Fuel Tanks and GSM Fuel Monitoring Telemetry

Watkins Hire is the UK’s only specialist temperature control rental solutions company to have GSM fuel telemetry fi tted to its entire fl eet of ADR rated bunded fuel tanks from 1000 litres.

This system measures fuel levels throughout the length of the hire requirement. The levels are monitored at our head offi ce and contact is made with the site when fuel deliveries are required.

Watkins Hire can then utilise its fuel suppliers to make the delivery and ensure that the end client has no downtime due to fuel running out and no unnecessary nuisance breakdown call out charges.

BK Gas Meter Elster’s range of Diaphragm Gas Meters scale from the everyday domestic BK-G4 Gas Meter that you would find in most households, right up to the BKG100 Meter that the Utility Companies use on incoming supplies to large buildings. These Meters are MID approved giving them the ability to be used on Billing applications and also have extraordinary flow performance down to the smallest amount of gas.

The smaller BK-G Meters from 20 - 50mm all use a union connection, which are supplied alongside each Meter. from 65mm to 100mm a PN16 Flanged connection is supplied. All of the Diaphragm Meters are connected through the U shape design with inlets on top of the Meter.

Each BK-G Gas Meter has a mechanical index for the meter reading itself but they can also be paired up with an IN-Z61 Pulse Transmitter in order to send data remotely. Higher specification of communication can also be offered with M-Bus outputs and also Digital readouts for easier Meter reading. There is also a model that offers temperature compensation for the highest accuracy of monitoring.

The standard use for this range is to monitor Natural Gas supplies but these meters can also be used with LPG gas systems as well. The maximum operating pressure of gas that can be monitored is 500mbar.

QA Gas MeterThe QA Quantometers are Turbine Gas Meters are manufactured by Elster. Their size range starts at 25mm and runs up to 150mm. The smaller meters from 25 to 40mm are all supplied with a BSP Male Threaded connection with unions. Then from 50mm and above, all Meters are supplied as standard with a PN16 Flanged connection with a Wafer type design. Fixing Bolts are supplied as standard with each QA Gas Meter. Their measuring principle is all down to the Turbine Wheel which spins in proportion to the volume of Gas that has passed through the Meter.

This reading is displayed as standard on a 7 Digit Mechanical Index which can be rotated for an easier visual reading of the data when using the Meter in either horizontal or vertical lengths of pipework. A Low Frequency Pulse Output is also supplied as standard for transmitting data to a remote reading service or Building Management System. As an option, a Digital Readout can be offered to replace the Mechanical Index. The QAe head fits in the same position and uses a one-button navigation in order to show more data such as live flow rate and daily volumes. The QAe also provides further options of communication output with an M-Bus connection available.

The versatility of the QA Meters is shown in their high measuring ranges and pressure tolerances twinned with their compact design and robust construction. The combination of all of these points gives the QA Meters suitability to be used on a wide variety of Gas installations, including supplies that use Natural Gas, Liquefied Petroleum Gas and Manufactured Gases. Filtration is advised in order to protect the Turbine Wheel from harmful particles that could cause potential damage and obstruction to the operation of the QA Meters. Top Hat Commissioning Filters are available alongside more permanent Pad style Gas Filters.

Sontex 749 Heat MeterThe Superstatc 749 range of Meters is one the most recent additions to the Superstatic family. Through the integration of a sleek new design, compact sizing and the fluid oscillation principle, the 749 has been extensively used throughout the UK and indeed globally for a multitude of different applications including metering in built into HIUs, Domestic Apartment installations and also Solar Thermal applications just to name a few. The 749 meters can be programmed to work with glycol and anitfreeze solutions whilst conforming to MID Class 2 Approval. Various communication outputs are also available including pulse, M-Bus, Radio and now Wireless M-Bus as well.

The Superstatic 749 meters are all Battery Powered as standard with options of 6 Year and 12 Year life spans and are fully replaceable without having to install a new meter. The 749 meter range is available as a QP0.6 15mm, QP1.5 15mm, QP1.5 20mm and QP2.5 20mm. The QP Rating mentioned is the nominal flow rate in m3/hr that each meter size can measure up to.

The compact design of the 749 range of Meters includes one of the temperature sensors being fitted to the meter body itself to save on space and installation requirements. Another feature of the design to save space is the display being mounted on the meter body as standard. A wall bracket is supplied should the display need to be separated from the flow part so it can be mounted to a wall nearby.

