MY STORY

Emily Clarke —Hong Kong Institute of Education Bachelor of Primary Education

Who knew five short months of exchange could have such an impact? For a nineteen year old who had never really lived out of home, going on exchange to Hong Kong taught me so many things both about another culture and about myself. I loved learning about my local friends’ lives - their everyday lives, faith and culture and they were also curious about what life was like for me in Australia!

I loved the day to day adventures of trying new food (and trying to order food in Cantonese!), navigating my way through the concrete jungle and even attending class in another country! I love traveling, but by living and studying in Hong Kong I was able to experience Hong Kong in a way that a tourist never would!

But along with these new experiences, I loved the bigger adventures such as seeing the Great Wall of China, traveling to the Philippines, going to Hong Kong Disneyland and trying my hand at dragonboating!

Going on exchange was one of the best decisions I have ever made! It has helped me to understand more about the world and about myself.

Perhaps the hardest part of going on exchange is leaving to come back home! I miss the experiences I had in Hong Kong and the friends I made - but I know I will be back, and through other students I met, I now have free accommodation throughout the world!

Where can I go? —An exchange with UOW is your ticket to over 150 destinations:

ASIA – PACIFIC: China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, New Caledonia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

EUROPE: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

LATIN AMERICA: Mexico and Brazil.

NORTH AMERICA: Canada and the United States of America.

My semester abroad at the University of Bologna in Italy was the most incredible experience of my life so far. Having an Italian background and majoring in Italian at UOW I finally had the opportunity to improve my language skills and immerse myself in the Italian culture. Bologna is such a vibrant student city – there are so many ways to get involved in different events and meet people from all over the world.

Living out of home for the first time was both challenging and rewarding. It taught me so much about myself and what I was capable of as well as allowing me to truly adopt the Italian way of life.

Having a base in Bologna also gave me the chance to travel to so many amazing places in Italy and Europe. From spending my 21st birthday in Disneyland Paris to island hopping in Sardegna I seized every opportunity I could to travel and be exposed to new cultures and surroundings.

Going on exchange was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. By stepping out of my comfort zone I experienced so much personal growth and gained a fresh perspective on my life in Australia. I developed wonderful friendships and made so many unforgettable memories that I will cherish for a lifetime.

Can I afford it? —Yes! While you are away on an Exchange program you continue to pay tuition to UOW, not the overseas university. You will pay for your airfare, visas, overseas accommodation and any applicable host uni fees.

Some short term programs may incur a fee, but the below funding options may be available to assist with associated costs of undertaking UOW overseas programs.

TRAVEL GRANTS

Students can apply for a UOW travel grant or receive funding from Australian Government initiatives such as the New Colombo Plan and Endeavour Mobility of between $500 and $8000.*

OS-HELP

The Australian Government offers OS-HELP loans allowing eligible undergraduate students to borrow over $6,000 per session of overseas study (maximum of two sessions) to use towards airfare, accommodation and other travel/study expenses. OS-HELP loans are then repaid with your accumulated HELP debt (including HECS) after your graduation from UOW.

CENTRELINK

If you currently receive Austudy or Youth Allowance, you may continue to receive these benefits while you are on exchange. Contact Centrelink for further details. *For more information on financing your overseas study and Australian Government initiatives go to: uow.edu.au/student/exchange/funding

MY STORY

Toby Whittington —Michigan State University Bachelor of Physical and Health Education

I attended a short course at Michigan State University (Go Green!) last July. I couldn’t recommend a short course like this one more. There were a large range of courses available to suit most areas of study, and as a result I met a huge number of new friends and broadened my horizons. Living and studying on a large college campus provided many experiences I’ll never forget. Aside from completing a unit of study, I got to see parts of America I wouldn’t have had the chance to visit, like Chicago and New York. If you’re thinking of travelling during Uni break, why not take the opportunity to study abroad in a course that only takes 3 weeks, and do some extra travel of your own?

MY STORY

Yang-Ming Goh —New Colombo Plan China Fellow 2016 Bachelor of Engineering (Dean’s Scholar) (Electrical)

Before I began my New Colombo Plan program in China, those around me expressed both excitement and apprehension at my plans to spend the next 18 months studying and working here. Now having past the halfway point I am completely in agreement with those who said it would be an experience of a lifetime and have even started dreaming about different ways I can come back.

Beijing is a very fast paced city, home to the best universities in China and a bustling international community, rich in history, art and culture. When I look back on the person I was before I left, I realise how much more open to, and interested in other cultures I’ve become. Not only have I been immersed in Chinese culture, I have been exposed to the multiple cultures they welcome here.

I’ve also found travelling China to be very easy on a student budget with frequent, convenient public transport and cheap accomodation. Most people don’t think of China as a scenic destination but it is home to many majestic mountains and beautiful national parks, so many that you won’t be able to see all of them.

Some of the highlights of my journey so far include making friends from all over the world, studying Mandarin intensively for a month, sleeping overnight on the Great Wall, hiking up Taishan, bungee jumping and skiing near Beijing and being a delegate at the Australia China Emerging Leaders Summit.

40K and India was the spark that began a degree full of international experiences. My time in India is a mosaic of memories which combine to form an inspiring and defining crossroad in my life. Being immersed in the vibrancy of Indian culture – the call of Mosques every morning, sun rises piercing through rows of coconut trees, drinking chai at the local restaurant, village cricket matches and wandering through temples lit with one million candles – gave a unique insight to the human experience and an appreciation for what all people share, especially laughter.

The program itself was invaluable for bridging the gap between theory and practice. It was an opportunity to do business in a foreign country and put into practice valuable skills in teamwork, innovation and negotiation. As a crash course in social business and entrepreneurship the program reinvigorated a passion for innovation.

The 40K program has motivated me to take on greater challenges and helped me to realise my leadership potential. I definitely owe a lot to the challenges and experiences of globe – and the lifelong friends I shared them with.
