Saying goodbye to the room in the home where my heart isI was fine – totally fine – about leaving the house for the last time. The removal van had already left and I was just locking up.

But I couldn’t go without a last look at our old bedroom. I wanted to remember the first night me and my late husband David had collapsed, exhausted, onto a mattress on the floor, thrilled to be in our first place together.

We’d chattered excitedly

about our new home, hugging ourselves at our brilliant luck, full of wild ideas – and absolutely no cash.

A year later, lying in bed – now with a headboard and legs – I woke up at 1am and realised those pains probably weren’t wind. “Dave,” I prodded my snoring husband, “I think I’m about to have a baby.”

“I hope you’re not going to use language like that when this baby is born,” I snickered.

Five days later, it was time to leave the hospital with our baby daughter Jesse. I was already institutionalised and scared to go home, but the moment I was back in our bedroom, putting Jesse in her Moses basket, I felt safe again.

The bedroom was to be my

I didn’t know it then, but those were to be the best months of my life. Cocooned from the world, in the love-filled confusion of new parenthood, never thinking beyond the next feed.

My last memory of David in

our bedroom is me standing by the door, wondering whether to wake him up before taking 15-month-old Jesse to nursery on the way to work.

eighteen hours later, I woke up in the same bed, fully-clothed, and looked out of the window. In the dark garden below, a single candle burned on the table among the detritus of unfinished food and drinks left by all the friends and family who had gathered after

David’s death earlier that day in a motorbike accident.

I don’t know why but I just felt comforted by that flickering candle, like David was lost and maybe if he saw the candle he could find us again.
