TRANSCRIPT
Nashville, fondly known as “Music City,” is known as a dream destination for many aspiring musicians and entertainers hoping to make it big in the business. As the second largest city in Tennessee and also home to icons such as the Grand Ole Opry, this is a place where traditional southern country simplicity meets urban culture. Popular attractions here include the Country Music Hall of Fame, Opryland Hotel, Music Row, The Hermit-age (Andrew Jackson’s Home), and famous restaurants like Arnold’s and Pancake Pantry. But in the shadow of fame and the stage’s bright lights, this city struggles with problems of poverty, homelessness, and racial
tensions. In a community where many hope their dreams will come true, others have a hard time making ends meet.
Our youth and chaperones will have a wide variety of opportunities to serve the Nashville community, partnering with a number of organizations that are investing in the city in unique, creative, and deeply caring ways. You might spend time getting to know homeless veter-ans, organizing school supplies to give to Nash-ville schools in need, work-ing in a community garden alongside local residents, or hanging out with chil-
dren at local summer programs. In the eve-nings, your group will have the chance to ex-plore downtown Nashville and learn more about homelessness from one of our service partners. Groups may also attend a local church service or have the chance to visit Opryland.
YouthWorks has been serving in Nashville since 2010. The site was born through a partnership with the United Methodist Church’s division of Young People’s Ministry. Since 2011, Nashville has also been home to YouthWorks’ Southeast Region Office, so there is a full-time staff presence in the community as well.

The Women’s Book
Club will be meeting at
the Distillery on
Wednesday, July 13th
at 6:00 PM.
The July book to be
discussed is
“The Dressmaker"
by Kate Alcott.
PLEASE make sure you read
the right "The Dressmaker"
because there are two out
there.
Sandy Lindstrom is go-
ing to lead us for this
book's discussion.
For the August meeting,
August 3rd, we will be
reading Jojo Moyes
book, "One Plus
One".
We only have three weeks to
read this one!
If you haven't been able to
attend in the past, you are
welcome to join anytime.
Believe me, if you don't
finish the book, it is
totally alright that you
attend anyway!
At 10:30 that morning, the
congregation will be blessed
by a visit from Hasan Abdi,
the Imam of Islamic Mosque
in Green Bay;
Imam Hasan will
be joined by his
associate Hama-
yun. Hasan and
Hamayun will share a little bit
about the Muslim faith and
answer any questions we
might have.
Sunday, July 17th
During worship, we will have an order for
commissioning the youth and adults
whom the congregation is sending on
the mission trip to Nashville. And Scott
Conradt, was hired as the Director of
Youth and Family Ministry. Scott will be
officially installed into that position
After worship, we’ll have a little time to

Men on His Mission
will be doing their
highway clean-up
again this summer
on Highway 54
west of Oneida.
The next date is
Saturday, July 16th.
Meet at the Oneida
Assembly of God Church
at 7:30 AM (this usually
takes about an hour and a
half) and wear comfy
shoes. We need more
volunteers to help with this
outreach mission.
You must be at least 11 years old
to help. This would be a perfect
project for confirmation and high
school kids who need community
service hours.
If it’s raining that day, we'll meet
on Saturday, June 23rd. If you have
any questions, see John Olsen.

This month’s edition of (Not) The Sports Page is being preempted
by the following announcement…
July is shaping up to be quite
an exciting month around
St. John Lutheran Church…In
addition to events like ALF,
the Women’s Book Study, and
the Youth Mission Trip
(information about these
events can be found on
the calendar in this Commu-
niqué), I want to take this
opportunity to let you know
about a couple of important
dates in the life of the
congregation. Here goes…
Sunday, July 17th
Wow, is there a lot going on at
St. John on the 17th. During
worship, we will complete our
Summer Sermon Series on the
Psalms with a look at perhaps
the most well-known Psalm of
all. Also during worship,
we will have an order for
commissioning the youth and
adults whom the congregation
is sending on the mission trip
to Nashville. And that’s not
all…Last week, the congrega-
tion’s very own, Scott Conradt,
was hired as the Director of
Youth and Family Ministry.
Scott will begin work in this
new position on Monday,
July 11th, and will be officially
installed into that position in
worship on July 17th.
After worship, we’ll have a
little time to enjoy some treats
and welcome Scott onto the
congregation’s staff. At 10:30
that morning, the congrega-
tion will be blessed by a visit
from Hasan Abdi, the Imam of
Islamic Mosque in Green Bay;
Imam Hasan will be joined
by his associate Hamayun
(Hamayun said, “It’s pro-
nounced like Hawaiian but
with an “m” instead of a “w.”).
Hasan and Hamayun will share
a little bit about the Muslim
faith and answer any questions
we might have. It stands to be
a great opportunity to learn
about our Muslim sisters and
brothers right here in the
community we all call home.
(I am in the process of sched-
uling similar events with our
local Rabbi, Shaina Bacharach,
Mary, a member of the local
Bahai congregation, and a
leader from the local Sikh
congregation. More informa-
tion about dates and times will
be available soon.)
Sunday, July 31st
This is another biggie…
Sunday, July 31st, will be Chad
Welch’s last Sunday at St. John
before beginning his intern-
ship. Trent Zeitler will also be
starting his internship. So,
in worship, we will have an
order for sending these two
brothers in Christ on their
way as they continue their
theological and pastoral
education. Godspeed Chad
and Trent! We will also have a
liturgical recognition of the
ending of Chad’s time on the
staff of the congregation as
Director of Youth and Family
Ministry. After worship, we’ll
adjourn to the Fellowship Hall
for a celebration in Chad’s
honor.

