Do You Know How YourWater Usage Compares?

The average residential water use in Glendale is approximately 106 gallons per person per day. This is a rough estimate and can vary based onthe following factors:

• Number of people living in or visiting the home• Size and type of landscaping and how it is watered• Swimming pool or spa• Water-efficient appliances and fixtures• Personal habits• Leaks

The following example shows you how to calculate your water usage per person per day. You can obtain the water use data by looking at your Glendale water bill. City utility bills reflect water usage in thousands of gallons (9 = 9,000 gallons).

Report Water WasteWater is a precious resource in the desert and it ’s important to use it wisely. If you observe landscape irrigation-related water waste, you can report it at 623-930-3535 or online at www.GlendaleOne.com.

Hide & SeekHow to Find a Water LeakAccording to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average household’s leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year. Mark your calendar for EPA’s Fix A Leak Week,March 16-22, as a reminder to find and fix leaks inside and outside your home.

Find Sneaky LeaksStep One: Check Your Water Meter. Most residential water meters are located near the curb or sidewalk at the front of the property in aconcrete “box”. Lift the lid on the box and you willsee an analog display. Make sure all water indoors and outdoors is off. If the small triangle on thedisplay is spinning, water is passing through your meter and you have a leak.

Step Two: Check Indoors. Toilet leaks are the most common type of leak found indoors. To check for a toilet leak, place food coloring in the tank. If color appears in the toilet bowl, without flushing, youhave a leak.

Step Three: Check Outdoors. Irrigation leaks are the most common type of leak found outdoors. To check for an irrigation leak, walk your property and look for wet spots, small holes, and depressions. Turn on your irrigation system and walk your property again to look for leaks that only occur when the irrigation system is on.

Step Four: Download “Smart Home Water Guide”at www.smarthomewaterguide.org for more information on how to find and fix water leaks.

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY

It’s Census Time –Make Glendale Count!Every 10 years a census is conducted to count each person living in the United States. The next Census Day is April 1, 2020. This is Glendale’s once in a decade chance to make sure that everyone in ourcity is counted.

Every person counted represents over $3,000 annually in state and federal funding for important programs that serve Glendale residents like public safety, education, roads, and health care. When membersof our community go uncounted, that funding couldgo to other cities and states.

The census also determines election districts, so being undercounted means that Glendale will not receive its fair share of representation in the state and federal government.

You should know that census data is completelyconfidential and by law cannot be shared with any other government agencies, including law enforcement. Beginning March 12, you can respond to the census online or by phone. Check your mailbox for instructions from the United States Census Bureau.

If you haven’t already completed your questionnaire, take 10 minutes to complete it now. Those 10 minutes will have a lasting impact on our community for the next 10 years. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or have recently moved to Glendale, a millennial or a baby boomer, you count. Make sure everyone in your household gets counted by completing the census questionnaire. It ’s important, quick and safe.

Visit www.glendaleaz.com/census for more information about the census and how you count for your community.

Be a Neat Neighbor & Maintain a Tidy YardThe mission of the Glendale Code Compliance Division is to maintain established community standards that preserve and promote the health, safety and living environment of our community and neighborhoods. Winter showers not only bring spring flowers, but undesirable weeds too. Please be a neat neighborand keep grass and weeds cut to 6 inches or less in height as required by Glendale City Code. For more information, visit glendaleaz.com/codecomplianceor call 623-930-3610.

Celebrate the 50thAnniversary of Earth Day!April 22, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day. Initiated in 1970, Earth Day is a call-to-action to everyone to protect our shared environment. To commemorate this significant anniversary, Glendale will be offering environmental-themed activities and programs all month long. For more information, call 623-930-3596.

MAY Clean & Green2020

The Value of WaterWater is essential to all life and sustains our natural environment. Everyone uses water to drink, cook, clean and for sanitation. The average single-family residence in Glendale uses 9,000 gallons of water and generates 6,500 gallons of wastewater a month. The city provides water and wastewater services to residential customers for approximately $2 per day.

The Glendale Water Services Department takes its responsibility of providing quality and reliable water, wastewater, environmental and storm water services very seriously. Water and wastewater services are provided 24 hours a day, every day. Water Services responds to water and wastewater emergencies in a timely manner to maintain these necessary services. The department strategically manages water supplies through long-term planning, implementation of new technologies, and acquisition and use of renewable resources.

