Why have a Youth Mentor Program?• Because it is a good idea!• Pay back to the community!• To help America’s Youth!• To develop IT staff internally!• To become the foundation of your

Intern Program.

Where to have a Youth MentorProgram?Youth Mentor Programs can meet any-where! In a Church, Synagog, MasonicTemple, or at your company’s facilities!

If it is your goal to have the graduatingyouth of your Youth Mentor Programbecome part of your Corporate IT InternProgram then it is suggested that you usecompany’s facilities.

Since most employees meet from 9 to 5,the majority of your facilities are not uti-lized in the evening. Therefore, schedul-ing conferences rooms, trainingfacilities, audio visual equipment, etc.will not be a problem!

When do we meet?Successful Venturing Crews meetweekly.

Some have suggested that Crews shouldmeet every other week or once a month. However, if a youth and/or adult has ascheduling conflict on that night it couldbe up to 60 or 90 days before they getback into sync with the unit. Therefore, many youth drop out of units that do notmeet weekly.

We are suggesting that the meetings beheld on Tuesday Evenings from 7:30 to9:30p.m. It is our goal to start a Ventur-ing IT Cluster. If all units meet on thesame night of the week at the same time, then it is easier to schedule ClusterEvents.

Where do I find Adults? The best place to find Adults is youremployees! Send out a flyer or E-Mail toall your staff and see who wants to par-ticipate? You will be amazed how manyadults want to help our youth!

The Institutional Representative andAdvisor must be chosen with the greatestof scrutiny! They must be someone thatwill be around for years and have anunwavering commitment!

What Adults Do I need? and whatis the time commitment!

Institutional Repr esentative

This is a corporate big wig. They arethe go-between the company and itsfacilities. They are the person thatmakes the resources available to theprogram. They also sign the charterand speaks on behalf of the company. The Institutional Representativeattends about one crew meeting aquarter and meets with the BSA pro-fessional staff once a year to sign thecharter. The Institutional Representa-tive meets “Shortly” with the Commit-tee Chairman as needed.

Committee Chairman

Chairs the Crew Committee and has acommittee meeting once a month.Helps develop the Crew program. TheCommittee Chairman attends CrewMeetings about once a quarter.

Committee Members

Committee Members attend themonthly committee meetings andhelps develop the Crew program.Doesn’t need to attend the Crew meet-ings.

Advisor

Is a voting member of the Committee.Acts as the Committee Chairmanwhen the Chairman is not able to makea meeting. Attends all Crew Meetings,Committee Meetings, and Activities.

Associate Advisors

Where do I find Youth? The first place you find youth isfrom your employee’s. Ask them iftheir children would be interested inparticipating. If yes, ask if theywould be willing to participate.

Partners with the local school sys-tems. You inform the GuidancesCouncilors about your program. They intern guide interested youthto your program. Church, Synagog,Lyons Club, Masons,...

Word of mouth! If you have a strongprogram the youth will find out!

What are the goals of a YouthMentor Program?• Gain practical experience in

technology, special interest, lead-ership, or skill...

• Engage in a program of activitiescentered on the six experienceareas (Leadership, Service,Social Interaction, Fitness, andthe Outdoors) to encourage thedevelopment of the whole per-son.

• Experience positive leaders andbe given opportunities to take onleadership roles

• Have a chance to learn and growin a supportive, caring, and funenvironment

• Learn to make ethical choicesover their lifetime by instillingthe values in the Venturing Oathand Code.

• Experience a program that is funand full of challenge and adven-ture

• Become a skilled training andprogram resource for Cub Scoutsand Boy Scouts and other groups.

• Acquire skills in the areas of highadventure, sports, arts and hob-bies, youth ministries, or SeaScouting.

• Experience positive leadershipfrom adult and youth leaders andbe given opportunities to take onleadership roles.

• Have a chance to learn and grow in asupportive, caring, and fun environ-ment.

Dir ect and Indirect Benefits ofParticipationNetworking with business and educa-tion. Training future employees. Keep-ing students in school. Promoting highereducation. Improving the awareness andimage of technical opportunities whilesupporting the community.

What is a Cluster?Groups with similar programs can part-ner with one-an-other to develop inter-Crew activities. They can shareresources. They can help new Advisors.Provide training. etc...

Why a Uniform?Teenagers are influenced by their peers. If a poor youth wears the same clothes toevery function while a rich youth wearspolo ponies it will cause friction. More-over, you as an Advisor knows what toexpect on an outing!

Why Boy Scouts?By partnering with Boy Scouts of Amer-ica co-educational Venturing Divisionyou will have access to:

• Training Programs• Training Facilities• Multi-1,000+ acre Campgrounds• Cabins• Liability Insurance• Knowledgable Professional Staff• People who have been there done

that!
