here are times when our current circumstances seem to weigh heavily on our psyches and the desire for a fresh start becomes more and more

prominent. We sometimes flippantly speak of fresh start and new beginnings without considering that in order to achieve them we have to rid ourselves of stale baggage. Holding on to baggage is not unique to any particular individual and mani-fests itself in our fear of the unknown and some of our past experiences. A fresh start is that set of personal choices that you have to be willing to make and it is that step you have to take in order to get to where you want to be.

The timing of a fresh start varies from individual to individual; it could be the start of a new calendar year bringing with it a renewed vigour for self improvement, a mother’s commit-ment to being a better person for her newly born child or that student intent on kicking off the semester the right way. A fresh start is the enthusiasm of first day of a new job, the happiness and togetherness of newlyweds, the fondness of a new hit song and the desire to start a new project, a new lifestyle with a brand new attitude.

Any of these experiences will make you feel sheer joy and passion with an overwhelming and constant sense of curiosity about this newfound interest. How many of us after liking a new song, listen to it on repeat and after two weeks at most, have found another song that has become our new favou-rite? A fresh start usually feels good initially until that newness starts fading and we start exploring other new alternatives. Things, people or experiences will not always remain new but you can always find a new meaning to appreciate them.

Things get old, people change and our experiences become mundane but we should always remind ourselves of the little things that we can keep doing to preserve that ‘freshness’. It is then that everyday and every experience will become new. Newness becomes old too quickly when we start paying less attention and taking it for granted.

Sometimes we are not always given the opportunity to make a brand new start but we can choose to have a brand new end. You cannot undo your past but you can always change your thinking and convert that which seemed like an ending of doom into hope with endless possibilities. Mary Pickford once said, “If you have made mistakes, there is always an-other chance for you. You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing we call ‘failure’ is not the falling down, but the staying down.”

As we seek to make a fresh start daily let us always remember that :

New things can and will become old.It is our respon-sibility to work at always appreciating and finding ways to keep ‘newness’ alive. When you decide that you no longer like or want or have become bored with what was once new, remember that what you now have, you also considered new and from your perspective then, it even appeared to be ‘greener grass.’

The secret to always finding joy in every new expe-rience is to complete things started. It is pointless to always be starting afresh without seeing projects through to completion.

Embark upon each day with a fresh start with the main objective being to make each day better than the one before and being grateful for new opportunities.

foR The femAle bodyEight HealthyDrinks

Sip your way to a stronger immune system and a better mood, and reduce your cancer risk with these eight healthy drinks. When you think of good-for-you beverages, water immediately comes to mind,

but there are others worth adding to your diet.

GrEEN TEAThE BENEfiT: Helps reduce risk of osteoporosis, cancer, heart disease and cavities. Green tea contains a rich concentration of flavonoids and polyphenols, natural antioxi-dants that may protect cells from carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) and inhibit tumour growth by helping to neutralize free radicals in the body. The tea’s antioxidants may also guard against heart disease by relaxing blood vessels, inhibiting the formation of blood clots that trigger heart attacks and strokes. Green tea also contains fluoride, which strengthens teeth; the flavonoids may build up bones as well, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and tooth decay.CAloriEs: 0

MiNT TEAThE BENEfiT: Eases cramps and helps ward off indigestion. Mint is an antispas-modic, so it can relax muscles, which combats stiffness and aches. It also aids in digestion by promoting the movement of food through the digestive tract.CAloriEs: 0

oNE PErCENT rEduCEd-fAT MilkThE BENEfiT: Curbs cravings and helps protect against osteoporosis. Because it has the components of a healthy meal -- carbohydrates, protein, and a little fat you absorb it slowly and stay full longer. It also stabilizes blood sugar, so you’re less susceptible to cravings. Milk is the ideal source of calcium, because it contains vitamin D, which is needed for maximum calcium absorption. It may also help your body stop stor-ing fat. In a recent study, women who consumed three to four servings of low-fat dairy foods (milk being one) lost nearly twice as much weight as those who took in lower amounts. The calcium causes your body’s cells to burn the fat instead of holding on to it. This makes it easier to reach and maintain your goal weight.CAloriEs: 120 for 8 ounces.

soy MilkThE BENEfiT: Lowers risk of heart disease. Soy milk contains soluble fibre and soy protein, which lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and triglycerides, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. If you’re drinking it instead of cow’s milk, buy soy milk fortified with calcium and vita-mins A and D. One caveat: Soy contains phytoestrogens, which may be linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Talk to your doctor about drinking soy milk if you have a family history

of the disease or have had it yourself.CAloriEs: 81 for 8 ounces.

