The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Current Affairs Challenge was an eye-opener for me as i learnt more about the issues pertaining to Singapore and the wider society. Despite the challenges in the final round, where we were up against ACJC, HCI and RV, my team emerged 2nd runner up, and two other Millennians emerged 1st and 3rd in the individual speech category.

NORMAL - A PRODUCTION BY THE MILLENNIAN sTAge

Normal by faith Ng is a play that follows two secondary 5 students in the fictional Singaporean Trinity Secondary School, who are discriminated against for being in the Normal (Academic) stream.

This play shows what it is like to be considered academically "slow" in Singapore, and makes us acknowledge that being human is intrinsically difficult, no matter who we are. We were fortunate to have been given the opportunity to share this emotional piece on a difficult topic with the rest of the school.

On 14 July, a group of students volunteered at the Bicentennial experience as volunteer storytellers who guided visitors at various parts of the experience.

I think the experience as a volunteer has been beneficial because when we were assigned different stations, we learnt new things about singapore.

Through this VIA experience, I was able to better understand the value of responsibility as my interaction with the children at the childcare centre taught me that watching over and guiding the young children requires a lot of responsibility, especially when it comes to safety.

2019 is designated as the Year Towards Zero Waste in Singapore - to raise awareness of waste issues and to rally all singaporeans to treasure our resources and build a strong 3R (Reduce, Reuse and recycle) culture in singapore.

To support this initiative, Millennia has also adopted the same theme for our own environmental efforts. The sharing by the various speakers on earth Day emphasised the dire need for change and how every little bit of effort from us can go a long way. So, let us work together to make our environment and future a better one by going Towards Zero Waste.

CELEBRATING OUR MI JOURNEY

This year’s Institute Day, which was held on 27 April 2019, celebrated MI’s 16th year and showcased the Millennian Mettle. our mettle is forged out of inspiring stories of past and present Millennians who remained resilient in face of setbacks to achieve success. These heart-warming stories were told and displayed at MI’s Art Gallery for guests and students to view.

The event commenced with the entrance arrival of the guest of Honour, Mr Eric Tan Huck Gin, Director (Institutional Development) of the Amaravati Partnership Office, Ministry of Trade and Industry. MI’s Angklung kulintang Ensemble, which had clinched the SYF Distinction this year, then performed beautifully, starting the event off on a wonderful note.

After the rousing performance, our Principal, Mrs Tan, presented the Institute Report, recounting the many successes achieved by past and present Millennians. Mrs Tan spoke of the Millennian experience which spanned various school activities, community involvement programmes, and leadership training programmes that provided students with a platform to prove their mettle. Their achievements throughout the years are evidence of MI’s unwavering spirit. In his speech, Mr Eric Tan, extended the theme of 'Mettle' by sharing his inspiring personal life experience.

other than the recognition of the fortitude displayed by the students of MI, the teachers’ unrelenting hard work and patience in teaching were also recognised with various service awards. The

audience applauded and cheered for their teachers as they went on stage to receive the awards. Additionally, academic awards were presented to our talented schoolmates and graduates, and non-academic awards were given to commend graduates who excelled in other areas, such as community service or sport, while juggling their A level studies at the same time.

Before the event ended, MI’s Malay dancers graced the hall with their impressive performance that earned them the syf Distinction award this year. Then, an outstanding graduate of MI, This year’s valedictorian, Mukundan Malaiyamaran, who was the Captain of MI’s Football Boys in 2018, delivered an inspiring speech that inspired fellow students. he shared with the audience a few anecdotes of his time on the field with the Football Team (Boys) and ended by emphasising that, “It’s about the journey rather than the destination”.

As we witnessed and celebrated our schoolmates’ MI journey on Institute Day, we acknowledged the time, hard work, and sacrifice

that they put in to achievement their goals. We can all learn something from watching our schoolmates persevere despite the challenges they faced. With that, let’s all be supportive of one another’s hard work so that we can all achieve success together as Millennians.

MI - A PLACE OF VENTURE: INTERVIEW WITH EBENEZER LOY (17C2)

A venture is a risky or daring undertaking, but stepping out of one’s comfort zone can also be greatly rewarding. In this issue of MI insight, we speak to Ebenezer Loy who treads a path that few dare to tread at such a young age.

