Summer is a time of fun, but it is

also a time of increased sun

exposure, which can lead to health

consequences. Keeping these

health tips in mind and taking

preventative measures are crucial

for maximizing summer fun while

limiting health risks.

Sun exposure is a key source of vitamin D, so it should not be avoided altogether.

As with all good things, it should simply be kept in moderation. Ideally, time in the

sun should be most limited between 10am and 2pm, when exposure is at its peak.

The UVA and UVB rays at this time of day are at their most damaging.

Always apply sunscreen on all

areas that will be exposed to the

sun 20 minutes prior to exposure.

This will allow enough time for

the product to adequately absorb

into the skin. Reapply every

couple hours, or as instructed on

the bottle. Ideally, apply

sunscreen before getting dressed

so no patches of skin are missed.

Sunscreens should protect against

both UVA and UVB rays in

addition to having a high SPF.

Don’t neglect application to your

neck, chest, and hands, as they are

revealing of your true age. Skin on

these areas is also particularly

susceptible to sunburn. Invest in a

hand cream that offers SPF

protection and keep it handy as

application is needed. After the

frequent hand washing that happens

throughout the day, reapplication is a

step that should not be skipped.

Skincare products containing

antioxidants like vitamin C,

vitamin E, and green tea can

help reverse sun damage.

Try using a serum with

vitamins that are suitable for

all skin types to help boost

your sunblock. Additionally,

they should be applied after

sun exposure.

If you’re going to be out in the sun

for an extended period, wear a hat

and protective clothing. Covering up

with clothing will help significantly

reduce the amount of UV rays your

skin is exposed to, especially if

you’re not great at remembering to

reapply sunscreen.

To safeguard your vision, wear

protective eyewear that blocks UVA and

UVB rays. Sunglasses can help

prevent cataracts, as well as wrinkles

around the eyes. Also, anyone that has

ever had a sunburn on their eyelids can

vouch that sunglasses are a MUST!

Maintain a diet full of foods containing

antioxidants, such as leafy greens, melons, and

berries. Protein is also important, and should

be from healthy sources like salmon and egg

whites. Drink plenty of water throughout the

day. Carrying a bottle of water while on the go

will help prevent dehydration and heat stroke.
