Welcome to St JohnOur vision

To become the youth development programme of choice in Aotearoa; in the outcomes for young people, quality of delivery and connection with the community.

Our mission

Deliver a vibrant leadership and first aid programme, focussed on development and successes of young people which enhances health and wellbeing in our community.

The Youth programme is for all young people from 6 to 18 years. Among the skills our penguins and cadets develop, there are fantastic opportunities to meet new people, experience new things and of course, have fun!

We encourage leadership and development by promoting community service, learning life skills and providing real leadership opportunities and training.

During your time with St John we want you to develop your skills in caring for people and your ability to deal with emergency situations. We would like you to develop your sense of responsibility and to belong to an organisation that plays an important role in New Zealand.

Make sure that you participate, not only in the range of activities offered by St John Youth, but also in the running of your division and the joint activities offered in your district. You will quickly find that the more you get involved, the more you will get out of your experience in Youth.

We hope you will take advantage of all the opportunities available to you, as it will help you face the many challenges that life holds in the future.

Welcome to the St John family.

Wearing your uniformYou should wear your uniform smartly, correctly and with pride because you are representing St John. It is important that you follow the uniform rules so that St John can maintain its public image. When you wear any sort of St John clothing you are representing St John and anything you do or say is a reflection on the organisation.

All members must be appropriately and neatly dressed and groomed for the work they are expected to perform. For patient safety and comfort, all members must observe a high level of personal hygiene. The following are some examples to guide members in their grooming, but is not a complete list:

Hair

All youth members must keep their hair clean, neat and tidy. For frontline operational and hygiene reasons, hair longer than below collar length must be neatly tied back. Cadets must be cleanly shaven.

Nails

Nails are to be kept to a minimum length and in good condition. If nail polish is worn it is to be a neutral colour.

Jewellery

Only minimal jewellery is acceptable. You may only wear one small plain stud earring per earlobe, and no other visible face/body piercing or jewellery is permitted. Necklaces should not be visible above the neckline.

What can be accredited to my hours?

Any voluntary activity that benefits the people, services or environment in your community without any personal gain.

What does personal gain mean?

• getting paid for your service • acquiring possessions through your service • receiving benefits from your service • being provided with returned services • activities that contribute to gaining additional St John achievements (e.g.

proficiency badges, qualifications, acquiring NCO rank, VIP points..) • gaining NCEA credits • activities in your division that are part of your role (e.g. Sergeant instructing

at your own division).

Examples of voluntary activities in your community:

• charity work with community organisations • assisting with fundraising campaigns • helping out with community projects and conservation work • giving assistance to rest homes and hospitals • community initiatives in your school or Youth council • administration (libraries, community newsletters, planning..) • coaching others (sports, the arts, skills..) • educating others (after school peer tutoring..) • mentoring others (help lines, after school peer support..) • supervising others (school road patrol, life saving..).

Examples of volunteering in St John Youth: *

Community service Youth Handbook | 27

Page 28: YOUTH HANDBOOK NAME DIVISION · 2018. 8. 21. · Portfolio Holders National Cadet of the Year Regional Youth Support My division / Youth structure Youth Handbook | 7. Youth awards

• helping fundraising campaign leading up to and during Annual Appeal week • attending operational events alongside Events personnel • promoting St John and our Youth programmes at community events • working bees at local St John stations and complexes • volunteering at regional office (uniform sorting, mailouts, administration).

* Note this does not include activities that contribute to achieving badges, qualifications or NCO rank.

Important to note

Assisting members of your family does not constitute community service, i.e. babysitting siblings (unless parents are attending a community event, e.g. community group meeting), cooking dinner for the family, housework, washing the car, mowing the lawns, walking the dog, helping out on the farm. These are all activities which are part of being a family member and looking after your own.

Summary of community service in action:

Mhelping out a neighbour with household maintenance N if they pay you or return the favour with their service

N attending your youth division N attending your youth division to instruct a group Massisting your division with fundraising

N attending youth competitions as a competitor Mattending youth competitions as a patient or marshall (i.e. helping out)
