings in the York City school district and also private lessons. He loves to transcribe popular music – writing out scores by hand – into arrangements for strings. It’s a way for kids, and audi-ences, to connect more directly to classical instruments. And Don is all about connection. For himself, as a longtime gigging musician as well as a teacher, he understands the power of music to create deep friendships. His time spent on the road with his own jazz band, Extremity, brought him through highs and lows of life back to his community in York. And while he loves performing, teaching is a passion that feeds his soul.

“I really enjoy teaching young people and watching them grow. Music is one of the few disciplines where a teacher can watch progress almost on a daily basis. Few teachers have that luxury and reinforcement. It is quite a feeling. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else!”

g i V e b a c kDon’s first private student was Patrick Dahlheimer and his brother. Chad Taylor and Chad Gracey were also students; Don taught, mentored, and encouraged “the guys” who later formed the band Live. “I’ve never seen a group of guys like that ever. That talented, that smart, and they came back to York to take care of York. They didn’t have to do that. I really appreciate that.” Don’s giving, giving back.

the good life is available on a daily basis at the Holy Hound. Simple pleasures, like an extraordinary selection of craft beers, and easy, friendly company are always on tap. A spirit of independence and individuality describes the craft brewer and enthusiast. At the Holy Hound, Scott Eden has created an atmosphere in which people – anddogs, in the summer months – can relax and be themselves. In the best tradition of the “local,” Holy Hound offers a meeting place to both celebrate and commiserate over life’s ups and downs. The name Holy Hound came

from a source close to home – Scott’s two Vizslas, a big part of his family. For Scott, the connection between dogs and beer is obvious. “Of course, they are both fun. But more than that, dogs love you unconditionally, and you can unconditionally love beer: it will taste good no matter how you feel.” Dogs remind us that life can be uncomplicated, and meant to be enjoyed. A well-savored pint of good beer can do that too. So grab a pew, or belly up to the bar, Vizsla style, and lap up your brew of choice (mustache optional, but also fun!)

the best things in life are often the simplest, a guiding principle in the Esaan kitchen. Jai Delp stays true to her native Thai roots by staying true to her philosophy that food should be fresh, simple, with authentic ingredients and nothing artificial.

“Jai has to be true to her food, so we have the special ingredients flown in to have the most authentic Thai food around,” says Sam Delp, the other half of the Esaan

team. Genuine Thai products and home-made sauces are combined with locally sourced ingredients, offering a palate-tempting menu of seasonal exotic dishes that are also versatile. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free needs are all easily accom-modated without any sacrifice of flavor.

True also to the Delps’ life of travel, Esaan presents diners with another international treat: fantastic house made gelato. Italian

meets Thai? “Why not?” laughs Jai. “When people get up to choose their flavor, they become like little kids again, giggling. It’s fun. Esaan is a place where people can be themselves, and our food reflects that.”

Comforting, straightforward dishes, made with pleasure to be consumed with delight. A welcoming atmosphere that blends the local with the exotic. Easy, delicious, simply fabulous!

the yorktowne hotel embodies the term renaissance. From the stunning Renaissance Revival architectural style to the classic, sophisticated, and diverse quality of its hospitality offerings, the Yorktowne is the place to create special memories, revitalize a treasured occasion, or honor relationships.

Since 1925, the Yorktowne has been meeting the evolving needs of the York community, and in March of 2013, a new service began at the hotel’s refined Commonwealth Room.

Afternoon Tea will be served on Thursdays from 2 – 4:30 pm, offering an authentic and fun take on a cherished tradition.

Perfect for a special family outing, as a precursor to an afternoon of cards (bring them along!), or as a luscious treat for friends, the Afternoon Tea is a unique experience in York. Fine china and quality loose-leaf teas accompany an elegant presentation of tea sandwiches, house-made pastries, and breads and scones.

Tea is experiencing its own renaissance, while at the same time remaining deeply traditional. The Afternoon Tea is designed to celebrate this revival, by providing a time-honored experience with fresh, varying menu interpretations of beloved teatime favorites.

Relax into the renewing ritual of taking tea, letting the Yorktowne pamper you with graciousness and ease.

victor’s, or ‘vix’ as it has come to be called, is the embodiment of revitalization. Whether you look to the building itself – a church with quite a colorful history – to the menus, décor, drinks – tableside Absinthe service, rotating craft beers, homemade bitters and designer cocktails – or the Executive Chef, george sheffer – who began as a dishwasher and returned to be the culinary leader – Vix is a showcase of the old made new, offering a local neighborhood feel combined with intimate urbanity. there’s homesteading, á la Little House on the Prairie, and then there is homesteading, á la Sign of the Wagon. While both do involve wagons, courage, and creativity, the artists’ homestead at 154 East Philadelphia Street in York is more than a home. The 1904 Victorian building is also a community arts outpost, the present-day collaboration of musicians Pete Richards and Lindsey keeney that includes a gallery, living space, concert venue and recording studio.

