Dear Year 12 parents

At the commencement of every year we hold an important meeting with all Year 12 boys and their parents.

I write to invite you to this year’s meeting, which is scheduled to take place on Friday 3 February commencing at 6.00pm in the Auditorium of the John Inverarity Music and Drama Centre. An additional meeting for the benefit of boarders and their parents, who may not be able to attend the meeting on 3 February, will be held on Monday 30 January at 5.00pm in the Lecture Theatre of the Administration Centre. Any day boy and his parents may attend this additional meeting if they are unable to attend the meeting on Friday 3 February. An RSVP from day boys and their parents who intend to take up this option is requested to be sent to Mrs Sarah Hornsey, [email protected].

I will talk about the challenges of and some strategies for Year 12, both inside and outside the classroom, as well as providing information relating to School Curriculum & Standards Authority (SCSA) requirements and Year 12 courses of study.

A great deal of relevant information will be conveyed at these meetings as there is a need for a strong and positive start to the year to be made. This will require a team effort from boys, parents and staff.

The meeting is likely to last about one hour. Boys attending the meeting on Friday 3 February are required to wear formal summer school uniform.

Following the boarders’ meeting on 30 January, parents are invited to attend the annual Sundowner, organised by the Parents’ & Friends’ Association, commencing at 6.00pm. This function will take place in the Senior School Quadrangle.

We look forward to seeing you on either 30 January or 3 February.

With best wishes,

David Bean

Dear Year 9 parents,

With the introduction of the Middle School at Hale, the boys’ journey through the School has hopefully become less daunting as the steps have become more gradual. However, there is no doubt the transition from Year 8 to Year 9 has taken on greater importance as the boys move from the Middle School to the Senior School. Although they know the physical layout of much of the Senior School, there are new routines and procedures, different expectations concerning their maturity and development and a new stage of pastoral care provision. It can be unnerving; it is our aim to make it exciting!

I write to highlight two events to help make the transition into the Senior School as smooth as possible for your son.

YEAR 9 INDUCTION DAY: MONDAY 30 JANUARY, 8.30AM - 12.00NOONThe half day is designed for the boys to reacquaint with their classmates, ensure they are aware of the physical spaces and routines of the Senior School, set goals for the year as well as have some fun with House Prefects in organised co-operative games.

The boys meet in the Senior School Quad at 8.25am wearing their physical education uniform and house sport shirt, including sport shoes and their own morning tea.

I suggest they bring some of their books and stationery so they have less to carry the following day. They will be allocated their locker and lock so they can secure these belongings and make the first day in ‘the big school’ the following day a little less daunting as they will have a base from where to start the day.

Boarding families will be provided with information separately from the Head of Boarding, Mr Mark Walsh regarding details of returning to the Boarding House. A boarding orientation programme is planned for the start of the year as the boys move from Brine House to the senior boarding house.

YEAR 9 DAY BOY PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT: THURSDAY 2 FEBRUARY, 6.00PM - 7.00PM, JOHN INVERARITY MUSIC & DRAMA CENTREAll parents are invited to the information evening where you will meet your son’s Assistant Head of House who is the conduit for any issues or questions you have throughout the year. The boys do not need to attend the information evening.

The format of the evening will be as follows:

6.00pm - 6.30pm: Presentations on ‘The Transition to Year 9 – expectations, routines and opportunities’, ‘Cyber safety – let’s work together’ and ‘The Pastoral Care Programme in Year 9’.

6.30pm - 7.00pm: Meeting in house groups with each Assistant Head of House.

We continually stress the need for a strong partnership between school and home and this evening will be an ideal way for parents to meet their son’s pastoral care contact person as they enter the Senior School. It will also provide parents with the opportunity to ask questions regarding routines, procedures and expectations for boys in Year 9.

There are no expectations that boarding parents attend the evening, although they are most welcome. All information covered on the evening will be included in other boarding orientation events. I hope you will make every effort to attend this important meeting; there is no need to RSVP. I look forward to welcoming you to the Senior School.

Regards,

Ross Barron

16 January 2017

Dear parents,

Greetings to all Middle School families, I trust that you all had a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas break. Welcome to the new academic year, especially those families entering the Middle School for the first time.