Sontex 449 Heat MeterBy adopting a compact design for domestic applications, the Superstatic 449 offers the same great performance from the Superstatic 440 in a smaller design. This meter enjoys the same flexibility on communication modules and power supplies and is supplied with the same MID Class 2 Approval. The Superstatic 449 can also be programmed to suit glycol and antifreeze applications as it uses the Fluid Oscillation measuring principle.

The design of Integrator is similar to the Supercal 531 which means there is the same options available in terms of power supply and communication modules. The meter can be supplied in a Mains 230vac, 24vac or 24vdc version or a D-Cell Battery can be fitted to provide an internal power supply for a more remote installation.

One main difference between the Superstatic 449 and its larger counterpart is that one of the temperature sensors is built into the meter body itself, removing some of the usual installation required and saving space as well. This is all part of the design for a more compact meter style. The Integrator for the 449 meter is mounted on the meter body as standard, with the option of using the same bracket to mount the meter directly to a wall or on a DIN rail.

The 449 Meter is available as a QP1.5 15mm, QP1.5 20mm and QP2.5 20mm Heat Meter model and size. The QP Rating mentioned is the nominal flow rate in m3/hr that each meter size can measure up to.

Sontex 440 Heat MeterThe Superstatic 440 Heat Meter is the main range from Sontex, covering all size requirements. By using Fluid Oscillation for flow measurement it provides high accuracy heating and cooling measurement . The measuring principle is also unique to the Sontex brand and allows the meter to operate safely when used alongside glycol solutions whilst still retaining the accuracy and MID Class 2 Approval. The Superstatic 440 meters have been used extensively in the UK on District Heating Schemes and also on Commercial RHI Installations for many years.

Going from the smallest models at QP1.0 15mm up to QP10 40mm a threaded BSP Male connection is provided and then from QP15 50mm onwards a Flanged PN16 connection is standardised. An option of Flanged PN16 connection is also available for the QP3.5, QP6 and QP10 Models as well. The QP Rating mentioned is the nominal flow rate in m3/hr that each meter size can measure up to.

The Superstatic 440 is supplied alongside the Supercal 531 Integrator and a pair of temperature sensors and pockets. Unions are also supplied where necessary for the smaller sizes. The Supercal 531 is where you will find high flexibility of both power supply and communication modules to suit any application and requirement. The meters can be supplied with a D-Cell Battery to meet the need for remote installation. Alongside the Battery option, a Mains Powered version can be supplied with voltage requirements of 230vac, 24vac or 24vdc.

JS Smart+ Water MeterOne of the most popular ranges of Meters from Apator PoWogaz, the JS Smart+ Domestic Cold Water Meters are available in a 15 or 20mm connection size to suit all smaller and domestic applications. These Meters can be mounted in either a horizontal or vertical position thanks to the Single Jet measuring style which can work in either plane of direction. Unions are supplied with each meter giving a BSP Male thread connection.

The JS Meters are suitable for cold water up to 30°C and are MID approved for Billing applications. They are also WRAS approved which makes them safe for Potable Drinking Water applications throughout the UK.

The latest design for the JS can now have a retrofittable pulsed output for a ratio of 1 litre per pulse.. This allows the meters to be used as part of a remote data collection network. Alongside the Pulsed Output, an M-Bus version is also available offering the use of this meter in a wired or wireless M-Bus network.

The JS Models are all of a Dry Dial design so the internal dial mechanisms will not be directly worn down by contact with water. Only the turbine impeller makes direct contact with the water. The dial itself can be rotated to make reading the meters easier visually.

MWN Water MeterThe MWN Woltmann Cold Water Meters are commercial sized meters for larger applications. Their design allows for bulk flows of water to be monitored in either a horizontal or vertical installation position. The maximum operating temperature is 30°C for the MWN when used on Cold Water applications. In recent years the MWN has seen improvements to its calibration which means it can measure the flow of water over a wider range of flow rates.

The MWN Meters are all MID approved for Billing requirements and also hold the WRAS approval making them safe to use on Potable Drinking Water installations.

All of the MWN Meters have a PN16 Flanged connection as standard from 40mm right up to 300mm. There is the option of a BSP Union connection for the 50mm though, a unique design of Woltmann meter with a 2” BSP Male connection.

Pulsed versions of the MWNs are available in the form of MWN-NK Models which include a reed switch and cable to wire to. The output ratios vary between 10 litres per pulse and 100 litres per pulse as the sizes of meter are increased but all models can be changed to meet ratio requirements from 10 litres per pulse up to 1000 litres per pulse. Just like the JS and JSC ranges from PoWogaz, an M-Bus output is also available giving the MWN the suitability to be used on either a wired or wireless M-Bus network.


