From the

Director’s Desk . . . “Silent gratitude isn't much use

to anyone.”

~ Gladys Bronwyn Stern

Happy Spring! Although our winter has been mild, I am very

much looking to warmer days, flowers budding, and birds

chirping. It’s a time of rejuvenation when things begin to look

up after the dreary days of winter.

Staying optimistic is sometimes challenging. But it is indeed

our choice on how we face each day. Sometimes it’s as easy as

changing our words. Instead of saying “Oh great, another day”

how about shifting to our words to “Another day — how great!”

I’ve always believed that we are exactly where we are supposed

to be in life. Granted, I have not always understood at the time,

but the lessons learned help to shape who I am today. When I

take stock of my life, I’m grateful.

Yet, I do sometimes fall into looking at what’s wrong rather

than at all that’s right. And, not remembering, that people

really do act with the best of intentions even if their way is not

my way.

So, at this time of rejuvenation, I’m taking a step back and then

a step forward to make a real effort to look for the good and to

appreciate what all of you bring to my life and sharing it. After

all, silent gratitude isn’t much use to anyone.

Now that it’s easier to get out, I invite you to visit the Monroe

Center more often. We some fun events planned for March,

plus a couple educational programs. Please join us. We’re

planning the annual Easter Egg Hunt for your grandchildren

and great grandchildren on Saturday, March 26, and we are

serving Easter Brunch on Easter Sunday. Please invite your

family and friends and RSVP to reserve your table.

Thank you for the joy you bring to my life, and best

wishes for a Blessed Easter.

March 2016 ENGAGE! · Monroe Center for Healthy Aging 9

Dear Friends of the Monroe Center for Healthy Aging,

Companionship is a universal human survival need. In the words of the 2015 Monroe

County Older Adults Needs Assessment, “Older adults have a need and desire for affilia-

tion, for ties and connections with one another, just as people of all ages do...”

The (just forming) Senior Neighbors Program, sponsored by the Monroe Center for

Healthy Aging promises to fill that need for isolated seniors by offering companionship to those who have requested it. Our goal is to ensure that seniors have rewarding social connections and most importantly, we wish to help them stay healthy, aware, informed

and engaged.

What is Companionship? Companionship may take as many forms as there are people. Your being there, and being the dependable person who takes the time to listen and

engage offers a crucial opportunity for healthy experiences and change. Here’s some examples of activities: talking and reminiscing, playing card or table games, watching shows or movies and discussing them, letter writing, sharing new skills, nonmedical

assistance with activities of daily living and exploring community based resources that

enable the senior to remain optimally independent.

Some volunteers may wish to use personal vehicles or public transit to help seniors get to

meaningful activities such as a senior center or a congregate meal. Not a requirement, but a valuable add-on when appropriate and possible. Some volunteers may choose to go a step further to provide a caregiver with a break (respite) while they spend time with

the cared for senior. Caregivers are truly grateful for a break in order to take care of

themselves or simply get a chance to rest and recharge.

Whatever form of Companionship you choose, you will be trained to access resources to keep you and your senior protected, safe and informed. Volunteer transportation and

meal reimbursement and supplemental liability insurance are provided throughout all

aspects of Companionship.

Call and volunteer today to be a Senior Neighbor!

Yours in community service,

Joe

March 2016 ENGAGE! · Monroe Center for Healthy Aging 10

From the Program Manager . . .

You’ve probably heard someone say, “Oh, that’s on my bucket list!” and may have wondered what they were talking about. By dictionary definition,

a bucket list is “a list of things that one has not done before, but wants to do before dying.” It comes from the phrase kick the bucket (to die) and the expression has been around for about 10 years (that’s what the internet says so it must be true!). A bucket list can be endless, extravagant, and unachievable. But to me, part of the fun is having items that I can achieve right along with items that I know will never happen. It’s about setting goals, prioritizing, and figuring out how to achieve them. Another way to think about it: What do you want on the highlight reel of your whole life?