Q: Why did you decide to become a business owner at such a young age?

A: I think my desire to run a business stemmed from my personal family struggles. In 2003, my father suffered a debilitating stroke which left my mother with no choice but to become the sole breadwinner. Our relatives could only do so much to support us, and for years I grappled with feelings of inadequacy because I was financially less well-off compared to my peers. Through most of my early school years, I could not afford the same luxuries as my friends and struggled to understand why.

However, in 2016, I realised that if I possessed a strong financial foundation, I would have the freedom to do so much more for myself and my family. And so I worked and fought hard to achieve my goal of financial security.

Q: Being an A Level student whilst simultaneously juggling that many companies is no easy feat. What are some of the challenges you face while trying to cope with both your studies and your career?

A: Of course, effective time management is immensely difficult. As a boss and a student, I am expected to complete my schoolwork and fulfil my commitments to my businesses at the same time. This means that I rarely get the chance to enjoy a hearty breakfast, and often find myself having exceptionally late lunches and dinners. The workload is certainly overwhelming, and attempting to explain my position to my subject tutors is not always met with sympathy. The most difficult struggle is really finding balance between my work and personal life; proper rest is difficult to come by.

I am thankful for my peers who are understanding whenever I miss their calls, or even when the stress causes me to lose my temper.

Ultimately, although much of this takes a mental and physical toll on me, I always manage to find the grit to push through and embrace the challenge.

Q: What inspires you to continue with your businesses despite all the challenges?

i never gave up on my passion because i believe in myself. if the world assumes you are not good enough, you need to do what you can to prove people wrong.

I also find joy in seeing the smiles my companies bring to the faces of our customers and clients. positive feedback inspires me to do more, to do better, and to be the best that I can be.

And at the end of the day, I really just want to make my mum proud of me.

Q: Considering you have a thriving businesses, why do you still want to pursue an A-Level certification?

A: I pursue the A-Levels because of my mum, who has raised my brother and I single-handedly since 2003, and whom I love dearly. i remember how she would encourage me to do my best in my academics and athletics. she really wants us to qualify for degrees at the end of our schooling journey.

Another reason is to further my credibility. i believe that by enrolling in MI’s A-Level Commerce course, I have a fighting chance to attain a university degree in business, which improves my credentials as a young entrepreneur.

Q: What are some lessons you have learnt from being a business owner?

A: Although some may find it a cliché, relentless determination and passion are important. Because I love what I do, I never consider my responsibilities a tedious chore.

Additionally, efficiency is paramount when running a business, and profit is the ultimate gauge of whether you should continue investing in a particular endeavour. Having said that, another important lesson is to never underestimate how rewarding kindness can be. When investing in a business, you should never go into a negotiations with an uncooperative and ruthless mindset. people have a greater appreciation for generosity – partners who espouse the merits of mutual benefit and willingly go the extra mile to ascertain such conditions are often handsomely rewarded.

INTERVIEW WITH MS. CHUANG XIN SULYNN

First off, an introduction to the surfski is in order. A surfski is a long, narrow and lightweight craft similar to a kayak but with an open “sit-on-top” (SOT) cockpit and a self-bailer to eliminate water, instead of the enclosed kayak-style cockpit which can be sealed against the elements. surfskis are primarily designed for speed, like fast runs on the open seas. They are used worldwide for surf lifesaving, wave surfing, and for training and competition on flat-water or ocean racing. They are most popular in warmer coastal regions such as Australia, California, Hawaii, and South Africa.

Q: When did you discover your interest in surfski?

I was part of my JC’s flatwater kayaking team, so that’s where I got started. i actually took a break from kayaking in university and tried out other sports like long distance running and dragon boat. But one day at Pasir Ris, a friend let me borrow his canoe to paddle in and that experience reminded me of how much i liked kayaking. i haven’t stopped since.

MI in ConversationQ: What is your most memorable experience in surfski?

