A Message From The Editor Peter Baldwin

Nominations For CommitteeIt is pleasing to see that we have a full complement of nominations for the various Committee positions for this Year’s Annual Meeting.

It did take a little bit of work behind the scenes to encourage some members to nominate.

I am sure that all persons who have nominated will enjoy their time working to further the interests of our Club and I look forward to another successful and enjoyable year.

Annual Report 2016/17On looking back, 2016/17 has been a varied and busy year for BMUG, with many happy occasions, but a couple of sad ones as well:• Late last year we lost Allan Collier,

who fought a long and valiant battle with diabetes. Despite eventually losing a leg to the disease, he returned to serving on the Committee, at first remotely by Skype link, but once he was able to resume driving, attended in person. Some of us remember him demonstrating his ability to pack his folding wheelchair into the front of his car, but once in the driver’s seat, he was as capable as any of us. What I particularly remember about Allan was his cheerfulness in adversity, and his refusal to quit. He left an inspiring example for us all.

• In January we lost Steve Craddock, who was a founding member of BMUG. Without his vision and contribution, our club may not have started. He played a prominent part in BMUG for many years, including the production of numerous manuals on ‘how to use’ various Mac programs.

• I want to place on record our gratitude and appreciation for the valuable contributions made by both these esteemed members.

On a happier note, we have had a varied program this year.

Beside the guest speakers - Matt Vistarini from AppTech, Anthony Caruana (Editor of MacWorld Online Magazine), and Victoria Matthews from Geelong Regional Library Service -

we have had strong support from our own members:

• Des Graham has given two presentations on using iMovie - one as an overview of what can be done with segments of footage, and a second on the ‘nuts and bolts’ of how to get it all together into a movie.

• Neil Hickman demonstrated what he does with his photography, and how he uses the computer to present his work.

• Dick Brown demonstrated how to make a Calendar ‘the quick and easy way’. In April Dick also led the annual Photo Day excursion on the Portarlington foreshore, followed by judging the competition entries, then presenting them to BMUG.

• Antoinette John made a couple of presentations, one on iPad Tips, and another as part of a demonstration of ‘Fun, or useful iPad Apps’. Other members also shared interesting iPad Apps they use.

What I have really appreciated is that we have many members who can do “something”, and their willingness to come forward and share it with everyone. This has helped relieve the burden on the faithful stalwarts of BMUG - Peter Oakley (who, despite his ‘stepping back’ this year, continues to help keep us all going), and especially Dick Brown (who is always there making sure the projector is up and running. This is in addition to the very popular fortnightly Green Apples Tutorials he holds in his own home).

On the Committee we have had:

• Peter Gason, Vice-President and minutes-taker … quietly in the background, but always there with practical help and support.

• Keerie Brown, Secretary … who has done a sterling job for a few years now, with up-to-date, very efficiently organised record-keeping, not to mention the challenge of coping with the responsibilities of annual reporting to the Dept. of Consumer Affairs.

• John Beatty, Treasurer … took on a real challenge when he became Treasurer, having never done any sort of book-keeping before. It was a steep learning curve for him, but he has risen to the task and provided very easy-to-read records for us.

• Mary-Ann Lorimer capably stepped into the role of looking after our refreshments - afternoon tea, the ‘bikky tin’ supplies, and supervising the clean-up afterwards - all more important than you realise, but often only noticed if there’s nobody there to do it.

• Antoinette John: Her main role was being responsible for the care and safe storage of BMUG equipment at the Hall. However she willingly

assisted Mary-Ann in the kitchen department, and (together with Peter Oakley) also looked after the organisation of our Christmas Party catering.

• Pam Hanson joined the Committee to fill the vacancy left by Allan Collier’s passing. She has brought another perspective, with many practical ideas and suggestions.

• Peter Oakley is always a valuable resource person, with his previous experience and knowledge of lots of ‘Mac stuff’, Mac U Tutorials, and ability to chair our Q&A segments.

Other contributors during the year have been:• Michelle MacGregor in her role as

Webmaster. She is not normally available to attend meetings as she is self-employed, and recently moved into Geelong. However, she monitors and updates our website as required, and looks after its MacHighway hosting.

Note: Should someone be interested in learning how to do this, Michelle would

Page 8: Your Mac. Elevated. · 2019-01-23 · Table of Contents BMUG News September 2017 2 The BMUG Assist program is available to all members. We will attempt to resolve your urgent Mac problems

be more than happy to show you, and to hand the job over. I understand it is not difficult - you just need to be shown what to do, and maybe ‘have your hand held’ for a bit.

