YQReviewtenant profile: redhead equipmentby Aftan Chobot, Marketing Coordinator, Redhead Equipment

With a love for flying, and six Redhead Equipment branches in five Saskatchewan locations, Gary Redhead frequently takes to the sky to visit his establishments. He has built a new hanger to store his planes and

fondly refers to the 14,000 sq. ft. space as “The Toy Box”.

This facility has played a large role in fulfilling the needs of Redhead Equipment. As the business has grown and expanded, Gary has been using his planes to send his senior management team for monthly visits to the branches. These planes are also used to send staff and clients to product demonstration sites and factory tours such as: Mack Trucks, Volvo, Case IH and Case Construction.

The purpose for this new build was to expand on space; as the last building could no longer accommodate Gary’s storage needs. With the construction of this new facility there have been a few new and much needed upgrades: over and above the increased space for plane storage, there is now more office space, Wilson sliding doors opposed to the previous bi-folding door, and increased tarmac and parking areas.

As Redhead Equipment continues to grow, Gary has provided a means for his staff and management teams to stay connected, and has maintained a team oriented culture throughout the large organization.

“Why Fly YQR?” contest winners enjoy their grand prizeby Kari Dean, Director of Communications, Regina Airport Authority

The ‘Rumour’ isby Kari Dean, Director of Communications, Regina Airport Authority

Above and Beyond: Courtney Coxsubmitted by a very thankful traveler

In the summer of 2011, Regina Airport Authority held the “Why Fly YQR?” campaign and contest. Nadine and Gerard Rousseaux were

the lucky grand prize winners of this contest receiving two free tickets on any direct flight via Regina International Airport along with a number of additional prize items. In February 2012, Nadine and Gerard jetted off on a hot holiday for two weeks of fun in the sun. In their own words, “It will be so nice to catch a cab and be at the airport in minutes to start our vacation”.

Congratulations to Nadine and Gerard Rousseaux winners of our “Why Fly YQR?” contest and recent travelers of the Regina International Airport!

The following was submitted in response to the efforts of Courtney Cox, Commissionaire, who went above and beyond to assist this stranded traveler.

“Thank you for helping me. You’re a bigtime lifesaver! God bless you!”

We are fortunate to have people like Courtney representing Regina International Airport and we would like to extend a big THANK YOU to him for going above-and-beyond the call of duty!

The rumour is Rumour Handcraft Inc. is a great little souvenir shop for locals and visitors alike to the Regina International Airport. Most recently Somerville Kitchen – A Quotidien Food Moments Blog submitted a

raving review of one of their favorite Regina stops, “…the most unique and well put together souvenir store of any airport I have been to around the world.”

The selection of items is not only unique but vast ranging from Saskatchewan jams and teas to local artwork, handmade scarves, hats, jewellery, giftware and books - this store has something for everyone.

Read more about this wonderful little shop and its’ offerings at http://somervillekitchen.blogspot.com/2012 and type in “Rumour has it” or stop by Rumour Handcraft (located on the second floor) at the Regina International Airport and check out this airport gem for yourself!

YQReviewFire Hall Safety – Training saves the dayby Jamie Smith, Firefighter, Regina Airport Authority

What’s Cooking at The Aviator Grill? by Diane Uhryn, Eurest Dining Services, Regina International Airport

Little did Patsy Laliberte know that when she took a fire extinguisher course several years ago that she would be saving Regina Airport Authority and its insurance companies thousands of dollars; as well as keeping her fellow

co-workers employed. On a late December night shift, while doing her normal routine of preparing for the morning customers, Patsy came upon a non-routine occurrence.

“I always take the same path through the kitchen door,” explains Pasty. “But that night I took a different path.”

It was while taking this different path that Patsy discovered the grill was on fire. She remembers yelling “Fire” and calling for her co-worker Ashwin Ramesh. Patsy then shut off the gas supply to the grill while asking Ashwin to grab a fire extinguisher. Ashwin was quick to respond and brought an extinguisher. She took the extinguisher, pulled the pin, and extinguished the fire. According to Ms. Laliberte, “It all happened so fast.”

This story is a great example of the benefits of fire extinguisher training. While everyone knows what a fire extinguisher looks like, and, hopefully, where to find one when it’s needed, the most important thing is to know how to use it when it’s needed.

Like Ms. Laliberte said, everything happens so fast when there’s a fire. People need to know immediately how to use an extinguisher to put out a fire. If an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, then certainly the small amount of time it takes to learn how to use a fire extinguisher properly is worth a lifetime of cure.

So don’t put it off any longer. Get out and sign up for a fire extinguisher training course, today. It only takes a short time, but it could have a lifetime of benefits.

Regina Airport Fire Hall will be presenting its annual fire extinguisher course June 20th and 21st.