Some common bucket list items I found on the internet were: Ride in a hot air balloon Fall in love Run a marathon Go to Hollywood Be on the cover of a magazine See the Eiffel Tower in person Go sky diving Find a 4 leaf clover See all 7 continents Be in Times Square on New Year’s Eve Go to Disney World Go on a cruise See an iceberg Be an extra in a movie Send a message in a bottle Be a go go dancer (for only one night) Beat cancer Win big at the casino Go to Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Oktoberfest in Germany Reconcile with my daughter/son, brother/sister, mother/father

With just a few exceptions, I bet there is at least one member of the Monroe Center that has done every one of those items on the list. What a great accomplishment! And now that you have completed an item (or 2 or 3) from your bucket list, did you add other new items to it? What have you always wanted to do but have not done yet? What are your biggest goals and dreams? What activities or skills do you still want to learn? What experiences do you want to have so you can live a life without regret? As I said previously, my bucket list falls into a few different categories.

Money is no object - Travel the world; hire a personal trainer to come to my house every day and force me to exercise!

Never going to happen – Spend the afternoon with my (long-deceased) Great Grandma; appear on The Sonny & Cher Show (I was 3 when I wanted to do this); and see the Detroit Lions win the Super Bowl (maybe I should aim low and be happy with a playoff win?).

Going to do it - Learn a foreign language; have a Hershey Chocolate Body Wrap at a spa; see the Grand Canyon; go on a zip line; ride the Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point; drive a car at MIS Race Track; attend a University of Michigan football game; and have a glass of wine in Napa Valley.

Perhaps this article has inspired you to write your bucket list, or make some specific plans to knock something off your bucket list.

Have no regrets – what does your highlight reel look like?

The Vision Support group meets on the 1st Thursday of the month (March 3) at 10:00 a.m. to

discover ways to handle different situations that people who are visually-impaired might

encounter. The group often discusses new vision aids, transportation issues, and local help

that is available. Volunteer Sue List puts the newsletter to tape for Center members.

Blood Sugar Testing - Keeping blood sugar controlled most of the time is an important part of

treating diabetes. Blood sugar levels change all day long, every day, for everyone, and checks

provide a snapshot of our blood sugar at that moment. The Center is happy to provide this

service sponsored by Magnum Care of Monroe.

1st Monday (March 7) of the month at 11:00 a.m. and the 3rd Friday (March 18) of the

month with Magnum of Monroe at 11:00 a.m. (Subject to availability of nurses.)

March 2016 ENGAGE! · Monroe Center for Healthy Aging 17

Anyone happen to watch the Super Bowl? It was one of the most exciting games I have seen in a while. To think that this could be the last game for Peyton Manning made it more intriguing. Denver which had one of the best defenses in the league, proved it on this day sacking Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers 4 times. It seemed that Denver had their number all day. In fact, Von Miller was in Cam Newton face most of the time and was voted the games’ Most Valuable Player.

I really don't know if Peyton Manning is going to retire or not, but whatever he decides will be his final decision. He really doesn't need to determine what he can do or cannot do! After winning a lot of regular season games and playoff games, if I were him, I would retire right now without getting hurt. Peyton, you did enough for the game of football. Now would be the time to step down and enjoy time with your wife, children, and family.

Also starting in March will be the beginning of the NCAA College Basketball Tournament. This is also exciting to watch and follow your favorite team. There should be a lot of good teams entering this tournament, like Michigan State, Michigan, and Ohio State. You never know when one team upsets another team.

The Detroit Pistons are still hanging in there for a playoff spot. They will be playing a lot of meaningful games.

The Detroit Red Wings are also playing some good hockey right now to stay in the playoff race. Petr Mrazek has been good in goal for the Red Wings blocking shots and making some good saves too.

And finally if you can believe it the Detroit Tigers will be starting spring training down in Florida. This should be exciting for the Tigers this year after making off-season trades to improve the team. Any changes will be better than last year when the Tigers finished in last place. Hopefully things will be better this year.

Well that is all for now sports fans. Take care and I will talk to you next month.
