Welcome to the month of May. The days are getting longer and hopefully we will get some sun to help things dry out. I attended the Bowden Expanding Horizons Annual General Meeting on April 25th. I would like to commend all the members for the dedication and commitment that they have shown in the project of a new community hall for Bowden and District. This cohesive group has made astounding progress in the short time that they have been an entity. They will be starting construction shortly. The Volunteer Appreciation Supper took place on April 26th. This was part of National Appreciation Week from April 23 – April 29. The Town of Bowden is extremely fortunate in having a strong volunteer base that enables us to have numerous committees that do many recreational and community services. I would like to thank our Family and Community Support Services worker (Jade Prefontaine) for organizing this supper and for the many other projects that she is involved in. Our community, both rural and urban, is still having major issues with criminal activity. Break and enters and vehicle theft make up the majority the problem. Please be vigilant. Watch out for suspicious activity and report it to the Olds Royal Canadian Mounted Police at 403-556-3323. In emergency or crime in progress, phone 911. Any door to door solicitors must have a Town of Bowden business license. Please report any solicitors that do not have a business license. Another thought, if you are worried about activity close to your house, activate the panic button on your vehicle. The horn and flashing lights will bring attention to the area and should scare any potential criminals away. The Town of Bowden is committed to ensuring that we have a safe community. If you have any thoughts or ideas that may help, please contact the Town Office. The Town of Bowden will be hosting an Open House on the proposed annexation of Red Deer County land. The Open House will be held at the Town Office at 7:00 p.m. on May 3rd. Warm regards,
Mayor Robb Stuart

Bowden Expanding Horizons has
received great news! Alberta Culture
and Tourism has approved a $750,000
grant to match the $750,000 that has
already been raised for the new
Community Hall. This has brought the
group very close to it’s goal of
$1.7 million. Bowden Expanding
Horizons has worked very hard
fundraising and applying for grants, and
it has paid off. The new community hall
will be a 10,750 square foot building that will serve as a venue for local
events, community organizations, groups and families with a full
commercial kitchen.
A big thanks to Suzanne Blackwell for teaching the
female self defense course held on April 8th, to Beth
Kuntz and Jade Prefontaine for organizing it all, and
to all the ladies who participated in the course!
Sponsor a Basket
We all know that Hanging Baskets add to the beauty of our community, but did you know that they help the Recreation & Culture Boards with its community events too? Choose to sponsor a Hanging Basket for $60 and that money goes
directly to the Rec Board. In case you aren’t aware, the Rec Board is responsible for many community events such as the Sleigh Ride & Tour of Lights. If you
sponsor a basket, your name will be published in the Town Newsletter throughout the summer in recognition of your support. Please come into the
Town Office and sign up to sponsor a basket today!

Thanks to everyone who attended the Volunteer Appreciation Supper on
April 26th. There was such a great turn out with a delicious dinner catered by
Dixieland Catering. Thank you to CJ’s Pet Grooming for the donation of the
piñata and to Jade for organizing such a fun event to celebrate the
wonderful volunteers in our community!
Stop The Attack of the Killer Goldfish! Goldfish can kill our ecosystems if they're let
loose in Alberta’s waters, and yet, infestations of municipal storm water ponds
and other water bodies have been happening at alarming rates over the past
few years. How did they get there?
People have been releasing their unwanted pets into the neighbourhood ponds behind
their homes thinking this is more humane than other alternatives. However, goldfish can tolerate large fluctuations in water temperature and low levels of oxygen, meaning they can survive the winters in
poor water quality ponds. Feeding on snails, small insects, and fish eggs, they are both a competitor to and predator of our native fish. They can also grow to be the size of a dinner plate. In addition, they stir up the
mud as they feed on the bottom of the
waterbody, making the water murky and affecting the growth
of aquatic plants. Many people don’t know that releasing
fish into a public wa-terbody is illegal and can result in penalties up to $100,000, and
the possibility of a year in jail.
Thanks to the Bowden Fire Department and
volunteers putting on a great Easter egg hunt
and Easter activities last month!
In Celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, Marion Rasmussen will be planting seeds near the railroad tracks with the help of some grade four volunteers.
Thanks for taking time out of your day to make Bowden a beautiful place to be!
