Experience a truly urban university. Immerse yourself in ideas.
Grad Life
CityToronto is Canada’s largest, most vibrant city, and having overtaken Chicago as 4th largest in North America, trails only Mexico City, New York and Los Angeles. It’s also one of the most diverse cities in the world, with 50% of its population born outside of Canada. Toronto was named the 2014 Intelligent Community of the Year and ranked as the most resilient city in the world by Grosvenor.
Ryerson is not just nestled within this context like many other urban universities in North America; it is interwoven into the very fabric of the city’s urban core. It is integrated within a neighbourhood that is defined by world-class restaurants, shopping, sports, theatre and performing arts venues, and is connected to centres of media, technology, finance, politics and health care.
SpacesYou’ll find award-winning facilities integrated into the Ryerson campus that you just won’t find anywhere else:
Mattamy Athletic Centre at the GardensIf you grew up in Toronto, you might have experienced an NHL game at the famed Maple Leaf Gardens, one of the most iconic buildings in Canada. After the Maple Leafs moved on, Ryerson University — in partnership with Loblaw — transformed the former hockey arena into a unique facility featuring an NHL-sized hockey rink, basketball court and fitness centre.
Image Arts Building and Ryerson Image CentreYour first experience of this building, if at night, would be its pulsating colours lighting up Gould Street. Inside, it’s an international centre of excellence dedicated to the exhibition, research, study and teaching of photography, new media, installation art, film and related disciplines. It’s a truly special space where images can transform your perspective and thinking.
Student Learning CentreDesigned by Snøhetta (designers of the 9/11 Memorial and Times Square reconstruction) and Zeidler Partnership Architects (designers of the nearby Toronto Eaton Centre and Ontario Place), the iconic new Student Learning Centre (SLC) will open in 2015. It will house a variety of student services — including the Digital Media Zone, collaboration spaces and a graduate student study area — with a bridge to the Library. The SLC will be a place to share ideas, connect with others and explore the newest modes of learning.
Zone Learning
Ryerson is a pioneer in Zone Learning, where each Zone is an ecosystem of multidisciplinary, entrepreneurial and experiential learning. As a graduate student, you can apply to be part of one or more of these Zones and transform the way you think and create in your chosen area of study. Centre for Urban Energy (CUE) is a partnership between the university and industry to explore solutions to one of the great challenges of our century: urban energy. Design Fabrication Zone (DFZ) leverages design thinking and 3D production techniques to foster business innovation.
Fashion Zone is an incubator and accelerator for fashion-inspired businesses and those wishing to apply fashion thinking to other industries.
RTA Transmedia Centre is about telling stories in new ways, exploring new, digital media and the future of content.
Social Ventures Zone helps social innovators take their ideas to the next level, creating change by developing sustainable and viable initiatives.
The Digital Media Zone (DMZ) is Canada’s largest community of innovative startups, ranked first in Canada and fifth in the world by the University Business Incubator Index.
EngagementGRADCafe is an informal social network that engages graduate students, giving them the opportunity to shape their experience at Ryerson.
Orientation happens in late August; come to campus to meet with faculty and get the information you’ll need for the coming year, including an introduction to your program, the Library and an overview of funding sources and academic integrity principles.
International Learning
Toronto is one of the most dynamic and diverse cities in the world, but don’t feel limited by its boundaries. We offer international learning opportunities through dual-degree master’s programs and cotutelles for PhD students.
EnrichmentFuture Smart: Essential Professional Skills for Graduates program gives grad students the tools needed to successfully transition into their careers.
Professional Development in Teaching Program, offered through the Learning and Teaching Office, is an initiative designed to help you develop as a mentor and leader.