“A big part of us moving into this house was the Artist Homestead Program. It provided a forgivable loan to help artists buy a home, under the condition that the space be open to the public at times. This is one motivator for doing what we do,” Pete acknowledges. The house is perfect for such a project, located near the central core of York and comprising three stories and a basement. Pete and Lindsey open the first floor as a gallery for Lindsey’s paintings and other featured artists on First Friday, a York downtown tradition. And, when the gallery scene rolls up at 9pm, the after party gets started with live music from local musicians and traveling artists, and their own band, Free Breakfast.

Free Breakfast is a bit of a local institution, playing every Monday night at the First Cap, and Sign of the Wagon has hosted the First Friday gigs without fail since 2009, in addition to smaller house concerts. Romances have kindled and blossomed under their roof, and many a traveling band has found a gig, space to crash, and often, a free breakfast. Pete and Lindsey love their York City life and the venue they have created.

“I love watching York suddenly grow,” says Lindsey, who grew up here. “People are excited about music and art, and enthusiastic about doing interesting things.”

Pete concurs: “There is so much positive energy. York has created an environment that is more like promote your friend rather than compete with them. The arts are really community-based here.”

In York City’s burgeoning creative scene, Sign of the Wagon is a sign of the times.

york has a rich history of industry and innovation, so it comes as no surprise to see young, hometown entrepreneurship rising up through the ranks. Days of heavy manufacturing may be waning, but what is waxing is the fresh, healthy ambition of businesswomen like Sarah Lanphier and her company, Nuts About Granola.

Sarah is no stranger to discipline. As an accomplished triathlete, she knows about logging miles, facing failure, and celebrating success. All principles, in fact, that one can apply to running a small – but growing – company.

“Athletics taught me how to set goals, not achieve them, and re-evaluate to some-thing more realistic to attain success. With training you go through intense cycles; I know how to work hard.”

Nuts About Granola is committed to the local community. Sarah insists on the highest quality products possible: organics, local sweeteners, and US sourced ingre-dients. The company is invested in York, sponsoring local athletics and programs for kids. “The outlook and growth model of the company is to be solid in the area to eventually create more jobs and be a feature of the York community. We’re not merely focused on fast growth. Nuts will always be a locally oriented brand, no matter how big we become.” A taste of success we can all enjoy!

with equal parts brilliance, fearlessness, and punk-nerd wit, Wyatt McGuire and Nate Hess have created the app business in York. With an office full of Legos, bean bags, Play-Doh and the occasional three-legged dog, the question “are these guys serious?” may well arise. And the answer is yes, serious, very, about what they do – and, yes, creative and having fun while doing it. And what, exactly, does the crew at Idea Tree get up to? “We create data stuff. We are an app shop. We are builders. You have builders who build houses, cars; we build apps. We can build an app for anything.”

Idea Tree is employee-centered and driven by the ethos of the tech industry. “Fail faster,” meaning a fearless determination to create, succeed, fail, learn, keep going. They are in position to lead the tech industry in York, and committed to stay.

“We’ve been in York for some hard times. You put your head down and walk forward. We stay because of our amazing clients, and because the city is on the verge of doing great things.”

Self-styled as “old-school nerds,” Wyatt & Co. create new tools for the evolving needs of business. What a great idea.

Each specific design needs to meet the client’s intent. If we have achieved that by working hard for them over the course of the project, I get extreme enjoyment in that process. At LSC we work hard, meet deadlines, but also have fun doing it!

I always love challenges and like to look at what I have learned and where I can improve. I enjoy working with clients to help them put their ideas on paper and seeing a project evolve from schematic design to construction. LSC has a friendly work environment and I have the opportunity to be a part of a wide variety of projects .

An enormous fringe benefit of my profession is that I get to meet interesting, sometimes eccentric people; and then learn all about them and what they do, so we can try to give them the best space in which to do it. I get to work with people who make things well… we are fortunate to have such a pool of talented craftsmen, locally.

the fundamental point of human relating is the willingness and ability to connect. Individuals exchanging ideas, time, and energy leads to families, communities, businesses, and eventually, governments doing the same. Technology provides the gateway through which human beings can connect in any way they choose – from the briefest hello to the most profound communication of support.