In the Middle School we are a close-knit community that values and nurtures the relationship among teachers, parents and students. Each year we review and improve our curriculum and we are excited by the academic opportunities that will be offered this year. Our vision is clear and simple: we want to bring out the best in each student academically and socially; as scholars, athletes, artists, writers, musicians and honourable citizens.

We believe that quality education depends on several factors: an excellent curriculum; students who are motivated to learn; a dedicated, professional staff; an air of mutual respect and affirmation between students and teachers; and first rate facilities and resources. We also understand that a quality institution depends on a supportive and enthusiastic base of parents. As such, the School cultivates excellence internally and embraces our external community as well. The continued trust and loyalty of constituents are critical to the continued health and vitality of the Middle School and we thank you for your ongoing support.

This correspondence will focus primarily on providing you with logistical information to assist with the beginning of the year. While many topics are covered, particular questions might arise in the early weeks. In these cases please contact Middle School administration or your son’s Pastoral Care Leader.

Once again I warmly welcome you to the new academic year. I am confident that we will provide the students with a rewarding and memorable journey through the Middle School. I look forward to a very enjoyable and productive year!

Kind regards,

Andrew Manley

We do ask that you respect the 8.30am start time and bid farewell to your son. The Junior School will gather at 10.00am for assembly.

The demands of the 21st Century now require students to graduate from school with the ability to understand complex phenomena, analyse and synthesise multiple sources of information and build and disseminate new knowledge. The School’s philosophy of teaching and learning recognises this and one of its core values encourages a lifelong passion for creativity, innovation and learning. The philosophy encourages students to embrace a range of relevant technologies and for teachers to focus on learning skills that help boys develop the habits and behaviours of independent, creative and critical thinkers. The 1:1 computer programme is recognised as an effective means to support such a teaching and learning philosophy.

Personal computers have facilitated active engagement in learning, with students having access to learning activities which:

• are more interactive and experiential; • cater for different learning preferences; • incorporate thinking skills at all stages of the curriculum; and • are media rich, incorporating differing sensory modes.

Hale School’s 1:1 computer programme has been nurtured for over a decade and continues to incorporate best practice ideas and solutions from around the world. Important decisions on the devices and software to use at different year levels are made by the Education Technology Task Group. This group is comprised of representatives from the various sub-schools, including the Director of Information and Learning Technologies, Director of Teaching and Learning and the Headmaster. Bulk purchasing arrangements and special educational pricing are employed where possible and we constantly balance quality and features against cost.

Individual student computers add a powerful tool into the teaching and learning environment but it is important to remember that as with other readily available teaching tools (pens, pencils, textbooks, maps, and calculators), quality learning requires well-prepared lesson plans that engage and challenge the students. Hence, investing in teachers with deep content knowledge and the ability to build strong, positive relationships with the boys is a high priority for the School.

Our experience has highlighted that parents are often concerned about their son’s technology use and rightfully so. A deterioration in handwriting skills is one perceived concern and Hale School will always endeavour to maintain a balanced view towards technology use and ensure that the skills required for the WACE examinations are maintained. Students will still be required to undertake a considerable amount of handwriting in preparation for examinations. Some parents experience a sense of detachment or alienation from their child’s learning as a result of technology; others believe that their child may be spending excessive or frivolous time on their computer. We acknowledge these real challenges and continue to work with parents to help them engage in their son’s learning and technology use. Our underlying principle of use of the notebook computers is for educational purposes only and we do not allow computer games to be installed or played on campus.

Years 1 - 2The students in Years 1 - 2 have an individually assigned iPad that belongs to the school and stays on campus, plus access to a variety of Windows-based computers. These years are characterised by the gradual and well considered introduction of technology. Technology use is very specific and complements traditional teaching methods.

Years 3 - 6The students in Years 3 - 6 have an individually assigned notebook computer that belongs to the school and stays on campus, alleviating any concerns parents might have with regard to transport and home use of such a device by a relatively young student. The devices have a relatively small footprint and are ideally suited to the size of desks in the Junior School. Junior School students engage in digital citizenship content at all levels and are gradually introduced to the School’s software suite. This occurs in an ethical and socially responsible educative framework and provides an ideal basis for future technology use.

