Exam Question:

• (a) Planning meals for older people in a residential home is important. Discuss the points that should be considered when planning meals for older people. [5]

In your books write the above and then list 5 things you need to think about when planning meals. Think in general points as well as those specifically to do with elderly people. Then write the points as shown below.

Example: I need to make sure that the meal has a variety of colours. A meal of cauliflower, mashed potato and white fish is dull with only white this would need to be improved by adding peas to give a green colour and a cheese sauce with a red tomato garnish. The reason for the is that the elderly often have poor appetites and the food needs to look appetising.

Remember the PEE rule make the point, give an example and explain the point. For example: When preparing food you need to make sure hair is tied up and out of the way of food. This is to protect the food from hairs/bacteria getting into the food. Often a hair net is worn.

To gain full marks you need to talk about a range of things and not just personal hygiene in both sections.