Chad’s Musings on Youth & Faith
Why Church Still
Matters
Church matters and it matters
now, more than ever for our
youth.
We live in a society where
Sunday, let alone Wednesday,
is no longer sacred; a day for
worship and time with family.
In addition to shopping,
movies, football, sports
practices, recitals, games are
occurring more and more on
Sunday morning, afternoon,
and evening. In the past,
families didn't need to choose
between a tennis match or
worship. Today, families are
forced to choose. Youth are put
in the middle of expectations
from adults, coaches, and
parents alike. More often than
not, church is not the first
choice; many times, it is not
even on the list of choices.
One reason for this is the
individualization of our society.
Church is just another choice
on the menu of life. Church
doesn't cost anything to attend,
whereas dance, soccer, and
football all come with a price.
Then, back to expectations,
if I miss church, there isn't a
penalty of missed playing
time, or lost investments like
when practices or games are
missed. As youth strive to get
ahead, church just doesn't
look as good on a resume as
does involvement in a multi-
tude of other "team" activities.
In short, church is great if it's
convenient, if it fits into the
schedule, or I decide that it
meets my needs when I need
it.
With technology, who needs
to sit in a building? We can
listen to books, podcasts, or
watch the "Jesus Channel" on
cable. All of these I can do
when, or if, it fits my schedule.
Church does matter. It's not just
an appetizer. No, it's the main
course on the menu of life.
Luther says, “the Church is to
be for the world....that the
work of the Church is to bring
the Gospel. God's passion is
for the world. God's passion is
spread out into the world
through the Church-the Body of
Christ. To be a Christian is to
be connected to a Church-a
local expression of the Body of
Christ, and to participate in the
mission of the Church, that is,
to bring the message of God's
grace to a broken world.”
If Jesus matters to me, then
what matters to Jesus will
matter to me and to my
children. The Church matters
to Jesus. Jesus staked his life
on it. Through his death and
resurrection, his invitation to
me is to raise my children to
follow Jesus, through his
Church, on the bold adventure
of bringing the gospel
message of grace to the world.

Well, the time has come to
say "see you later" to my brothers and sisters in Christ here at St. John. I have been
blessed by so many of you that have made me smile or
laugh here over the last three years as Youth & Family Director.
As a staff member at St. John, I experienced more than just a workplace. I was
blessed to live in relationship with youth and adults alike
that give St. John its soul. I would just like to say that there are so many good and
faithful people here, both past and present, that have
made the job truly enjoyable, a formative chapter in my book of life. This resulted in
laughter, smiles, lock-ins, cookies, and "Chad packets"
with youth that have taught me as much, if not more, than I taught them. The
times of transition, the times of sadness, and times with
tears have made each of us stronger as we experienced the grace of God together.
The experiences at camp; falling off logs, launching
youth into the air on an unbalanced teeter totter, smuggling in treats, bugs,
sinking canoes, and having all of us around a campfire are
memories I won't forget.
I would like to put out a special thank you to Deb
Olsen for the years of leader-ship and service through Youth Ministry, the Congrega-
tional Council for their support
and trust in blessing me with the opportunity to build the
position, and all of you, the congregation for allowing me
to grow with your children on their faith journey. Thank you for your support, your trust,
and your willingness to make bringing the gospel to our
youth a priority.
We have been through all of the highs and lows together
from births to deaths, from separation to engagements,
from good-bye’s to hello's. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the opportunity
to take this journey together. It was a special and formative
time in my life that will make me a better pastor.
Professionally, you have all
been instrumental in my education as I prepare to serve Christ's Church as a
pastor. I appreciate all of you walking with me on my
faith journey as I continue to discern my sense of call. It is rare in today's world to
experience so much support and affirmation; yet, this is
the norm for me at St. John. Thank you and I pray for continued support of my
successor.
You also don’t often get to
see a project the whole way through. I feel honored to have been given the privilege
to see this project blossom over the last 3 years. From
the initial creation of the po-sition, all the way to handing it over to the new Youth
Director.
St. John is a special place with special people. I am
excited for my year of internship at Calvary and
the challenges that will come with it. I’m equally as excited for my final year of seminary
study. Special thanks go to the youth of St. John.
Together we have grown in our faith, did lots of laughing, great learning, and made
memories that will last a life time. I am so thankful to
each of these great young people and proud to watch them grow into adults. May
Christ richly bless each of you. I pray you find success
in all of your endeavors.
I am not sure what the future will bring; but, I am sure that
it will involve many cups of coffee at Crystal Coffee, lots
of sermon writing, lots of prayer, and well wishes to each of you, my St. John
family.
In Grateful Appreciation,
Chad