For technology to be the extraordinary pathway it is, the infrastructure must be in place to support it. Enter United Fiber & Data (UFD), York’s newest technology company, intent on building a fiber-optic network and data centers to propel Pennsylvania into the global arena of tech readiness and connectivity.

UFD isn’t an anonymous corporate giant, however. The team is focused on social entrepreneurship as well as playing big. UFD was formed to facilitate progress, business, and growth for the central PA economy. And, it was founded with the belief that information and education are essential to the improvement and awareness of the human condition.

United Fiber & Data is a company with a mission to succeed: facilitating a web of relationships throughout the world.

in the global age, jobs, people, and communities are mobile and often transient. The advantages of this are many, but often what is lost is a sense of home, family, and local connection. The White Rose Bar & Grill is a place for long-time York residents and visitors alike to meet and eat, with a sense of comfort and place that is created by consistency of food, spirit, and staff.

Indeed, much of owner Tom Sibol’s satisfaction in running his restaurant is the fact that he can provide a good living for so many

York locals. “Staff is so important to me; it makes me proud to employ 80-85 people. Many of my employees have been with us for years, they are like family – the restaurant is a family.”

York is a city that is grounded in relationships and a proud sense of history and community. The White Rose has been a part of that for eight decades. Started by Sibol’s grandparents and continuing to employ his children as well as a loyal staff – some for as long as 20 years – the White Rose, in the broadest sense, is truly a family affair.

take some time out to feel your feelings, not just act on them. You, too, are here to be of service to your fellow siblings: animal, veg-etable, and mineral. Connecting with your heart (not just your shiny mind) is good for the planet and for you.

c a n c e r

06.21 : 07.22Time to get out of your sweet little shells, Crabs, because there are fantastic oppor-tunities abounding to have an identity make-over. The Universe has issued a call to action, and me thinks that a timely response would serve you well. The realm of creativity and kiddos may feel stuck and/or overwrought; by dealing with the feelings of hopelessness that may arise, you may actually be freeing yourself up for increased communication with the muses. It’s possible that by finding your creative voice, you allow all kinds of juicy into your heart space. There may be more crunches in the relationship arena. Really, you are going to have to let some people go if they can’t get on board with the new you. Don’t hold yourself back out of obliga-tion, and whatever you do, tell the truth.

heaven’s sake just choose! The payoff for your continued emotional fortitude is in-spired flow between your relationships and your contribution to the collective. You may find deep revelations taking place in your relational world; if others are disappoint-ing or even failing you, remember, you always have yourself. And if you are failing yourself, ask someone else for help. Your dance right now is between self-reliance and intimacy and trust. Do allow yourself some retreat time when you need it; while grazing quietly on your own you may receive life-changing inspirations.

g e m i n i

05.21 : 06.20Okay kittens, you simply must take care of yourselves this quarter. There is an incredible amount going on in your world, still, yes, I know, but I insist you take some time out for reflection and rest. The grind of getting through the day may be getting you down. What is needed are deeply rejuvenating practices of self-care. And do you think, dear one, that you could ask for some help? The Cosmos is putting some unique personalities at your disposal: Make the most of them. The truth is, you must

07.23 : 08.23Holy asteroids, Batman, the urge to leave town and blow off domestic stuff just couldn’t be stronger. And yet, Leo darling, you must know by now that a faux-regal denial of your noble heart and its feelings is no-go. This is not a time for the thorn-in-the-paw routine or isolating yourself from those you are closest to. Think of your role models: Aslan, Mufasa… what would they do, given your current energy levels (low) and presenting issues? Actually, the time is totally now to rebuild your personal truth system via feeling your feelings and merg-ing with whatever Divine concept inspires you. Insight is coming in the work realm… wait for it… and when it does, don’t waste time on time past, just seize the day.

V i r g o

03.21: 04.20My dear, this new identity you are form-ing is so stimulating – especially to others, though you may be realizing that the world’s perception of you isn’t accurate anymore. It seems you have much news to share about the nature of being alive in the world. Learning possibilities are end-less; your biggest problem is choosing a direction. If you’ve been paying attention to your dreams and spiritual leanings, there is a chance you are feeling better about life and all the change that’s afoot in your psyche. You must learn to play well with others this quarter, or find yourself wandering the moors alone. See above for general invitations to emote responsibly.

t a u r u s

04.21 : 05.20Enough with the unusual dreams, sup-pressed energy, and general feeling of being in a cold shower. The next three months sees you getting a bit of a boost in self-esteem and possibly finances. Choices of how to make money are upon you; this may feel a little over-stimulating so for

greetings fellow travelers! in the next quarter, we are all being invited to vertiginous thresholds of our emotional comfort zones: the opportunity here is to responsibly manage ourselves and face our fears like the adults we are. and, we are still in an initiation time for human consciousness, so we are quite possibly going to be feeling a large-ish gap between the old regime and the emerging ways we all get down to the business of living. we can’t knock the ball out of the park unless we step up to the plate. batter up!