Once, I was paddling around St. John’s Island and came across what looked like an ugly floating coconut. It turned out to be a sea turtle coming up for air. (Turtles are my favourite animal, so i was totally in awe.) it watched my kayak glide closer before it dived underwater and vanished from sight. i’ve always tried to pick up trash in the ocean when paddling since then, to protect the turtles. singapore actually has a lot of beautiful wildlife and it is worth protecting.Q: What are the costs or constraints of surfski? Have you sacrificed anything for it?

some of the downsides of ocean kayaking include always having odd tan lines and callused hands. Also, because it is a physically demanding sport, I often have sore muscles after a tough training session. And, I do have to sacrifice sleeping in during the weekends; but that’s what afternoon naps are for.

Q: What is one tip you would give to anyone interested in surfski?

Be sure to wear protective gear, especially tights, so as to prevent chafing!

Q: Can you relate your passion for surfski to teaching?

ocean kayaking keeps me humble because even though i’m a teacher at work, I’m always a student when I’m in the ocean. I’m always learning something new about myself, or the ocean, or my kayak. it helps to remind me to be kind to my students when they’re struggling (like how i also struggle when i’m stuck in strong currents) and also to never give up. Just keep paddling!

'EU COMES TO YOUR SCHOOL' PROJECT

The inaugural 'European Union (EU) Comes to Your School' Project, from 14 to 27 May, provided Singapore schools with the opportunity to learn more about the eU and its relations with Singapore. Millennia Institute (MI) was privileged to have the opportunity to be part of this project.

At the kick-off event held at the Ministry of Education Language Centre, I had the chance to interact with my peers from other junior colleges, some of whom take a third language at the A-Levels like H2 German. My interaction with them inspired me to pick up a third language in the near future.

During the event, the panel of EU ambassadors stressed the importance of foreign language proficiency, and emphasised that it was a worthwhile investment of time due to the advantages it brings in a globalised world. languages will give singaporeans access to more universities, jobs and networks for economic opportunities. Additionally, the panel of EU ambassadors also helped me better understand the current geopolitical realities of the world that we live in. They added that an awareness of global situations makes us knowledgeable and better able to appreciate different cultures.

As part of the project, MI hosted Her Excellency Dorte Bech Vizard, the Danish Ambassador to Singapore, for a dialogue session with the PU3 students. We also hosted the former Ambassador, Mr A. Selverajah from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for a dialogue on Singapore’s foreign policy with the PU1 students, and the Ambassador of Ukraine to Singapore, His Excellency Dmytro Senik, for a dialogue session with all students.

Being selected to be the student moderator for the pU3 dialogue session was a humbling and thrilling experience especially because of my interest in politics and international diplomacy. her excellency answered a spectrum of questions ranging from technological advancements to renewable energy. she also shared that Denmark is at the forefront of advocating work-life balance. And yes, she prefers Laksa over Chicken Rice!

it was an enriching experience for me as i am sure it was for all Millennians and we look forward to future eye-opening dialogues!

MI in ServiceSBS TRANSIT kINDNESS DAY

The SBS Transit kindness Day project was an opportunity that presented itself to our group when we were looking for VIA projects to initiate. it was a good chance for us to show our appreciation towards the people we see every day on our travels, but often overlook.

We quickly brainstormed ideas and decided to collect thank you notes to make a giant thank you card for the SBS staff. However, we were worried that we might not be able to gather many thank you notes from the student body. To our surprise, many students and staff wrote thank you notes!

After collecting the notes and putting the finishing touches on our large thank you card, we went to Beauty World MRT station to present our gift to the staff. The staff shared with us that little things, like our thank you notes and seeing passengers smile,

make them feel accomplished. They wanted to thank members of the public and had prepared tokens of appreciation. So, in the spirit of giving back to the community, we helped the staff hand out their gifts to members of the public.

Overall, the experience was an enriching one. We had the opportunity to out ourselves in the shoes of the sBs Transit staff to better understand their challenges. We also learnt that kindness comes in all forms, big and small. So, we would like to urge all Millennians: Let us continue to show appreciation for and be kind to one another!

MI: In Our JourneyMI.WORLD VIETNAM: LEARNING ABOUT SINGAPORE'S BILATERAL RELATIONSHIP WITH VIETNAM

In the first week of June, our team of 26 Millennian students embarked on a MI.World trip to Vietnam. As someone who is not well-travelled, I was not sure what to expect, but the experience exceeded my expectations and was truly eye-opening.

