Oregon State Parksbeckon from justover the border

It’s not such a long cast to your next fishing vacation at an Oregon State Park. Several parks are just

over the border, offering premier fish-ing, boating, camping and proximity to nearby attractions — all at an afford-able rate and with Oregon’s renowned hospitality.Farewell Bend State Park sits on

Brownlee Reservoir, popular each spring for its large and plentiful catfish, as well as bass and crappie. Just 1½ hours west of Boise on the Idaho-Or-egon border, the park is also a popular base camp for hunters each October and November. Visitors can camp in electrical sites, tent sites or one of two rustic log cabins.Lake Owyhee State Park, a desert

oasis just two hours west of Boise, boasts fantastic fishing each spring, especially smallmouth and large-mouth bass and black crappie. The 54 mile-long reservoir also has channel catfish and is occasionally stocked with redband trout. The park’s campground offers two

boat ramps and plenty of tent and electrical sites. Two cabins offer stun-ning lakeside views. This park is also in the perfect location for the fall hunting season.Eastern Oregon also has several small

state campgrounds along scenic rivers, where fish are plentiful and distractions disappear. Scenic and quiet Cath-erine Creek State Park in the western foothills of the Wallowa Mountains is just 3½ hours northeast of Boise, but it feels a world away. Secluded Minam State Recreation Area on the banks of the Wallowa River is 3½ hour drive northwest from Boise. These primitive campgrounds don’t take reservations; they are perfect for that spur-of-the-

moment fishing trip.Farewell Bend and Lake Owyhee

take reservations up to nine months in

advance, and cabins especially tend to fill quickly. Learn more and make a reservation at oregonstateparks.org

Welcome To Ontario, OregonHome of “America’s Global Village Festival”

Ontario, Oregon is nestled on the lush banks of the Snake River and is proud to be the first

Oregon city you encounter when travel-ing west from the Idaho border. Once you enter the uniquely rugged landscape of the Treasure Valley, you will come to understand why many people never

want to leave. Those who choose to live here understand the meaning and importance of a quality, family oriented lifestyle. Thus, the community reflects the energy, distinction, and diversity of its surrounding geography and residents. And speaking of diversity, this year

the Ontario Chamber of Commerce will host the 19th annual America’s Global Village Festival in Lions Park on June 1st – the first Saturday in June. The

festivities begin at 10:00 a.m. with a multicultural parade through the park followed by a flag ceremony. The Festival celebrates the authentic

cultural villages of African, Basque, German, Hawaiian, Japanese, Mexican, Pioneer, Scottish and Native American cultures. Each village features food, arts and crafts, cultural demonstrations and free youth activities. The main stage will highlight cultural entertain-ment throughout the day.Upon entering the park for the Festi-

val, visitors will be given a souvenir passport. With each visit to the villages, the passport will be stamped. When children have a full passport, they will receive a free prize. Adults who turn in a complete survey will have a chance to win one of two $50 gas cards. While Ontario is the kind of laid-back

town you dream about when you want to get away from the hectic schedule of a busy, big city lifestyle, it also boasts a myriad of recreational activities for all ages, interests and skill levels within driving distance from its downtown area. Here you can enjoy mountain biking, hiking, golfing, camping, sport fishing, bird watching, kayaking, river rafting, horseback riding and much more. Ontario is situated only two hours from four separate ski resorts, in-cluding the world renowned Tamarack

Ski Resort in Cascade, Idaho. You can not only downhill ski to your heart’s content, but also snowmobile, cross country ski and ice skate as well. There are also 61 acres of lush parks within the city if you’re looking for a place to

just relax and enjoy the landscape.Ontario is a town where you will find

the people are genuine, authentic, friend-ly, and down to earth. It is a town with a fascinating history, rich traditions, and a diverse population. It is also a place filled with things to do, places to see, and four distinct and beautiful seasons, so any time you choose to visit will be the perfect time. Aviation Heritage Museum Coffeyville's Aviation Heritage Mu-

seum is dedicated to early aviation and pioneer pilots of the area, the Aviation Heritage Museum features memorabilia from the Coffeyville Air Base, a Funk airplane and Breezy, owned by Joe Funk and donated to the museum, plus many

other displays. Located in Pfister Park, the Aviation Heritage Museum is housed in a 1930's era hangar that was used when the Big Hill Airport was in opera-tion from 1933 to 1960. The airport han-gar was constructed in 1933 as a Works Progress Administration project.Dalton Defenders Museum The Museum, owned and operated by

the non-profit Coffeyville Historical Society, is the realization of a dream of many Coffeyville citizens who understood the importance of collecting items not only relating to the Dalton Raid but also relating to early-day life

in this area. In the Museum, which is just east of the Plaza area, are collec-tions of the following:• Mementos of early-day Coffeyville.• Mementos of Wendell Willkie– who lived and taught school in Coffeyville.• Mementos of Walter Johnson—who lived in Coffeyville during the off-season.• Mementos of the Dalton Raid (including recently located court records of Emmett’s trial).Midland Theater Built in the 1928, the historic Midland

