08/14/18 YOUTH AND FAMILY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MINUTES August 14, 2018 In Attendance Councilwoman Demetrus Coonrod, Committee Chair, called the meeting to order at 4:06 p.m. in the Council Assembly Room. A quorum was present, including Council Chairman Ken Smith, Council Vice-Chairman Erskine Oglesby and Council members Carol Berz, Anthony Byrd, Russell Gilbert, Chip Henderson, Darrin Ledford and Jerry Mitchell. Also present were Phil Noblett, Deputy City Attorney, and Keren Campbell, Council Support Specialist. Others in Attendance YFD: Lurone Jennings (Administrator), Jason McKinney (Deputy Administrator of Education), Greta Hayes (Director of Recreation) Approval of Minutes On motion of Councilman Gilbert and seconded by Councilman Ledford, the minutes from the last meeting (July 10, 2018) were approved as published. YFD Summer Programs Report Mr. Jennings gave an overview of the Summer Camp. He introduced Mr. McKinney who gave a PowerPoint presentation that included the following: • Different Divisions and their purpose • Office of Family Empowerment • Summer Cam • Updates • Teen Empowerment • Summer Sports • Summer education • Summer fun Ms. Hayes gave additional detailed information on what the children were offered day in and day out. A discussion ensued in which Councilman Henderson had questions regarding the following: • Integration of the educational piece • Slide component • Notification process for suspended children • Navy week • Tracking process for the reading program Councilwoman Coonrod expressed her gratitude to what was being done for the children during the summer camp. Upon no further questions or comments, the issue was closed. Adjournment There being no further business, Councilwoman Coonrod adjourned the meeting at 4:25 p.m. Attachment: Slide Presentation Handout