Know Your WaterThe Glendale Water Services Department provides safe, reliable, and high-quality drinking water for over 240,000 people. Water Services tests, analyzes and monitors water quality many times every day to ensure the water provided is clean and safe to use. Every May, the city publishes the annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) that contains information about the quality of your drinking water.

To get a copy of the most recent Water Quality Report, visit www.glendaleaz.com/2019ccr or call the Glendale Water Services Department at 623-930-4100.

Glendale is Preparedfor DroughtThe Western U.S. is in an ongoing 20-year drought. This has greatly impacted the Colorado River system including Lake Mead and Lake Powell. As of January 1, 2020, there is a Tier Zero shortage of Colorado River water. At this tier, there is no direct impact to the water supplies for cities, residential water users, and Native American Indian Tribes.

Even though we are in a drought, Glendale is well pre-pared to meet water demand during drought or water shortage conditions. The city ’s Drought Management Plan ensures that best management practices are in place to minimize the negative impacts of water shortages resulting from drought. A Tier Zero shortage of Colorado River water does not trigger Glendale’s Drought Management Plan.

Through careful planning and resource management, we are fortunate to have many water sourcesavailable to us – assuring us a long-term supply. We obtain our water from the following sources:

1. Salt River Project (SRP) – Snow and rain runoff from the Salt and Verde River watershed.

2. Central Arizona Project (CAP) – Snow and rain runoff from the Colorado River watershed.

3. Groundwater – Underground water pumped from wells.

4. Reclaimed water – Treated, recycled wastewater for non-potable uses (e.g. landscape, industrial, etc.).

JUNE Clean & Green2020

Be Preparedthis Monsoon Season! The official start date of the monsoon season is June 15 as established by the National Weather Service.

Only Rain in theStorm DrainWhat happens in the watershed stays in the water-shed. As rain falls on the ground, it picks up dirt, trash, oil, grease, pet waste, chemicals, and other pollutants. In Glendale, stormwater runoff does not go to a water treatment plant before it flows into our washes and waterways.

Please help keep Glendale clean and green byfollowing these simple tips:

1. Sweep yard debris into piles and dispose of it in the trash can.

2. Drain or backwash your pool water into the sanitary sewer, not into the street.

3. Wash vehicles at the carwash, not on the driveway or street.

4. Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly and according to the instructions.

5. Pick up pet waste and dispose of it in the trash can.

6. Fix vehicle leaks and return used automotive fluids at an auto parts store or schedule a household hazardous waste disposal pick-up with the Glendale Solid Waste Division at 623-930-2660.

For more information, visitwww.glendaleaz.com/environmentalprotection.

Areas that Flood Aren’tAlways in the FloodplainA devastating monsoon or rainstorm can occur on any property. Even properties outside the 100-year floodplain may flood if the rainfall is intense or long in duration. Insurance policies taken out by people who either rent or own homes typically do not cover flood damage. Flood insurance must be specifically added as a separate insurance policy. Property owners who live in communities like the city of Glendale, that participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), can purchase flood insurance protection through an insurance agent or an insurer participating in the NFIP. If your insurance agent cannot provide flood insurance, you can contact the National Flood Insurance Call Center at 1-800-427-4661 to request an insurance agent referral. For more information, visit www.fema.gov/national-flood-insurance-program.

Help Keep Our Air CleanAir pollution tends to get worse in the summer with the formation of ground level ozone. Emissions from vehicles, gasoline, paints, and solvents are themain contributors to ozone. Help protect air qualityby driving less, carpooling, using public transit, telecommuting, and refueling your vehicle at night. For more information, visit cleanairmakemore.com.

SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY

Caring for ourTrees in GlendaleDid you know that Glendale has been named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for 23 consecu-tive years? Trees are so vital, not only because we live in a desert and they provide shade canopy, but also because trees make our community greener, literally and figuratively! Glendale’s parks and trail system contains more than 14,000 planted trees. We are currently beginning an updated inventory and full tree assessment, to create a baseline for a sound plan to properly maintain healthy trees throughout the city.

The Parks Division has contracted West CoastArborist Inc. (WCA) to conduct this inventory, which will consist of creating a GIS-based database that staff will be able to use in the future, as wellas identifying species, size and age, health andmaintenance needs of all trees. WCA will alsoperform some of the maintenance services thatrequire specialized equipment and skill.