• Peter Baldwin, Newsletter Editor. It is difficult to put into words just how much time and effort Peter has put into researching information of interest and assistance to members. What Peter has produced month after month for a good number of years I understand has become “one of the best Mac Group Newsletters in the whole of Australia”. While he says he has enjoyed doing this, and it has almost ‘become a hobby’ for him, the time comes when ‘enough is enough’, and he needs to wind back his endeavours. Once again, we are looking for someone else to take on the job of Newsletter Editor. We are not asking that person to present a large-volume

Newsletter, as Peter did ‘set the bar’ very high indeed. A much briefer, basic version would be quite sufficient and perfectly adequate for our needs. So, if you are able to help, please do!Following every second meeting, those who were able attended a social meal at a local restaurant, where we were able to enjoy getting to know one another better in a relaxed atmosphere.

Finally, I’d like to express appreciation to all those who have stepped up to fill vacant Committee positions for the year ahead. For a while it looked as though we might again have to contemplate winding up the club, but we are glad to announce we now have a full list of volunteers to satisfy the regulations of Victoria’s Consumer Affairs Department.

Everybody on the Committee this year has made a positive contribution, and I

thank them for their whole-hearted support of me as a novice President. As you know, I took on the role of President as a ‘last gasp’ alternative to BMUG’s closing down. Since I did recover from my unexpected stay in hospital, I thought I should ‘make myself useful’.Although there was more to the job than met my eye, thanks to everyone’s support, it has been a very happy year. I am pleased to hand over to the new President and Committee with the feeling of satisfaction that what I set out to do has been achieved, and that BMUG again survives to to benefit us all.

As you can see from the above remarks, it has taken a very good team, including ordinary members, to bring this success… may it long continue.

Thank you, one and all! Carol Wilson President

MAC OS HIGH SIERRA (V.10.13) It is considered a "maintenance release”

High Sierra is apparently considered a "maintenance release,", with lots of little improvements all over your desktop.

In line with previous naming patterns, High Sierra changes locations while not changing the theme, so this upgrade isn't considered the "big one;" e.g., Leopard, Snow Leopard and then Lion and then Mountain Lion.

We will see the new file system named Apple File System (APFS) for High Sierra in action in the new macOS. APFS is already

running in the background in the iOS 10.3 update for iPhones and iPads.

APFS supports 64-bit inode numbers, which improves upon the 32-bit file IDs currently supported by Apple’s HFS+.

What that means, in simple terms, is that APFS has the ability to carry more than 9 quintillion files on a single volume (assuming you have room for them).

Release date:Best guess end of October 2017.

Cost:Free to users who have macOS Sierra installed

What Macs are compatible with macOS High Sierra?

• MacBook Pro (2010 and later)

• MacBook (Late 2009 and later)

• MacBook Air (2010 and later)

• Mac Pro (2010 and later) • iMac (Late 2009 and later) • Mac mini (2010 and later)

With BMUG Editor PETER BALDWINQ&A

How To Show The “All My Files” Icon In The macOS Sidebar of Finder

One of the most useful features of macOS is that it lets you see your files from newest to oldest, in the “All My Files” Folder.

Question:I accidentally deleted the “All My F i l e s ” f o l d e r u n d e r F i n d e r /Favorites. Now I can’t find it! Is there any way that I can get it back?

You can re-enable special items that appear in the Sidebar via Finder Preferences.

Answer:In my opinion. the “All My Files” folder is one of the most useful features in the Finder It shows all files on your Mac, defaulting from newest to oldest. The setting for it is slightly hidden.

In the Finder, choose Finder>Preferences, and then click Sidebar. That’s where you’ll find checkboxes for all the things you can have icons for in your Sidebar. If you delete one of these special items from the Sidebar, hold down Option and drag it out, you should be able to restore it just by visiting this preference pane and checking its box. However, from advice that I have received, on some machines once the item is missing it’s persistently gone. That might mean a preferences corruption, which can sometimes be cleared by restarting. If not, you might need to reinstall the system, not from scratch, but the “install in place” option that puts all the right files back in the right place.

What is the Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner? The Flip-Pal Mobile scanner is different from any other portable scanner that I have ever tested.

