Your open dayguide.

Thanks for registering for one of our open days, this little guide is packed full of information so that you can make the most out of your visit.

We can’t wait to see you.

If you study with us in 2018, you will be making history. You’ll be one of the very first students to call the UK’s newest university campus ‘home.’ Located in a prime town centre location on the banks of the River Nene, Waterside Campus is a £330m project that will take your breath away...Your Waterside Campus.A few minutes’ walk from the town centre, the campus is located on the banks of the River Nene in Northampton’s Enterprise Zone, where global brands sit alongside a huge number of thriving small businesses. If you choose to live on campus in your first year you’ll be living in our on-site student village – which includes stunning five-storey flats and four-storey townhouses with landscaped courtyards. On your doorstep is something really unique. A Grade II listed railway engine shed on the south side of the campus has been converted into the home of the Students’ Union and its sports teams, societies and services. The building is a fusion of classic and modern design – and is a great place to relax with friends.

Where learning meets lifestyle. At the centre of the Waterside Campus is the new Learning Commons building – the beating heart of the new University of Northampton. It’s a space to read, research, discuss group projects or just catch up with friends and enjoy a coffee. Waterside blurs divides by bringing together resources, staff and spaces that would traditionally be separate. From the moment you walk through the entrance into the immense, light-filled foyer of the Learning Commons, you are going to know this isn’t your standard university.northampton.ac.uk/hello-waterside

What can I do at an open day?Open days are your chance to really get a feel for university and find answers to all of your questions about studying with us. During your visit, we have loads that you can take part in so that you finish the day all set to make your application to us.

Campus tours.Duration: 45 minutes – 1 hour.Tours depart approximately every 15 minutes. Our campus tours are conducted by our Student Ambassadors - current University of Northampton students. Talk to them about their experiences of studying here. The campus tour will show you all the key facilities available to students including the Library, IT suites, lecture theatres, Students’ Union, catering facilities and accommodation. All of the many services we offer are coming with us to the new Waterside Campus in September 2018.

Waterside Campus tours.Duration: 1 hour 20 mins approx. including travel time.Tours depart approximately every hour.A bus to our Waterside Campus site will be running during the day. As construction is still underway we can’t offer access onto Waterside Campus but a public footpath passing some of the campus buildings offers a great opportunity to see the development. Buses will depart on a

first come first served basis throughout the day from both Avenue and Park Campuses.

On campus accommodation.Single en-suite show flats are available to view in our halls of residences at Avenue and Park Campus throughout the day. A variety of accommodation types are available including twin rooms, single en-suite and single rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Our Residential Life team will be available to answer your accommodation queries.

Town centre accommodation. The University of Northampton also offers town centre based accommodation for first year students in addition to the on campus options. St John’s Hall of Residence provides en-suite accommodation for 468 students and tours of the accommodation are available during Open Days. Visitors will need to make their own way to the hall, there is free car parking nearby and it’s well connected via public transport. Maps and directions will be provided at registration.

Interactive talks.Your subject specific sessions will be detailed on your booking confirmation, we run these twice during the day so you don’t miss out on anything. In addition to these, we also run the following talks:Welcome to UON Find out more about us and our new Waterside Campus, opening September 2018.

UCAS and Personal Statement advice If you are starting to think about your personal statement, attend one of our presentation sessions for guidance on what to include. Or alternatively if you would like an informal chat or have some specific questions we also run a first come first served drop in session at both Avenue and Park Campuses.Financial support talk Find out more about scholarships, bursaries and financial guidance.

Student services. At our open days our Student Centre becomes a one stop shop for all your student services needs - if you have any questions on student accommodation, finance or additional support needs drop-in throughout the day to find out more.

Catering. There are various catering outlets for you to grab a quick bite to eat or a coffee open during the day. Park Campus has a Restaurant and coffee shop, whilst Avenue Campus offers a main restaurant and Newton Cafè. They are a great place to stop for lunch or a quick break during your visit. Food and drinks including Starbucks Coffee are also available in our Students’ Union bar.