June Congregation Council Recap
The two new projectors were purchased and installed using $1,000 from the funds raised from Helping Hands Bake and
Craft sale last December. Any remaining charges will be taken from the Capital Campaign fund.
Rev. Erik and Tauna Roth, missionaries in Japan, will be with St. John on Sunday, August 7. Three weeks prior to their
visit, a special envelope will be available to the congrega-tion for a free will offering to the missionaries.
Lawn Mower and Lawn—May need to raise funds for a new
lawn mower and/or budget a lawncare company to maintain
the lawn in the future.
Joan Johansen—After St. John’s second meeting with Joan
Johansen, people who attended said that they would not at-
tend another. As per Joan, the congregation needs 10% of its
members involved in the program for it to work. Council will
be setting up a meeting with Pastor Josh to discuss actions to
be taken.
InReach/OutReach Ministry - looking at people in congre-
gation to be a part of this ministry.
Short-term Planning - need to start first. Will begin letting
the congregation know about this new project and will be
looking for people who would be good for the first meeting.
Youth and Family Ministry position update—Will begin inter-
viewing next week.
Planters in parking lot—Need to get estimates on removal of
planters from Concrete Contractors.
John Miller offered to check with a local business owner on
maintaining our Memorial Garden.
Communique July 2016
St. John is proud of the work
we are doing in the church and
in the world. To celebrate and
give thanks for each other, our
time, talent, and treasures,
we will be Spotlighting each
Ministry over the course of the
year. Please pray for these
Ministries and consider joining
their Missions.
The family of St. John Lutheran
Church has embraced the Green
Bay Mobilepack for Feed My
Starving Children(FMSC) as one
of its mission outreaches. We
became part of this outreach in
2011 when we partnered with
First English Lutheran Church in
Appleton. In 2013, the first
Green Bay Mobilepack was held
at the Green Bay Community
Church. The Green Bay
Mobilepack has grown from four
partner churches in 2013 to
eleven partner churches in 2016.
In 2013, 1,338 volunteers packed
272,160 meals. In 2015, 2,379
volunteers packed 536,544 meals.
This year our goal again is to
pack a half million meals. When
we became part of this mission,
over 18,000 children were dying
each day of starvation. At this
time, over 6,200 children die
each day of starvation. Prayer is
top priority for this mission.
Please pray that all children will
be nourished each day.
Feed My Starving Children is a
Christian non-profit organization
committed to feeding God’s
children hungry in body and
spirit. Living in the USA, we are
fortunate to have safety nets for
the hungry through government
agencies and food pantries.
This is not the case in the
countries served by FMSC.
Mothers often make “mud
biscuits” to feed their children.
They are made of mud and
water with a little sugar, if avail-
able, and then dried in the sun.
Though they provide no real
nourishment, the children’s
stomachs feel full so they do
not have the severe pain of mal-
nutrition. Each meal that is
packed costs only 22 cents.
Children that receive these
meals only receive one a day.
Individual fundraisers are held
by all partner churches. The
St. John FMSC ministry sold jars
this year with ingredients for
M&M cookies. After baking the
cookies, please use the jar to
place your change – or dollars!
“You can change a life with
your change!” Rather than just
putting in leftover change,
please consider giving up
something in order to put that
extra money into the jar along
with a prayer. An idea would
be to have a glass of water
instead of a soda, or maybe
going without a special treat
such as a candy bar. By doing
so, you will be providing life for
a starving child.
Together, the eleven partner
churches for the Green Bay
Mobilepack sponsors a 5K
Charity Walk/Run. This year
the Walk/Run will be held on
Saturday, September 10. Entry
forms are available in the tray
above “Manna” (our M&M guy).
You can also register at
GBCC.me/5Krun. If you are not
able to walk or run, please con-
sider a donation to this event.
We are also looking for corpo-
rate sponsors! Please pray for
this event.
The 2016 Green Bay Moiblepack
for Feed My Starving Children
will be held on October 3-6
this year at Green Bay Commu-
nity Church. Because we are a
partner church, we are able to
participate in early registration.
Our confirmation students are
also given priority to be part of
the youth night. Info on how to
volunteer will be available in
August. Children 5 and older
and all adults can volunteer.
There are jobs for everyone –
putting labels on the food bags,
which can be done while sitting,
packing the ingredients, sealing
the bags; and, for those that like
physical work, preparing the
shipment boxes and keeping all
the food bins full. Prayers are
offered over the packed boxes
after each session that they will
arrive safely to the children.
Each volunteer packs approxi-
mately $50 worth of ingredients.
In order to pay for the food,
donations are needed and very
much appreciated. Our church
has been generous in supporting
this mission. Money can be
placed in “Manna” at any time
or in the offering. We are also
saving pop tabs. There is a bin
for those on the counter in the
narthex. Corporate sponsors are
needed for this event.