12.21 : 01.20My, oh my, but things are heating up on the home front. You’ve got new emotional reali-ties a-go-go, and it isn’t exactly the way your mama raised you. Never mind, when life gives you matches, play with them. I know I don’t have to tell you, dear Capricorn, to be responsible at the same time you are burning the house down. Meanwhile, what is happening out in your social sphere? All kinds of disturbing hi-jinks carefully crafted by the Universe to get your attention. Some of your associations might need to go, and while you’re at it, how about adding a non-violent communication course to your to-do list? Romance is more likely in mid- to late summer rather than now, though that next-door neighbor might harbor a stable, earthy sensuality you’ve overlooked. Bake a pie and designate yourself the welcome wagon.

a q u a r i u s

01.21 : 02.18Some fame might be forthcoming, O Bearer of Buckets, if you keep up the phenomenal artistic work. Of course then you will have that to deal with, when you’d rather stay home and watch the molecules in the paint dry, calculating their velocity and relativity, but oh well. I’m thinking your work might be taking on a new emotional or psychological depth, and that may well be the tipping point for rising to points skyward. In other news, the subconscious still remains pesky, and you’d rather be tripping in the fascinating realms of your own conscious brain than indulging the shadowy metaphors of your psyche. How-ever! If you delve deeply into that dark and shady realm, may you not find ore of precious value? Look and see. I predict creative genius in even greater amounts and variety if you do.

p i s c e s

02.19 : 03.20Dearest, I want you to write an emotion-ally rich and stunningly compassionate monologue about your gambols in the Meta, and go forth and deliver it on any convenient street corner while your finan-cial house is off riding roller coasters. You might get some folding cash from your pure and humble busking, and this way the rent will get paid. Your impatience with the slowness of society to transform is understandable, but you’ve got to settle in to some kind of a workable routine. Meanwhile, despite your thoughts to the contrary, the Universe does want you to be giving your psychic gifts to the world, and doing so with some authority. Of course, you’ll have to navigate your feelings about that too, but even as you feel you are slip slidin’ away, your new skin is shiny with power and translucent with truth gems. Please, do, let everybody see.

ties for work and relating will continue to swim by. The issue these days: What are you doing with all that anger, impetuosity, frustration, or pure itchy I-have-to-get-the-heck-out of-this-body-or-I’ll-explode sorts of feelings? I invite you to get a punching bag or a Nerf bat for battering the couch, all the better to be a human being with. Alliances are going to be revealing this quarter; ultimately you get to work on your projections and power bids, and where you give your own power away to preserve some moldy status quo. Be bold, dear Scorpions, but don’t give in to blood lust. This, too, shall pass.

s a g i t ta r i u s

11.22 : 12.21It’s a pretty distracting world out there what with a shiny new person coming into your life every other minute. Some of these relationships might be challeng-ing even for laid back archers, and there could be an exciting but unusual bid for obsessive attachment coming out of your surprised mouth. What ho, this strange behavior? Chalk it up to an atypical sense of insecurity. The time is nigh, dear Sag, to have a personal reckoning with your-self. Put down your bow and quiver, and rest by the Cosmic fire. Communicate your feelings and fears, and let the stars listen. You might fear isolation if you ‘fess up to your less than pretty truths, but nature abhors a vacuum, and if you let some of that old icky stuff out, some-thing noble and inspiring can come in. Meanwhile the home fires are in a pretty confusing state, one moment clear and another diffuse. Old family patterns of relating or outdated spiritual truths may need a scrub down. Again, I know this isn’t your favorite work to do, but every operating system needs an occasional update to be secure.

Your world arena is expanding as you re-spond to the Universe’s call to take life a little less seriously on the career front. Yes, yes, use your discernment by all means, but maybe loosen your own leash a bit? It is possible some truths may be coming to light that you would rather not see, yet all information is of potential use – don’t be a tough guy, ask for help if you need it. Ultimately you are being asked to make the Divine your girl/boyfriend, but you have to reach out – got it?

You are going to have new opportunity for revelation in the “I am worthy because…” department such that you can redefine your relationship to relationship in a whole new sexy, shiny way. Don’t let your mother’s voice interfere when you are in the midst of an edgy embrace with passion (either with yourself or another). You decide what floats your boat!
