Membership
All enrolled students are automatically
members of the Library – therefore you do
not need to do anything to join – the ‘P’
number on your student card is your Library
number. You will be emailed a Library PIN
for renewing loans and making reservations.
You can use any Library on any site,
although some of the books might be
course specific.
Remember successful Library users tend to
become successful students – this includes
making good use of electronic resources
which are accessible 24/7 online and on the
move. Library staff will help you get to know
how to get the best out of everything we
provide.
Library website
Much of what you need to know about
using the Library can be found on the
Library website uwl.ac.uk/library
We recommend that you get into the habit
of using this website regularly, as this will be
important when it’s time for you to prepare
your assignments.

Where are the UWL Libraries?
Paul Hamlyn Library – St Marys Road
The new Paul Hamlyn library is located
in the heart space of the St Marys Road
campus.
It is spread over 3 floors with dedicated
areas for silent, group and individual study
spaces and areas with PC workstations. For
up to date opening times, please refer to our
webpage which can be found at www.uwl.
ac.uk/library.
How do I get there?
The UWL shuttle bus stops on Haven Green
which is opposite Ealing Broadway Station
and then takes around 5 minutes to the St
Mary’s Road campus dependent on traffic.
The St Marys Road campus is a 15 minute
walk from Ealing Broadway station which is
connected by the Central/District lines and
by overground trains to and from London
Paddington and Reading.
The campus is a 10 minute walk from South
Ealing station which is connected by the
Piccadilly line.
Alternatively you can park at the public
car park which is located at the Ealing
Broadway shopping centre or the Glade
car park just before Haven Green, at the
displayed rates.

How to borrow, return and
reserve a book
Use your Library card to self-issue books you
want to borrow – most students are allowed
to borrow 10 items at any time and books
are usually issued for one or three weeks.
You can reserve books from any site either
online or in person in the Library and these
can also be collected from a different site if
required.
Books can be returned at either site via our
self-service machines or you can use the
self-service returns machine located on the
second floor in the social learning space at
Paragon House and then drop them in the
adjacent book bin.
Reading Site – Berkshire Institute for
Health
The Berkshire Institute for Health Library
holds resources for Nursing and Midwifery
students based in Reading. There are also
computers for access to electronic resources
and information, as well as support for
using these. Requests for books located at
our main Ealing Library can be made via
the catalogue for collection at Reading and
returned there.
How do I get there?
The Library is located at our site in Fountain
House, which is above the Broad Street
Mall in Reading town centre, about 5-10
minutes’ walk from the main railway station.
There is no dedicated parking at Fountain
House, but parking is available nearby at
commercial rates, or at a flat reduced rate in
Garrard Street car park near the station.

Remember!
Students in the Aspire scheme should use
their Aspire card to purchase core texts as
the Library won’t necessarily have enough
copies for everyone at the time you need
them.

Use the Library website for the following:
Catalogue
Summon – this is the Library search
engine
e-Resources – e-books, databases and

What can an Academic
Support Librarian do for me?
Your Librarian can help you to trace, access
and use the most relevant academic
resources for your course, using a balance
of print, online and audio-visual materials.
They can provide information literacy and
skills training (eg. in using online databases,
in researching or referencing resources for
your project or dissertation), for groups or
individuals, by arrangement with tutors or
by appointment with individual students.
Your Librarian can also advise you on
matters such as avoiding plagiarism and
copyright issues.

UWLReadingLists
UWLReadingLists allows you to access your
module reading list electronically, with every
resource in the list linking to the library
catalogue or straight to the e-resource for
you to read. This makes it quick and easy for
you to access the suggested reading from
your lecturer.
You can search for your reading list by
course name, module name or module
code here http://resourcelists.uwl.ac.uk/ or
you can find a link on your module page on
BlackBoard.