Throughout the trip, our tour guide passionately told us about the background and history of his country. Through his eyes, we were able to gain more insight into Vietnam, also known as “The

Shining Star”. We visited many museums and learnt many things, in particular, we learnt about the Vietnam War. This allowed history students to have a deeper appreciation for what we are currently learning in our textbooks. The non-history students were also able to increase their knowledge of our AseAN ally.

We also learned about the different villages in Vietnam, and visited a village known for producing clay, aptly named, the Clay Village. There we were able to paint and bring home ready-made clay sculptures as souvenirs.

“”

Their persistence and perseverance ... also truly show their strong desire to succeed...

16 @MI Your Life Starts Here!

Page 17: Your Life StartS Here - Millennia Institute...of my early school years, I could not afford the same luxuries as my friends and struggled to understand why. However, in 2016, I realised

Additionally, the teachers had assigned us projects, and these along with the daily reflections made our Vietnam experience not only enjoyable, but also educational as we shared our observations and thoughts. one of the highlights of the trip was our visit to the embassy of the republic of singapore and the dialogue session with singapore’s Ambassador to the socialist Republic of Vietnam, Ms Catherine Wong Siow Ping. Through our conversation with her, we gained valuable insight into the bilateral relationship between Singapore and Vietnam.

In conclusion, I would like to say that Vietnam there is more to Vietnam than meets the eye. On the surface, it looks rundown and less than clean, but under the grimy veneer lies a diamond in the rough. Vietnam has many successful businesses, it has

a resilient and optimistic population where the people thrive despite their difficult situation. When we were there, we noticed many Vietnamese selling goods to tourists, or setting up small food stalls catering to the locals, and this demonstrates to us their tenacity and strong desire to succeed. Additionally, the patience and consideration they have, as observed in the chaotic streets, is something I find quite applaudable. So, although Vietnam is still a developing country, it is apparent after five days in Vietnam that its citizens’ strive for the best. This is why singaporeans and Millennians should not overlook them, but continue to learn from them.

Page 18: Your Life StartS Here - Millennia Institute...of my early school years, I could not afford the same luxuries as my friends and struggled to understand why. However, in 2016, I realised

It was an hour after midnight, and the rain had abated.

My shoes bedewed with rainwater as I stepped into a puddle. I entered the alleyway on my way back home. All around me, shops were closed and doors were shut, and the red paint on the walls had worn off from the rain, revealing shades of grey. I stared at the ground in sadness, my shoes tapping on the wet concrete floor. The cries from the crows created a cacophony that echoed throughout the neighbourhood. My phone did not ring with notifications or calls. It was like any other day. Nothing around me but the monochrome landscape and the gloomy cold.

As I continued walking towards the end of the alleyway, I turned to look at the one of the shops’ windows and saw my despondent reflection. Slowly, my reflection started to smile back at me. Despite the absurdity of the situation, it felt strangely natural.

“Stop putting on a fake bravado!” my reflection mocked me as her grin widened, “You’re weak! No one will ever love you. Even your father abandoned you.”

I continued shuffling forwards and hung my head low. She followed but her head was held up high as if to tell me that i should be like her, a better version of myself: proud, cocky, rude. The wind brushed through my hair and similarly, her long hair flowed in the wind.

“Can’t fit in? Can’t assimilate? Of course you can’t, you’re nothing but an interloper!” her hostile words pierced through my heart. I stopped and stared at the concrete floor riddled with cracks as I thought about what she said.

“You’re right, I’m nothing more than an annoyance to everyone around me. i’m nothing but an outsider…”

Suddenly, a voice behind me interrupted my mirror image. i turned behind to see my reserved shadow transform into an intrepid figure.

The shadow spoke, “Hey, kim, cheer up. Sure, you may think you are nothing now, but that does not mean you cannot grow and learn and make friends. All you have to do is to pretend”

The crows had left, and the sudden silence made the figments of my imagination seem louder. i covered my ears and closed my eyes, trying to shut them out but their words continued to cut, harsher and stronger.

“Go away! You’re not real, you guys are just hallucinations!”

But, I could still hear them.

“Dude, fake a personality or something, no one has to know you’re a freak,” My shadow drawled. “There’s nothing wrong with covering your life with lies.”