Other battery-powered photo scanners with PC-free scanning that I have seen, are sheet fed, which means that you risk harming your photos, and delicate originals when you feed them through the scanner.

The Flip-Pal mobile scanner is a small, battery-powered, colour flatbed scanner designed to scan photos and documents, and even keepsake items, large and small. It scans without being connected to a computer and gives you the flexibility to scan wherever you go.

It looks like a miniaturised version of a desktop flatbed scanner, but compared to your normal 4-in-1 printer/scanner/fax or even a high quality photo

scanner, the Flip-Pal is tiny.  Measuring just 16.5cm x 26.0cm x 3.17cm, it is a small, extremely portable scanner that allows you to scan photographs and documents anywhere you choose. It is small enough to easily place in your shoulder bag or briefcase or your luggage if you are traveling.

All scans are captured on an SD card (included) which are then transferable to a computer using the enclosed SD card to USB adapter, with no cords involved.

Included on the SD card are some basic editing functions including rotating, cropping and minor colour adjustment. to make the Flip-Pal more functional.

The Flip-Pal Toolbox software also includes StoryScans (separate activation fee is required) and EasyStitch.

The Flip-Pal and its software are compatible with both PC and Mac.

It offers a built-in 4.32cm colour LCD to show your scans. You can't zoom in on

the image the way you can with most cameras to check scan quality in detail, but the LCD is big enough to show any major quality issues.

The scanner also supports, but does not come with an Eye-Fi card, which you can use to send your scans to an Android or iOS device for a better look.

Set Up:There is really nothing to set up with the Flip-Pal. It runs on four AA batteries, which come already installed. All you have to do is pull out the plastic piece that keeps the batteries from making electrical contact. There is also software on the 2GB SD card that comes with the scanner, but you run it from the card, so there is no software to install either.

The LCD and menu control buttons are to the right of the lid, with the Power button, Scan button, and SD card slot lined up along the scanner's right side. Putting the Scan button on the side may

Page 15: Your Mac. Elevated. · 2019-01-23 · Table of Contents BMUG News September 2017 2 The BMUG Assist program is available to all members. We will attempt to resolve your urgent Mac problems

BMUG News September 2017 ✦ 15

seem like a mistake at first glance, because you have to hold the scanner in place when you push the button. However there is a good reason for putting it there.

The flatbed lid is designed to come off, and the bottom of the scanner includes a window that's lined up with and the same size as the flatbed.

The two features together let you scan originals that won't fit under the lid, like photos mounted in an album. Simply snap off the lid, flip the scanner over, and put the flatbed on top of the original. Then adjust the position by looking through the window, and hit the Scan button. Because the button is on the side, it's just as easy to get at whether the scanner is upside down or right side up.

The same trick lets you scan originals that are larger than 4 by 6. Take a set of overlapping scans, looking through the window to make sure you're positioning the scanner correctly for each one, and then use the stitching software on the SD card to stitch them together later, on your computer.

Scanning:Scanning with Flip-Pal is very easy. The only scan option is resolution, with choices of 300 or 600 dpi. The 300 dpi setting is generally high enough for photos.

To scan, you position the original in the flatbed, or the scanner on the photo, and press the Scan button. As the scan proceeds, the image shows up on the LCD, so when the scanner is right-side up, you can see the scan in progress as well as the final result. You can also use the menu buttons to scroll through scans already on the card.

Scan Results:When you finish scanning, you can plug the memory card into your computer if you have an SD card slot, or you can plug the card into the supplied adaptor and then plug the adaptor into a USB port on your computer. You can then run the Flip-Pal software from the card or simply treat the card as USB memory and copy the scan files, which are in JPG format, to your computer.

If you want to do more with your photos than print, email, or archive them, then you will need to use other software, as

the SD card does not offer any other photo editing facilities.

The Flip-Pal scanner as tested, does come with the stitching tool (already mentioned) and a basic app for restoring colour to faded images (which is not as good as that provided in Apple Photos).

The stitching tool works well. I scanned a 5x7” photo, in two overlapping scans, with the stitching tool taking approximately 18 seconds to join them into one image. With an A4 size original, I needed 10 scans, with the stitching taking about 1.5 minutes.

Image quality was good enough for casual photographers, particularly considering the age and quality of the original photos.

Drawbacks:There are a few things that I don’t like about the Flip-Pal.