Conserving Waterin Parks with NewIntelligent Irrigation

In 2019, the Parks Division implemented a new intelligent irrigation system in 19 city parks with the help of WaterCentric, a company that provided and installed the equipment at no cost to the city. This system’s technology includes weather and flow sensors for real time leak detection and automatic system shut down. The contract calls for WaterCentric to pay the capital costs of the equipment and installation, and then be paid back based on the monthly water savings.

This new system is a win-win for the city of Glendale. Not only does the city save money in the long run, but we are maximizing our water use in this desert climate. Furthermore, it will ultimately create the aesthetic appeal of our parks, reducing the brown spotting and over-greening of areas. The system is currently in use in the 19 highest water-use parks; following a demonstration period staff will evaluate further roll out within the park system.

AUGUST Clean & Green2020

Cash for Removing GrassGlendale water customers can receive a rebate for converting their water-thirsty grass lawns into desert-friendly landscapes. Save time, water, energy, and money by making the switch to a water-wise landscape.

Here are four easy steps on how to get started:

1. Get free “how-to” information. Receive free publications on how to successfully convert grass to a water-smart landscape by calling 623-930-3760 or visiting www.glendaleaz.com/waterconservation.

2. Request a free consultation. Glendale Water Services Department – Conservation and Sustainable Living staff provide free, on-site landscape consultations to Glendale water customers. We offer advice to help you install and maintain a sustainable landscape.

3. Learn about the landscape requirements. Single-family customers must remove at least 500 square feet of grass. Businesses, HOAs, and multi-family customers must remove at least 1,000 square feet of grass and participate in the Landscape Water Budget Program. The converted area must be landscaped with Arizona-friendly plants (bare soil and artificial grass do not qualify).

4. Call 623-930-3760 to schedule a landscape inspection. After the inspection, landscapes that meet the criteria will receive a rebate dependent on the amount of grass removed.

Mowing Down PollutionTo improve air quality and reduce air pollution produced by gasoline powered lawn and garden equipment, the Maricopa County Air Quality Department in partnership with the Arizona Department of Environ-mental Quality, created the Mowing Down Pollution Program. This lawn and garden equipment replacement program, which is available to residents of Maricopa County, provides up to $200 in vouchers towards the purchase of a new electric or battery powered lawn mower and one lawn and garden device when the old working gasoline powered equipment is recycled.

The program encourages the use of clean electric or battery powered lawn and garden equipment rather than gasoline powered lawn and garden equipmentto aid in the reduction of air pollution year-round.For more info, visit cleanairmakemore.com/lawn.

NOVEMBER Clean & Green2020

Follow good wastedisposal practices toprevent a clogged pipe from disrupting your plans this Thanksgiving.

Cease the GreaseFats, oils, and grease (FOG) poured down your kitchen drain can solidify in your pipes and cause sewage to back up into your house. Help prevent sewerblockages by following these best practices:• Don’t pour FOG down sink drains or garbage disposals. • Pour used grease into a sealable container and discard into the trash.• Scrape food from dishes and cookware into the trash before washing. • Put a strainer over the drain to catch food scraps and discard into the trash.

Wipes Clog Pipes “Disposable” products that get flushed or discarded down the drain can cause pipe blockages, leading to sanitary sewer overflows. Help keep your pipes and the city ’s sanitary sewer system clear of debris by disposing of the following items in the trash, not the toilet or drain:• Wipes – even the ones advertised as “flushable”• Needles should be disposed of in a medical sharps container, or a heavy plastic or metal container that is puncture-proof with a tight-fitting lid.• Paper towels and napkins• Diapers and personal hygiene products

Pain in the DrainDiscarding of unwanted medications down the toilet or sink is not acceptable because many medications cannot be broken down at a water reclamation facility.

OPTION 1 – Keep medication in its container and place it into a MedReturn Drug Collection Unit*at the following Glendale police stations(Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.):

• Foothills Station - 6255 W. Union Hills Dr.• Gateway Station - 6261 N. 83rd Ave. *Does not accept liquid medications or syringes.

OPTION 2 – Put medication into a sealable bag or container and mix with an undesirable substance (such as kitty litter or used coffee grounds). Dispose of it in the trash. Keep away from children and pets.

OPTION 3 – Contact your pharmacy to see if they collect unused medications.
