What is Sheltered Housing? Our sheltered housing schemes are small communities of self-contained flats and bungalows specially designed with the needs of older, disabled and vulnerable people in mind.

Each scheme is overseen by a fully trained Sheltered/Support Officer, who is able to provide help and support when needed.

Sheltered Housing is ideal for older people or for those with disabilities who want to maintain their independence with the added peace of mind that comes from in-built support. Most schemes offer social activities that you can take part in, from outings to gardening clubs, exercise classes to bingo.

Health and Safety checks are carried out on every scheme. This includes fire system testing, reporting any issues, liaising with contractors about asbestos issues, noting and reporting any asbestos concerns, making sure community rooms are clean and all corridors/doors are free from clutter/rubbish. Sheltered/Support Officers will make sure that you and any other people that use the community room are aware of the fire procedure and assembly points and if present act as the responsible person, or appoint a responsible person.

We have schemes in most residential areas of Shrewsbury as well as Bomere Heath, Condover, Bayston Hill, Minsterley, Cross Houses, Hanwood, Pontesbury and Ford.

Support ServicesWhen you move into a sheltered scheme you will receive a support service appropriate for your needs.

Our team of Sheltered/Support Officers look after the 18 sheltered schemes owned and managed by Severnside.

Alarm services are available or other systems such as OKEachDay. Your Sheltered/Support Officer can advise you according to your needs.

Your Sheltered/Support Officer will monitor your health and wellbeing, signpost you to external agencies when appropriate, provide help and advice with tenancy issues, report repairs, deal with correspondence and assist with resident consultation.

We aim to assist you to live independently, with a sense of community and companionship, whilst knowing that help is close at hand if you need it.

What help can Sheltered/Support Officers provide? When you move into a sheltered housing scheme, your Sheltered/Support Officer will spend time with you to welcome you to your home, explain things such as the alarm system, heating and services provided to the scheme, such as visiting library services, refuse collection and recycling opportunities.

We will also introduce you to your neighbours and community functions if you wish.

The information you give us is confidential, however, in some situations it may be necessary to talk to other external agencies about you or your care.

If we do need to pass on information about you to other people, we will always try to tell you first to explain why we need to talk to someone else and to talk about information that is only directly relevant to the situation we are concerned about.

Your Sheltered/Support Officer has a master key to all properties within the scheme, to ensure your property can be entered in the event of an emergency.