“Fallacious! What buffoon would choose to believe those lies?” my reflection hissed back. “You are an aberration and the epitome of worthlessness. There is nothing you can do to change that!”

I could not take it anymore. While the two adversaries bickered with each other and jeered at me, I ran towards the end of the alley to get away from them. everything was dark but i could see the light at the end gleaming brighter every second.

Then, the alley opened up to the main street and I came to a halt. The light above me was luminous. My reflection and shadow stilled and everything went silent for a moment.

The alluring light above me came from the moon. Like me, the moon was alone in the dark. “But how are you able to shine so bright?” I wondered as I looked up. Then it hit me and I realized the answer.

i turned back with new resolve and looked at my image in the window, fixing me with her beady eye and standing with her arms akimbo.

Mustering up my courage I said, “No, maybe you’re wrong. Perhaps, I am somebody. If I try to get rid of dark thoughts like you, I might be able to be great. No, like the lonely moon, I will shine even more brightly because of the darkness.”

I looked at my shadow on the ground and said, “I don’t need to create a facade for people to like me. i don’t need to mask my loneliness. Like the moon, maybe if I believe in myself, I might shine brighter.”

In an instant, they were gone and my shadow and reflection returned to normal and i continued my walk home.

i smiled because i realised that i was looking at my loneliness the wrong way. i enjoy being alone. i enjoy being with myself and there is nothing wrong with that.

PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY 1

Vultures circle the air, peeping from branches. Cock eyed, spilling tongue, scythes for teeth. A child in a dessert whimpers.

The photographer encapsulatespermanent pain. Will reaches her rattling arms grappling the colossal sandpaper the tree sips.

The veiny twigs attached to her torso kicks the scorching sand her beri-beri tummy hindering move-ment.

Crawling short, trying to escape death she burrows into his mindfilling its shape. Cries, groans to a hush shutters close on her face.

Hunger raging, spreading wings rotten flesh clinging on every barb of feather trophies of past despair a deathly choir.Stalking, rasping, hissing lusting, feasting.

As the shutter shuts, so does his heart. Haunting terror of a world, aslant. her bulbous eyeballs piercing the dark.

Him too, slowly gnawed off scavenging on his despair. In his dessert, perched on his car. Finally spent with a deathly stench, fills to grab-rip his lungs.

Slowly closing on his face, a final attempt to crawl out of his mind, exalted by the world.

Page 20: Your Life StartS Here - Millennia Institute...of my early school years, I could not afford the same luxuries as my friends and struggled to understand why. However, in 2016, I realised

A leader’s role is more than just instructing a group of people - it is also to be a role model and a source of motivation for his teammates. After being elected, my main objective is to win the house championship again.

it was a challenge to decide on a product that was interesting and easy to sell to students and teachers for the social Bazaar. Despite that, I hope that i played my part in contributing and making a significant donation to our beneficiaries.

Hmmm... What do I like the most about the library? I look forward to meeting the students who come to the library. Come and say hi to me if you visit the library!

i am always delighted and proud of the students during Values-In-Action (VIA) day. They go from not knowing how to talk to our beneficiaries to stepping up to the challenge and out of their comfort zones. They even improvise activities for the beneficiaries on the spot!

Although volunteering for Institute Day was tiring, it was a good opportunity for us as year 1s to grow as it was a completely new experience for us!

As a committee member of my class VIA team, I felt a mix of emotions. i was worried and stressed as the class was outnumbered by the beneficiaries. But overall, i am glad and thankful that the day turned out fine and that the elderly appreciated and enjoyed our company.

As first year students in MI’s Aungklung kulintang ensemble playing angklung for the first time, we felt the pressure from the past syf distinctions. However, the teachers and conductors were nice to us, despite us having no music background,. We thought we could not get the distinction but we got it, and that accomplishment felt like the biggest success.

one of my favourite moments in MI would be interacting with my friends during breaks and studying with them after school. They are a source of motivation for me!

I would like Millennians to view each challenge or struggle as an opportunity to learn and grow. The most important thing is to put your best effort into whatever you do. learn from experience and try to do it better. have faith.

Being a leader means being able to earn respect from the members and working together as a team, making sure that everyone feels equally seen and heard. i wish to cultivate a culture of care in my CCA, where dancers are disciplined and will look out for each other.