Years 7 - 12 All students in Years 7 - 12 are required to have a school computer with associated software, warranty and insurance cover. The School has a long history of Windows-based computer and server technology and Windows remains our preferred operating environment. However, specialist areas such as Junior Primary, Music, Design and Technology, and Drama make use of Apple software and hardware. The service and support model ensures minimal disruption to learning with turnaround times on student computer repairs rarely exceeding 24 hours and the cost to parents for accidental damage or theft claims capped at $100 per claim.

In Years 7 - 9 a lightweight tablet PC is used. This device is financed through an annual technology levy over three years. A tablet PC, like this year’s Surface Pro 4, offers the versatility of operating as a regular notebook computer as well as a tablet device- utilising a specially designed stylus pen for input. Students make use of its features for annotation, collaboration, organisation and presentation. Students at these year levels are gradually introduced to Guided Inquiry projects via the online learning environment or portal. These projects teach the students how to conduct internet-based research in a responsible way and ensure that the necessary information literacy skills are entrenched for future, independent internet research in the senior years.

Students in Years 10 - 12 are considerably more mobile around campus, regularly having to relocate to specialist classes, and benefit greatly from using a lightweight tablet PC device. This device is financed through an annual technology levy over three years. Use of the computer is more student directed in the senior years and the reality is that some boys will make greater formal use of the computer than others and some learning areas (and teachers) vary in their use of computers. However, the ease of access to information; to specific programmes where required; transferability of work between school and home; the ongoing engagement of boys in the learning process; and greater access to different modes of assessment now seen as important for students with different learning styles are just some of the reasons behind the decision to move to 1:1 technology in the senior years.

The way we live, learn, use and create has been irreversibly changed by technology that is currently available to us. The 1:1 computer programme at Hale School seeks to make learning anytime, anywhere a reality. Students are encouraged to develop skills of collaboration, working in teams as well as individually. Problem solving activities requiring higher order thinking skills are increasingly being incorporated into teaching programmes. We are combining innovative environments with highly skilled staff and excited and motivated students to build real world learning which in turn will develop our students as effective 21st Century learners.

16 January 2017

Dear Parents,

On behalf of the Hale School Parents’ and Friends’ Association, I would like to extend to you a warm welcome to the new school year.

There are exciting things ahead in 2017, not least the welcoming of our new Headmaster, Mr Dean Dell’Oro in Term 2, 2017. The P&F will also see some changes with members able to focus on one thing they are passionate about through the introduction of sub committees. We currently have sub-committees for the Sundowner, Canteen, P&F Ball and Parent Business Directory. We shall therefore see the P&F meetings move more towards an open invitation for any parent to talk about issues they wish to raise. May-be there is a friend or fundraising activity you’d like to see happen at the School? Maybe you have a particular interest in where the P&F funds are directed? Perhaps a supporter group or department (ie. music or cross country) has need of help? I would like to take this opportunity to ask you to think about what you’re passionate about around the School and engage in your area of interest.

To keep informed about social events and when P&F meetings are happening please read the newsletter, emails or check on the portal.

By this time you will have received your invitation to the annual P&F Sundowner on Monday 30 January from 6.00pm to 8.00pm in the Quadrangle. The Sundowner is a fun and enjoyable night to celebrate the start of another school year. It is a wonderful way to meet parents and catch up with old friends after the summer break. A few new ideas have been put in place for this event, in particular to help our new parents. On the portal we have asked parents to RSVP and indicate your son/s year level in 2017. We will be providing coloured wristbands to allow you to find counterpart parents and there will be areas identified for new parents to meet when they arrive. Please note this is a parents only function and there is no charge for this event.

I encourage all parents to wear their name badges to the Sundowner. Should you need a new badge, please email [email protected] and you will be able to collect this on the night.

I look forward to meeting many of you at the Sundowner and at our events throughout the year.

Warm wishes,

Tracy Silbert

How your family can join the Old Haleians in lending a helping hand.

The Association provides funding, support and assistance for School projects and programmes, including its building and service learning programmes. It runs the ‘Leading the Way’ mentoring programme, ‘Lending a Hand’ community assistance and ‘Make a Difference’ community service programmes. It also arranges professional networking, reunions and other events such as Old Boys’ Day, Careers Nights and Sports Days. To help develop and expand these programs the Association invites the families of current Hale students to participate each year.

Tickets are $100 each - and one family will have the chance to win the equivalent of 100% of a regular Year 12 day boy’s annual tuition fee, credited to their school account for the 2017 year.
