Topic: Spiritual Sight

When your eye is sound, your whole body is full of light; but when it is unsound, the body is full of darkness (Luke 11:34).

Everything is relative to sight or the lack of it. Christ often used sight as a synonym for wisdom and understanding, referring to those religious leaders who lacked it as blind guides leading the blind.

In fact, within six to eight weeks of birth a baby sees clearly. Anything less than this is abnormal. First children see, and then they learn about what they have seen. They see before they can sit up, crawl, or say their first word

"Unless one is born anew, he cannot see"

In both the natural and the spiritual, you must be born before you can see. An infant born into the natural realm sees with natural eyes, and one born of the Spirit sees with spiritual eyes.

"While we look not at the things, which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:18)

How do we look at things that are not seen? What kind of ambiguous language is this?

Spiritual sight is necessary for spiritual understanding.

"The natural man doesn't receive the things of God's Spirit, for they are foolishness to him, and he can't know them, because they are spiritually discerned" (1 Corinthians 2:14).

Importance:

1. Spiritual Sight will keep a Disciple from Falling

Explanation: Just as physical vision keeps you from falling – so spiritual vision will also keep you out of the many pitfalls of life.

A godly vision is right for the times, right for the church, and right for the people. A godly vision promotes faith rather than fear. A godly vision motivates people to action. A godly vision requires risk-taking. A godly vision glorifies God, not people. Bob Logan

People perish because of lack of vision – sight

A person without physical sight cannot effectively lead. Likewise, one who is spiritually blind yet leads will in all probability cause both suffer and possibly perish.

2. Spiritual Sight will enable a Disciple to focus correctly

Luke 6:39-42

A speck is a small discoloration or spot especially from stain or decay

The captain of the Titanic refused to believe the ship was in trouble till water was ankle deep in the mail room. Only then was it apparent the multi-layered hull had been pierced and the unsinkable ship was going to sink. We are vessels, on a journey to a destination

Spiritual Sight will also enable a Disciple to look inwardly as God does and see issues in our lives

3. Spiritual Sight will enable a Disciple to admit and remove the plank from his/her own eye

See (inwardly) & admit your own issues (planks)

You cannot see to help others while hiding or trying to ignore issues in your own life.

4. Spiritual Sight will enable a Disciple to remove a speck from a brother or sister’s eye.

Spiritual Sight enables you to help others to see and be useful to the kingdom of God.