hoT ChoColATEThE BENEfiT: Improves mood and may help protect against heart disease. Chocolate in-creases the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is responsible for regulating mood. (Low levels of serotonin have been associated with depression.) Cocoa is also rich in polyphenols, plant-derived antioxidants that may protect cells against oxidative damage that can

lower HDL (good) cholesterol levels, possibly putting you at higher risk for a heart attack.CAloriEs: 195 for 8 ounces homemade cocoa; 115 for a powdered mix.

low-sodiuM ToMATo JuiCEThE BENEfiT: May protect against numerous cancers. Processed tomato products are the rich-est source of the antioxidant lycopene, which has been associated with a reduced risk of lung and

stomach cancer, as well as pancreatic, colorectal, esophageal, oral, breast, and cervical can-cers. Lycopene also appears to protect the lungs and heart against oxidative damage,

helping to ward off cardiovascular disease.CAloriEs: 31 for 6 ounces.

CrANBErry JuiCEThE BENEfiT: Helps prevent gum disease. Research suggests that the same antibacterial properties present in cranberry juice that fight off urinary tract infections may also protect against periodontal disease. Experts theorize that a component of the juice called nondialysable material (NDM) in-hibits bacteria from sticking to the gums. Many nutritionists are wary of fruit juices because of their

sugar content, so limit your intake to no more than one glass (6 to 8 ounces) daily. CAloriEs: 140 for 8 ounces.

orANGE JuiCEThE BENEfiT: May ward off cataracts, cancers, and birth defects and boost im-

munity. An excellent source of vitamin C, orange juice is also a potent antioxidant that may protect against a variety of diseases including cataracts (a clouding of the eye’s lens that can lead to blindness) and lung cancer. Vitamin C may prevent oxidative damage that can cause cells to become cancerous, and it im-proves immune-cell functioning, enabling your body to fight off infections more

efficiently. And it’s a good source of folate, which protects against neural-tube defects in fetuses. To get the extra benefit of bone protection, try some calcium-

fortified orange juice.CAloriEs: 115 for 8 ounces.

here are certain things that women do to enhance their look and style that men truly appreciate; however, most men never really figure out what exactly those little things are. Many are quite content to chalk it up to women being com-

plicated or that they’re simply Venusians. But in reality, there are specific items and characteristics that place a woman a notch above the rest. These must-haves may seem insignificant but we’ve heard from the ladies themselves, who say they are essential in every sense of the word.

Little Black DressWhat’s a wardrobe without that little black dress (LBD)? This timeless piece can be so-phisticated, simple, trendy and chic all at the same time. It’s important to note that while “sexy” is usually the defining characteristic when picking out your LBD, comfort should also be right up there in the prerequisites.

Safety PinYup, that old safety pin can be a definite lifesav-er in a myriad of ways. Remember that scene from “Pretty Woman” when Richard Gere’s “Edward Lewis” asked Vivian (played by Julia Roberts), “You make $100 an hour and you have a safety pin holding your boot up?” A safety pin can be quite handy if Murphy’s Law causes you to lose a button or break a zipper or a sandal.

A pair of Fitted JeansWhen it comes to jeans, it’s not always about the brand but more about the fit, although some women are able to find that perfect fit in one specific brand. A perfectly fitted pair of jeans is hard to find but once you’ve tried them you will know. Jeans have the ability to work well with tops of any colour and style.

FlatsA pair of flats is just as essential as a pair of stilettos for those dress down and comfy days suitable for a picnic or lunch

with the girls.

Black SuitSurprise, surprise, a black suit is just as important for women as it is for our male counterparts. This classic is a ward-robe fixture that always seems to be the

right fit for a number of occasions.

Diamond earringsDiamonds are indeed a girl’s best friend. That perfect pair adds class to a woman’s outfit and definitely makes her feel a little bit more spe-cial.

Pencil Skirt Pencil skirts can be dressed down for work or dressed up with a pair of heels for a special night out. The versatility is what makes this piece so essential.

Stilettos A pair of stilettos instantly feminizes any outfit. They may hurt your feet but sometimes that’s a small price to pay for

such a stunning addition.

Classic Clutch/PurseA good designer purse can last you a very long time and they are perfect for any and every occasion, formal or oth-

erwise.

Sexy UnderwearJust wearing sexy underwear under your outfit can add that little spark of confi-dence, and only you or your special per-

son will know the source..