The first is that it is battery-powered with no way to add a power cord. It is extremely difficult to insert the batteries. The batteries (4 AA) that came with the machine lasted just over one hour (95 pictures scanned mostly at 300 dpi). I changed batteries (4 more) and in

Page 16: Your Mac. Elevated. · 2019-01-23 · Table of Contents BMUG News September 2017 2 The BMUG Assist program is available to all members. We will attempt to resolve your urgent Mac problems

a little over 2 hours I had used more than 50% of the battery power with only an additional 60 pictures scanned, all at 600 dpi. If you intend to purchase one of these scanners, then I would recommend investing in some good quality rechargeable batteries like the Eneloop batteries from Panasonic. They charge quick and last a lot longer than ordinary batteries.

Another drawback to the Flip-Pal is that when you scan a photo from, for example, a photo album page, it doesn’t automatically crop the image like some scanners do. You have to do this yourself, fairly easily in the Flip-Pal Toolbox using their editing function, or alternatively use Apple’s Photo editing facility.

The scanner does not have any depth of field. On most scanners, if you have a wrinkle in your document, or if the document is not 100% flat against the screen, it is not a problem- you will still get a reasonably sharp image. On this scanner, if a document is not absolutely 100% flat on the screen or if there is the slightest curve, fold or wrinkle, you will get a blur. This is also a problem with framed pictures.

Final Thoughts:This scanner is great for scanning lots of photos and postcards, but for books and artwork where it is is difficult to be aligned flat against the screen it does not produce a satisfactory end result. Also, it only has a small scanning field. The display and interface are a bit awkward to navigate, but once you get

used to it, everything goes smoothly, even though it is bit tedious.

The stitching logic it uses to create a single page is really amazing.

It is remarkably small, lightweight and easily portable.

Photo Quality is satisfactory, considering the condition and age of the photos that I scanned and the final result is better image quality than if I had used a smart phone.

What I like the most about the Flip-Pal is its flexibility and usefulness in a variety of situations.

It would be ideal for anyone who is trying to scan and organise a lifetime’s worth of photos and albums as well as the family historian, genealogist and scrapbooker.

Photolemur does make most photos look better with just one click, but you have no control over the results. It uses “computer science and artificial intelligence” in order to enhance your photos. Photolemur is very easy to use, and it should not take you long to explore the different options which are available. The real question is: Does Photolemur work? Based on my tests the answer is yes, with the added proviso that it does sometimes tend to be a bit too drastic compared to the one click Enhance tool which comes with mac OS photos. Photolemur certainly does not replace conventional photo editing software such as Lightroom, but it is not trying to.It aims to make quick, automated improvements to snapshots.

In my opinion, it mostly succeeds but not always. My trials would suggest that it does best with the kind of landscape shots that you will mostly see on the Photolemur website.I have not tested it with enough photos to suggest any kind of statistical guide as to its success rate, but it certainly made worthwhile improvements to the majority of my photos. Occasional results were doubtful improvements, with some resulting in more harm than good.I found the Face Retouching and Sky Enhancement to be much better than that offered in Apple photos, particularly with very old photos.

Photolemur costs $46.99 from the Mac App Store, or $44.00 direct from the developer.

You can download a free trial version here.

A family license for up to five devices is also available.

Conclusions:

For the price of $44.00, I think that it is worth purchasing. You can download a free trial with no batch feature and a watermark. If you have any doubts, try that, and you can decide for yourself.Run your photos through it and compare before and after to see those that you prefer. It is my opinion that most of the time you will prefer the after versions.

New guidelines for c r e a t i n g s t r o n g passwordsThe US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has issued new guidelines for password security that turn accepted wisdom about creating long strings of letters, numbers and symbols on its head.

DetailsNIST, a non-regulatory federal agency within the US Department of Commerce, issued the original advice in 2003 that became the global standard for password

security. But it now says the advice led people to create predictably ‘complex’ passwords in a bid to remember them, which made them more vulnerable to hackers.A former employee who has since retired said there just wasn’t enough real word data available at the time.

Staying safeKey changes in NIST’s new digital identity guidelines include:

• Don’t arbitrarily mix letters, numbers and symbols to make a password. Instead, create passwords that are more memorable.

• Single dictionary words, the user’s street address or

numeric sequences such as 1234567 should be banned.

• Organisations should screen the strength of their passwords against those used in cybercriminal dictionary attacks; a method of breaking into a password-protected computer or server by systematically entering every word in a dictionary as a password.

• Stop frequently changing passwords, for example each month, as it leads to poor passwords being created.