WOMEN OF THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN AMERICA
Our Purpose As a community of women created in the image of God,
called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry
and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.
Our Mission To mobilize women to act boldly
on their faith in Jesus Christ.
AN EVENT FOR ALL WOMEN IN ELCA CHURCHES
The Tenth Triennial Gathering
July 13-16, 2017 Minneapolis, MN
Registration opens September 6, 2016
Cost: $310 before January 6, 2017: $350 after
See www.welca.org for information as it becomes available..
This event is similar to the National Youth Gathering, but for women. It is held every three years in different locations. Minneapolis is the closest it has been in years. Wondering if this is something for you to consider? Ask St. John members who have attended in the past: Nancy Anderson, Carol Pearson, Julie Johnson, Jackie Burkat. One verse reflecting the Triennial theme, ”All Anew,” Psalm 104:30: “Lord, send forth your spirit…and renew the face of the earth,” calls on God to send the Holy Spirit to renew not just God’s people, not just God’s church—but all God’s earth, the creation that God called good.
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY Tuesday, July 14, 2016 6:30-8:30 p.m.
2866 Pioneer Drive (Jackie Burkat’s home)
The second session in a three-part series, “The Heart of the Matter: Conflict, Forgiveness, and Reconciliation,” is titled “Seeking God.” “When we feel that God is distant, God is most present.” (GATHER July/August 2016) Our study is in GATHER Magazine. To sub-scribe, go to www.gathermagazine.org or call 844-409-0576. Ask Jackie Burkat if you would like to see a copy. Call her at 592-1217 if you have questions. Join us at any time! Come even if you don't subscribe to GATHER.

And still others are young adults, engaging in a life-changing, year-long experience through the Young Adults in Global Mission.
(Article from www.elca.org on Global Church Sponsorship)
We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work.
Over 240 ELCA missionaries serve in more than 40 coun-tries around the world, invited by global church partners to work together hand-in-hand. Some are doctors in rural areas. Others teach children where there are few opportu-
No matter where or how they serve, every one of these missionaries needs your prayers, support and gifts to succeed in their work. Your gift connects you directly to these missionaries. You make their life-changing ministry happen.
Please join us in God’s amaz-ing work. Help grow the Lutheran church around the world.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
“So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them.” Genesis 1:27
We are killing ourselves. We believe that all people are created in God’s image. All of
humanity bears a family resemblance. Those murdered in Orlando were not abstract
“others,” they are us. But somehow, in the mind of a deeply disturbed gunman, the LGBTQ
community was severed from our common humanity. This separation led to the death of
49 and the wounding of 54 of us.
We live in an increasingly divided and polarized society. Too often we sort ourselves into like
-minded groups and sort others out. It is a short distance from division to demonization.
Yesterday, we witnessed the tragic consequences of this.
There is another way. In Christ God has reconciled the world to God’s self. Jesus lived among
us sharing our humanity. Jesus died for us to restore our humanity. God invites us into this
reconciling work. This must be our witness as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
The perpetrator of this hate crime did not come out of nowhere. He was shaped by our culture
of division, which itself has been misshapen by the manipulation of our fears. That is not who
we are. St. Paul wrote, “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has
passed away; see, everything has become new. All this is from God, who reconciled us to
himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God
was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrust-
ing the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ.” (II Corinthians
5:17-20)
Our work begins now. We need to examine ourselves, individually and as a church, to
acknowledge the ways we have divided and have been divided. We must stand with people
who have been “othered”. We must speak peace and reconciliation into the cacophony of
hatred and division. We must live the truth that all people are created in God’s image.
This morning your churchwide staff came together to mourn and to pray. We prayed for those
killed in Orlando and remembered the Charleston Nine killed only a year ago. We prayed for
the family of the shooter, for our LGBTQ brothers and sisters and for our Muslim brothers and
sisters who now face the threat of retaliation. And we prayed that the Prince of Peace will
bring us to the day when we stop killing ourselves.
Your sister in Christ,
Elizabeth A. Eaton
