2012 Summer Camp Summary

2012 marks the 14th year of free summer camps sponsored by Charleston County Human Services Commission. The purpose of these camps were to provide positive educational activities for children to offset expensive camps averaging $90-$125 per week for low income families. The camps feature our Youth Leadership Program curriculum for character education but also promote budgeting, employment and energy conservation. Because CCHSC serves the Tri-county area, the camp was scheduled to be in Berkeley County and rotate each year. Parents in Charleston were disappointed that we would not have a camp in their county. Due to the generosity of an anonymous donor, a $10,000 gift was donated to the agency for the purpose of hosting a camp in Charleston County. The three-person Youth Leadership staff rose to the challenge by hosting two four-week camps simultaneously. The staff served as site supervisors and the agency hired teachers, parent counselors, youth counselors, drivers, cooks and janitors as temporary staff members to assure that the camps had the correct adult/student ratio and that all facets of the camp ran smoothly. Before camp began, the Youth Leadership staff registered each camp participant in the CSBG program. The camp was enhanced this year with certified teachers to tutor the children in English/language arts, math and physical education. Each week, campers were taken on an educational field trip within the Tri-county area. Six high school and college students were hired through Project Pride’s summer youth employment program with help from additional funding earmarked for summer employment through the Community Services Block Grant. A total of 55 students registered in the Berkeley and Charleston County camps and 37 parents attended evening parenting sessions once per week.