HZ3 Oil MeterThe HZ3 from Braun is an Oil Meter designed for small sized systems. Mediums of Extra Light Fuel or Diesel Fuel can be measured through the HZ3 as standard. This Meter can be installed on both Oil Based Central Heating and also Suction systems with a single pipe for boilers or burners ranging from 1.65 kW up to 265 kW. The connection on the meter is a 1/4” internal thread with the inlet and outlet on the bottom of the Meter itself.

The dial on the HZ3 has a revolution counter which will make a full rotation when 1 Litre of Oil is measured through the Meter and in turn will increase the reading on the index dials that show the totalised volume. This large display is easy to read and is part of the robust design in order to provide a reliable Meter.

Also available is the larger model, the HZ5. This allows the measurement of Oil supplies on slightly larger installations with burners and boilers working between 7 kW to 400 kW. The HZ5 Meters are supplied with 1/8” internal thread connections. This Meter’s index is standard roller counters showing a reading to 0.01 Litres.

Pulsed versions of each Meter are available that provide remote communication and easier Meter reading to a Building Management System or other local data logging facility. The HZ3RR and HZ5RR are virtually the same design with the addition of a pulse block onto each Meter. A visual reading can still be taken from these models as well.

Prowirl D 200 Steam MeterThe compact Prowirl D 200 from Endress and Hauser has the benefit of a Wafer Pattern connection across its range of 15-150mm diameter models. Designed to use the Vortex measuring principle as utilised throughout the Prowirl portfolio, this Meter is primarily specified for monitoring Steam applications. However, the principle will also work accurately when monitoring applications involving other Gases and Liquids.

Differential pressure is recorded as the flow passes through the Meter body and creates Vortexes. This Pressure is than conerted into electrical signals and processed by the Meter display in order to proportion a flow volume that has passed. The LCD can either be mounted on the body of the Meter itself as a compact solution or a remote mounting of the display is also possible for an easier visual reading. A power supply of 24vdc is required for the display to operate.

The Prowirl D 200 is supplied as standard with 4-20ma Analogue and Pulsed Outputs that can be set up through the interface on the LCD itself. Using the navigation buttons the settings can be controlled and also further Data Logging can be viewed. An optional communication facility of Profibus is also available if required for certain installations.

The Wafer Pattern design allows for a shorter face to face dimension of the Meter itself and it can be supplied in a variety of flange pressure ratings from PN10 up to PN40 depending on the application specifics.

Introducing WASPS WASPS has been introduced to assist all clients with production critical steam boiler plant located across multiple sites. With all steam boilers being subject to an annual insurance inspection, this means downtime for the boiler. In many cases a temporary rental boiler is required to cover these shutdowns to prevent downtime in production.

Following a comprehensive site survey (one off charge for survey applies but is refunded if a WASPS plan is taken out), a WASPS plan gives you access to a specified ring fenced boiler package for the duration of the contract period (minimum 12 months) with an agreed number of transport movements and commissioning charges included for one fixed monthly fee to cover all sites.

This guarantees availability of a suitable steam boiler package to cover all annual inspection shutdowns so that they can be programmed to take place when production demands are at the lowest points throughout the year. The package would also be available to cover any emergency requirements when not in use on a site. Our three levels of plan can be tailored to your own individual requirements to ensure that you are fully covered in the event of an emergency. Each level of plan will have a unique reference number which is quoted at the time of any emergency call off ensuring a timely response and reducing any downtime to a minimum.

Containerised Steam Boilers Our containerised steam boilers are housed in 6 metre or 12 metre containers. 450-2000 kg/hr units in 6 metre boxes, above 2000kg/hr in 12 metre boxes.

The plant rooms are fully self contained and include distribution board, integral lighting, hotwell tank, blowdown vessel, water softeners, and single chemical dosing set. Our boilers are prepared for emergency breakdowns, planned shut downs for repairs, maintenance or upgrade, seasonal capacity requirements to handle peak loads and boiler replacement programs.

Trailerised Steam Boilers Our trailerised steam boilers are fitted to trailers with a typical length of 14.6m. An advantage that these boilers offer over containerised units is boilers under 2800 kg/hr feature integral fuel tanks.

The plant rooms are fully self contained and include distribution board, integral lighting, hotwell tank, blowdown vessel, water softeners, and single chemical dosing set . Static Steam Boilers Watkins Hire has one of the largest fleets of static steam boilers in the UK.

The output capacities range from typically 8,000 kg/hr upto 15,500 kg/hr with operating pressures of up to17 barG. They are normally available with dual-fuel burners. These are most suited to long- term hire and generally are connected to a customers existing, feedwater tank, water treatment plant, chemical dosing system, fuel supply and blowdown vessel.
