Yr 10 ‘How to Save the Earth’ inquiry project
Environmental Management Plan
Scenario There are many environmental changes that
have an impact on different environments. Organisations or their specialist consultants often prepare environmental management plans (EMPs).
EMPs recommend the steps to be undertaken to solve identified problems in managing the environment. They are also useful for predicting and minimising the effects of potential future changes. These strategies are designed to either remove or control the problem(s).
Your task
You will be put into teams of 3 Each class team will research and prepare
an EMP that deals with a specific environmental issue in the urban CBD environment and then present it to the class.
Decide on an environment within the CBD, identify the threat/s it faces and then devise 3 key inquiry questions you would like to answer.
What is an EMP? How do we make one? Watch this video to get an overview of what
an EMP is and how to complete one in your group
http://www.projectsplus.com.au/secure/ProjectBrief?projectId=121&code=PRO-0150&pk=94eec5e3077f4bd5#
How will it be presented? Two parts: Part 1: as a formal typed report, just like an
EMP would be presented. Part 2: with an accompanying visual
presentation, just like how a consultant would present their findings to the organisation
See ‘What EMP should cover’ document for areas to address and categories to split your report into
Assessment You will complete a reflection at the end of the
project You will provide a peer assessment for other
groups as you view their presentations The assessment rubric is also on the website
Timeline 1st 4 lessons (after today): creation of inquiry
questions, background research, development of maps, plan for fieldwork day
May 14: Fieldwork excursion to Melbourne CBD
Next 3 lessons (May 18-21): working on EMP in class
Due date and presentation of EMPs – Thursday 28 May
Step 1: group planningDecide on a particular environmental issue in the CBD. Choose from: Moving around the CBD (public transport,
cycling, road and water vehicle use, walking) Waterways (Yarra River, stormwater
discharge) Green spaces (parks and gardens in & around
the CBD) Waste management and recycling Energy use (street lighting, electrical signage
etc) If your group has a different idea, you need to
run it past teacher first
Step 1: group planning Come up with 3 key inquiry questions that will
become a focus of your study and a means of dividing the workload.
Download the EMP planning template to help you think about and decide what your team will research and who will be responsible for what.
To see what your EMP should address refer to ‘What EMP should cover’ document
Background Research Map of CBD area Maps highlighting where your management issue is
relevant/occurring in the CBD Define what the management issue is How is the issue currently being managed (refer to City of
Melbourne websites) Find out about the current effects/impacts of the issue Why is there the need for particular actions to address/reduce
current effects/impacts of the issue Economic benefits of activities currently occurring in relation to
your management issue Economic impacts if activity is stopped/reduced/prevented What FUTURE plans may already be in place to manage this
issue (refer to City of Melbourne websites)
Planning for fieldworkWhat evidence and data do you want to collect on the day? Surveys Photographs Sketches Numerical data (eg counting the number of a
particular item in an area) Brochures, tourism leaflets etc