Jim Hunter, CEO, Regina Airport Authority presenting a token of appreciation to Patsy

Laliberte and Ashwin Ramesh, The Aviator Grill

YQReviewRegina International Airport fundraiser for Kathy Seidaby Judy Plumpton, Administration, Regina Airport Authority

On February 29, 2012 the Airport Community pulled together and had a Bake Sale in the airport terminal to raise money for our family member Kathy Seida. Kathy is recovering from a medical challenge and we felt the need to

reach out and help in any way we could. She is a much loved member of the Airport Community and is always cheerful and positive and brings a little ray of sunshine to our day.

The Bake Sale was a HUGE success and we raised $1000 for Kathy.

Thank you everyone who contributed the baked goods and purchased them! Everything was delicious!

On March 31, 2012 a ceremony was held at 15 Wing Moose Jaw as the position of Honorary

Colonel was passed from outgoing-Honorary Colonel Yvette Moore to Regina Airport Authority President and CEO Jim Hunter (Brigadier-General retired).

The Honorary Colonel position is part of a community outreach program that began over a century ago, created to develop the relationship between military units in the Canadian Forces and their neighbouring communities. Through this program, the duties of an honorary colonel are to develop and promote strong ties between military personnel and their local community. Brigadier-General (retired) Hunter formed relationships and gained valuable knowledge of the organization while serving as Wing Commander of 15 Wing from 1995 to 1998 and has been active within Saskatchewan’s military community since then.

The official ceremony to transfer appointment of this position was held in conjunction with the 88th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

YQReview‘Displaying’ a passion for aviationby Spence Bourassa, BA, ATP, Regina/Saskatoon

My passion for aviation possesses no bounds - for I’ve been around aviation-related activities for most of

my life within the Regina area. In 1992, I completed my Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL). During 1996, I completed my Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL). Over ensuing years, my aviation credentials progressed to the point where I obtained my Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence (ATPL) during 2004. My aviation licences and ratings were completed primarily at the Regina Flying Club. I fly as a career pilot - and am now based in Saskatoon.

In 2005, I started to collect 1:400 scale, adult collectible aircraft mainly of Canadian operators. It was then when I played around with the idea that maybe they can be

part of an airport-like diorama. So, it was then when I started to construct the first of these three dioramas. I figured that I’d construct a “draft copy” of the present-day terminal building; but after five months of perpetually exhaustive work and patience, I decided that the aforementioned “draft copy” was going to be the final article! It took a lot of trial-and-error to make things appear realistic --- and believe me --- far, far more things went wrong than otherwise! Shortly thereafter, it needed a suitable environment in which for it to be placed. Ergo, I constructed an extremely accurate - via empirical data and information - a Regina Airport field environment. In fact, the Present Day diorama is actually in it’s third edition! (For I was not satisfied with the preceding two). During this time, my thoughts were that maybe I could start constructing Regina Airport dioramas of the past - and I have done that as well. (Both of which are smaller in size and are unlit). One day, I’ll construct a “winter scene” diorama of a late ‘90s version of our airport.

The Sky’s the Limit: Earl Spencer submitted by Emile Forest, Manager Airport Facilities & Environmental Officer, Regina Airport Authority

‘Displaying’ a passion for aviation CONT’D

Some of the building features (and unusual) materials are comprised of: modellers’ plastic, wooden dowels, old VCR VHS tape stickers, automotive pinstriping, plumber’s pipe, business cards, downloaded images, airline baggage tags, and even necklace beads! Recently, I endowed the Present Day display with an assortment of LED Lights. They range in size from 2 mm diameter LEDs (for the terminal building) to 0.75 mm multi-coloured lights for the balance of the airside airport environment. Moreover, There are blinking lights scattered about the field, such as: aircraft anti-collision lights, emergency rescue vehicle lights, and runway approach lights. These blinking lights are controlled by light sequencers located at each end of the display. The LED display is best viewed when outdoor ambient lighting conditions are dark.

I want to sincerely thank the folks with Regina Airport Authority for allowing me to display my dioramas inside the display case of your airport terminal building!

Thank you for your viewing!

Most of the Regina International Airport Community know Earl as the guy who is called upon time after time to tend to emergency issues whether it is day or night he can be counted on to answer the call. He

is the jack of all trades type individual who not only cares about the Airport but also is very meticulous about his work habits and true dedication to his work and the welfare of his staff. Earl until recently was a licensed Carpenter, has his fireman certificate and level 4th class, and now he has achieved another milestone in his life by taking the Electrician course which he passed with flying colors! He is now a licensed provincial Electrician and also has an Interprovincial License. His accomplishments show the dedication that he has in the Airport Community and for the travelling passengers that arrive and depart from this wonderful, well maintained Airport. Congratulations Earl, on a job well done and your recent achievement.

Regina Airport Authority thanks Spence for allowing us the opportunity to showcase his work and we encourage you to visit the airport display. We welcome your comments on this display, please send by email to: [email protected].