Theater, along with the Alamo building to the west, is currently undergoing restoration. The mission of the Midland Restoration Project is to preserve and restore the Midland Theater and the Alamo Building as a multipurpose facility to accommodate public per-formances, events and activities. The complex will also provide a focal point for further economic development in and revitalization of the downtown core of Coffeyville.Perkins Building The Perkins Building, AKA The

Condon Bank, is one of two banks that the infamous Dalton Gang attempted to rob in 1892. The Perkins Building is the most recognizable building in Cof-feyville. It was built in 1890 and became

home of the Condon Bank, plus other offices and retail stores. Luther Perkins used the design of a similar structure

built in Time Square in New York. The “Flat Iron Building” design referred to its unusual shape and the use of metal on the fascia of the building. Its unique wedge shape, which conformed to the tapering of the plaza block, and its placement at the junction of three streets with a vista in five directions, made it a focal point of town. For information contact the Coffeyville

At Antelope Canyon, you see up close just how talented the hands of nature really

are. Hundreds of years of water has washed and carved through these caves, giving them a mystical quality and inspiring the Navajo to name them a sacred site. Fortunately, for the lovers of geology and beautiful landscapes, they also make a great destination for you.The Upper Antelope reaches a 4,000

feet elevation and walls stretch up 120 feet above the stream bed. This popular slot canyon is located in the heart of the LeChee Chapter of the Navajo Nation and has become a popular destination for sightseers, geology and history lovers and for photographers, hoping to capture some of the area’s natural beauty. It’s a Navajo Tribal Park, accessible by permit only since 1997, ensuring that the pristine beauty of this place remains intact. No climbing is required to get to

the canyon’s entrance and the entire length of the canyon is at ground level. Sunlight radiates down from the openings at the top of the canyon, giving photographers and sightse-ers alike beams or shafts of light to enhance the aura of the place. These are year-round occurrences, but the summer months bring more of them due to the position of the sun in sky during this season.Come experience the canyon in one

of our exclusive guided tours - It’s the only way you can and should see the canyon. Aside from gaining intimate insight into the canyon, our guides keep you safe and dry and help you avoid some of the seasonal pitfalls of the canyon tours. This canyon enjoys the distinction of being the most-visited and most-photographed slot canyon in the Southwest. It lies on Navajo land, near Page, Arizona. Come enjoy the two separate photo-genic sections in the Upper Canyon — or the Crack and in the Lower An-telope Canyon — the Corkscrew. The adventure of a lifetime awaits you!Antelope Canyon Navajo Tours, Dalvin

Known as the “German Capital of Kansas”, Hays has a proud reputation of being a friendly place to enjoy a great Oktoberfest, listen to a good polka band and

enjoy some tasty beer and brats with the local Volga Germans. The Volga German Haus, the German Buffet, Liquid Bread Brewing Company and a tour of the impressive historic native stone German Churches all provide an enjoyable experience of the German Heritage of Ellis County.Visitors are truly amazed when they enter the 100,000 square

foot dome shaped Sternberg Museum of Natural History and see one of the most impressive displays of Cretaceous Period fossils, rocks and educational material. The centerpiece ex-hibit features a full-scale recreation of the sea and land envi-ronments from 70-80 million years ago. Full scale models of plants and animals, some with realistic motion, allow visitors to encounter the world of the Pteranodons and Tyrannosaurs.

Hays is famous for being a frontier town with a colorful history that features the legendary “Wild Bill” Hickok, “Buf-falo Bill” Cody and General George Custer. Hays City was founded in the fall of 1867 when the Union Pacific Railroad reached the military post of Fort Hays along the banks of Big Creek. Because many of the first citizens were railroad work-ers, saloon owners, soldiers and even desperados, the early days of Hays City were wild and dangerous.During several months in 1869, “Wild Bill” Hickok served

as the acting sheriff after several incidents prompted the citi-zens to form a vigilante committee. Many of the outlaws were buried at the original boot hill cemetery, which was located on a hill just north of Hays City. Historic Fort Hays and the Ellis County Historical Museum feature many displays and provide tours for visitors to relive the exciting frontier history. With attractions like the Stone Gallery, Moss-Thorns Gallery

of Art, The Hays Arts Center and 711 Studio, Hays is the arts and entertainment mecca of western Kansas. The crown jewel of the Fort Hays State University entertainment scene is the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. This historic, yet modern facility has a seating capacity of 1,100, and is used for both college and community events.

In her novel, The Cattlemen, Mari Sandoz wrote, “I have tried to take the reader to a high ridge, where all but the nearest arroyos and canyons are hidden,

where the cactus and the sage blend into the greening sweep of the prairie that reaches far into the hazy horizon of May.” Through numerous short stories and twenty-eight novels, Mari – known as “The Storycatcher of the Plains” – brought stories of the Sandhills and the plight of Native Americans to life. The Nebraskan author’s life and works are permanently on display at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. The Center includes other exhibits, such as the C. F. Cof-

fee Gallery showcasing early cattle ranches and banking in Northwest Nebraska, the Graves Photograph Collection of the region from 1906-1940, and the High Plains Gal-lery displaying temporary exhibits of art, history, and life in the region. The Center also has research facilities, a children’s corner with interactive activities, and a gift shop. The adjoining Chicoine Atrium provides a unique space for activities and events. The Center is conveniently situated thirty miles east of historic
