Functional and aesthetic aspects of the design

Functional Aesthetic

Invisible zipper - open and close the garment so the wearer can get in and out of the skirt

Skirt is aesthetically appealing due to the brightly coloured and patterned fabric and the fun nature of the design.

Hem on skirt and lining neatens the lower edges of the garment so it looks appealing

Colour - fabric is primarily made up of cool colours (blues, greens) and features underwater images creating a colourful and fun garment

Lining on the inside of the skirt makes the skirt comfortable for the wearer as seams don’t rub against skin

Shape - garment is an A-line fitted skirt which creates a triangular design drawing the eye to the waist of the wearer and then out towards the knee

Overlocked seams - neaten raw edges of seams so they won’t fray

Line - vertical side seams draw the eye up the body.

Waistband helps fit skirt correctly to body (work with body shape)

Skirt design is balanced, creating a symmetrical appearance that is even.

100% cotton plain weave fabric is strong and durable and maintains shape of garment so it will last a long time

Texture - plain weave fabric is slightly rough, creating aninteresting texture. The lining is smooth against the skin, so will be comfortable for the wearer

1.5cm seams hold fabric pieces of skirt together, giving shape and design to skirt

The invisible zipper colour matches the colour theme of the skirt

Darts at the back of the skirt to create shape in the garment.

Darts in the skirt create a fitted shape that looks aesthetically appealing to the eye

Hook and Eye - closes the top of the skirt so the skirt sitsneatly on the body

The turtles on the fabric are cute and represent the environment for the wearer

Strengths and weaknesses of the design

My garment features overlocked seam edges which prevent unwanted fraying from occurring

and keep the garment neat and tidy through wash cycles and wear. The darts at the back of the skirt sit well on the body and prevent bumps and folds appearing when the skirt is being worn. The design of the fabric is whimsical and fun, creating interest in the garment. The zipper and hook and eye are easy to use and can be done up by the wearer. Cotton is a common fabric that majority of people know how to wash clean. It’s also easy to clean.

The fabric on the garment features a heavy blue throughout the whole skirt. This colour couldbleed and transfer onto other garments when in the wash for cleaning. My garment is very simple, whereas a potential target market could be looking for interest in the skirt like frills, etc. The fabric pattern is quite overwhelming and busy, which can lead to confusion when viewing the item. The skirt appeared to be a little bit shorter than expected, which can lead to the wearer constantly tugging and pulling the skirt down.

MANUFACTURINGSPECIFICATIONS

Description

I have constructed an A-line skirt with a waistband, made from 100% cotton, staple spun, plain weave fabric. I have used McCall’s M5590 pattern to construct the skirt. The waistbandpulls the skirt in at the waist to create shape in the garment. There are 2 darts on the back of the skirt and 2 darts on the front of the skirt to create a fitted appearance. The skirt sits high on the waist, which is the design I wanted to achieve, and finishes mid-thigh. The skirt features a dark blue invisible zipper down the centre back seam. There is 2 hook and eyes at the end of the waistband at the back to close the two edges together. I made four modifications to the skirt. The original pattern is high waisted, below knee length and features tabs. Firstly, I shortened the pattern so it was mid thigh length, as I didn’t like the long length of the original skirt, which was below knee length. Originally, there was a split in the centre back seam of the skirt, which I removed. I added light blue 100% acetate lining to the inside of the skirt so the garment is neater and sits on the body well. Lastly, I added a waistband, which was not in the original pattern, and hook and eyes. This gives the garment a more fitted appearance.

Suitability for end purpose

100% cotton- Homespun

-High strength so won’t break-Good dimensional stability so skirt keeps its shape-Good abrasion resistance so skirt won’t tear-Medium drape so skirt keeps itsshape on the wearer-Good colour fastness and sun resistance so fabric looks good for length of garment

100% cotton-Staple, spun

yarnHigh twist

Plain weave

Due to the crystalline nature of 100% cotton, it is a suitable fibre touse to construct the skirt due to its strength. This also makes cotton a durable fibre so it will last a long time and won’t tear when the fabric is against concrete, chairs, etc. Staple spun, high twist yarn is suitable to construct the skirt as the properties of high strength created from the twisting, contributes to the durability of the yarn. Plain weave fabric has medium drape so it will sit well on the body. Plain weave fabric also achieves good dimensional stability and the fabriccan be constructed into the fitted skirt shape.

100% acetate- lining

-Good dimensional stability so skirt keeps its shape-Good colour fastness so lining looks good for length of wear-Good drape so lining sits well under skirt-Soft hand so lining is comfortable against the skin

100% acetateHigh twist,

MultifilamentPlain weave

Due to the high crystallinity properties of acetate, it is a strong fibre and will last the length of the garment. The circular cross sectionof the acetate fibre creates a smoothyarn. The multifilament yarns are smooth and will be comfortable for the wearer. The plain weave fabric structure is suitable for lining as it will move with the body and will drape well against the body, making it comfortable to wear. Plainweave fabric also has good dimensional stability, so the lining will keep its shape, as well as the shape of the cotton skirt fabric.

100%

-Strong and abrasion resistant so it holds seams

Polyester is strong and durable due to the crystalline nature of the fibre, so its use as sewing thread means seams of the skirt won’t fall

apart or tear during wear. The multifilament yarns are smooth, so the yarn is not rough against the skin. The high twist nature of the yarn enhances its strength. Due to its colour fastness and sun resistance, the yarn will maintain its bright colour and aesthetic appeal.