Become a Changemaker.Changemaker is a term you will hear used a lot at the University of Northampton, and there are great reasons why.In 2013 we were the first university in the UK to be given the title of “Changemaker Campus” by Ashoka U – a community of leaders and institutions who work to find solutions to society’s problems through Higher Education and beyond. We are part of an exclusive network of only 40 colleges and universities from around the world that are recognised as Changemaker Campuses. Which means we are among the global leaders in social innovation with the vision of what education can be.

Do you have an idea that could make a difference? We want to help you to be a leader of the future, and so we offer a Changemaker programme that will allow you to develop that idea and address a problem in the world through a new social venture. Whether that is a business in its own right or a different way of working that changes the way people view that problem. As a graduate of the programme, you will be internationally recognised by Ashoka U as a Changemaker who has what it takes to make an impact on society.

I learned a lot about developing as a person, working effectively within a team and meeting set deadlines, which are all skills that are crucial within the workplace.

Hello from the Students’ Union.Seven things you will learn about the Students’ Union this Open Day.1. Membership is free and automatic. From the moment you enrol at the University of Northampton, you automatically become a member of the Students’ Union, an independent organisation and diverse community of 15,000 members dedicated to ensuring you have the best possible time at University. Even better – membership is FREE!

2. Want to join a sports team? Go on, it’s free! Our University of Northampton Students’ Union is one of only three students’ unions in England* to offer absolutely free sport to everyone, across all of our thirty seven Sports Clubs.Whether you’re interested in joining American Football, Cheerleading, Trampolining, Rugby or any of our outstanding sports teams you’ll have access to professional coaching, with no match day costs to pay, no transport costs to cover and no membership fee!Over the course of your three years at Northampton this could stand to save you hundreds of pounds compared to other Students’ Unions in the region.*At time of print

3. There’s a society for almost everything - and they’re free too.Why not try something new? We have a range of over 60 diverse societies, from academic groups set up to support your learning such as Law or Psychology Societies, through to fun and recreational societies such as Ski and Snowboarding, did we mention there’s a Cake Society? If you can’t find a group you’d like to join, you can start your own, which is exactly what the Medieval Society did - you can find them acting out viking battle re-enactments - or join the Harry Potter Society for a game of Quidditch. They are all free to join – so you can join as many as you want and try something new!

4. We have the best entertainments

in town.In 2015, the Students’ Union’s ‘Insane Tuesdays’ event was shortlisted for Best Regular Student Club Night at the Ents Forum Awards - placing us in the top three in the UK. Over the past few years, we’ve had chart toppers Sigma, Gorgon City, WSTRN and Example join us alongside TV favourites Dan Osborne, Joey Essex, EastEnders’ Steve McFadden, childhood heroes The Chuckle Brothers and top DJs including Radio 1’s Danny Howard, Huw Stephens, B.Traits and Mistajam.

5. We help you to stretch your student loan.

The Students’ Union is an independent charity so we reinvest all of the money

made in our bars, venues and retail outlets into providing our student activities. We

want to make sure your money goes further so as well as free sports and societies we

aim to provide you with services and activities at student friendly prices. The Students’ Union

also operates a loyalty scheme across all its venues rewarding you five per cent of all your purchases back in points to spend. If you’re looking for a part

time job to supplement your income alongside your studies why not apply for one of the many jobs at the Students’ Union? Last year our student staff each took home an average of £1,375 in wages across the year.

6. Take part and develop your skills. The Students’ Union is led by over 1,100 student volunteers working in a range of roles from managing Sports Clubs and Societies to representing classmates as Course Reps or supporting community work. The Students’ Union is here to help support your ambitions and help you and your groups develop. Throughout the year we recognise our volunteers’ achievements with prizes ranging from chocolate to vouchers and we host spectacular award ceremonies across Northampton to celebrate your hard work.

7. We’re here to help. The Students’ Union is always here for you. We offer independent, free, academic advice for those times when things don’t quite go to plan and academic representation through our Elected Officers when you need your voice to be heard. Whatever your passion or interest, time commitment or background it couldn’t be easier to get involved with the Students’ Union and make the most out of your university experience.
