Christian songwriters Bill and Gloria Gaither oncetold the story of a time when they resurfaced theparking lot at their music company. It was a longprocess that involved many different materials and

stages. First, they laid down stone, rolled it out, andpressed it down. Then they put gravel on top of thestone and rolled that out and pressed it down. Last, they put hot, molten asphalt down on the stone androlled it over the other layers.

A few months after the resurfacing project, Bill noticedsomething amazing. He took the family out into themiddle of the parking lot, pointed down and said,“Look at that.” And right up through the rock, right

up through the gravel, right up through the first layerof asphalt, a green shoot had sprouted up. It wasn’tanything impressive or substantial. It was something achild could have reached down and plucked right out.

This determined green shoot didn’t come up becauseit was strong or sharp or because it had any specialability. It came up through the asphalt because it hadone quality—it was alive. And life  always reigns overno life.

For the grace of God that brings salvationhas appeared to all men.

Titus 2:11

The Romans Road

• God loves you!   "For God so loved the world that Hegave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes

in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."(John 3:16)

• God has a wonderful plan for your life!  "I have come that they may have life, and that theymay have it  more abundantly." (John 10:10b)

• Because of your sin, you are separated from God. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory ofGod” (Romans 3:23).

• The penalty for sin is death. “For the wages of sin is  death, but the gift of God is

eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

• The penalty for your sin was paid by Jesus Christ!  “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, inthat while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”(Romans 5:8).

• If you repent of your sin, confess and trust JesusChrist as your Lord and Savior, you will besaved from your sins!  “Whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall besaved” (Romans 10:13).

Salvation

“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus andbelieve in your heart that God has raised Him fromthe dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one

believes unto righteousness, and with the mouthconfession is made unto salvation”(Romans 10:9-10).

• You can be sure that if you ask Christ to save you,He will.

“Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born ofGod . . . . These things I have written to you whobelieve in the name of the Son of God, that you mayknow that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:1, 13).

Salvation is free.  It is offered by grace alone, becauseof Jesus Christ. There isn’t anything you can do toearn it, and once you have it, you can never lose it.

Salvation is available.  There is always hope, and

there is always a chance to accept Christ, as long asthere is life .

We Have Assurance of Our SalvationBecause . . .

• Jesus Christ protects it!   Hebrews 7:25 says,“Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermostthose who come to God through Him, since Healways lives to make intercession for them.” He

is our Mediator. Jesus Christ is guaranteeing andsecuring our salvation. We are not secure because ofanything in ourselves. We are secure because of Him.

Page 9: Your Greatest Turning Point

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/your-greatest-turning-point 9/34

• The Holy Spirit confirms it!  Romans 8:16 says, “TheSpirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that weare children of God.” When we are saved, Godsends the Holy Spirit to live within us. We haveGod in our hearts, constantly reminding us that weare His children.

• Others see it!   Jesus said, “By this My Father isglorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will beMy disciples” (John 15:8). When the Spirit comesto live within us, we will be known by the “fruit” ourlives produce. Galatians 5:22-23 gives us a list of thefruit of the Spirit.

• We share it!  We know that our lives have truly beentransformed because we now feel an urgency to tellsomeone else about what God did for us.

And let us consider one another in order tostir up love and good works, not forsaking the

assembling of ourselves together, as is the mannerof some, but exhorting one another, and so muchthe more as you see the Day approaching.

Hebrews 10:24-25

Why Join a Church? When we get involved in a church, we are blessedbecause we can both give and receive. Here are a fewof the many reasons why the Bible instructs us to joina local church.

• Commitment. By joining, we make a commitmentboth to Christ and His Church, reflected in tithes, attendance, and ministry involvement.

• Accountability. We receive the accountability, guidance, and counsel of other Christians by gettinginvolved in a local church.

• Knowledge. Church is one of the main places where we learn more about God and His Word. The church we attend must have an unwaveringcommitment to the study of God’s Word as “thepillar and ground of the truth” (I Timothy 3:15).

Church

• Support. The church was designed to meet the needs

of the people, to help those who cannot always helpthemselves. The “body” works together to supportall of its members.

• Service. Getting involved in a specific ministry orservice opportunity gives us a sense of belonging and

contribution, and it is also a way that we give ourtime and our talents to God.

• Growth.  Joining a church has nothing to do withsalvation or eternal life. But the church doesrepresent the place of spiritual growth. If we come

to church to learn so that we can practice what wehear, we will never be the same.

• Worship. God is present in the praises of Hispeople (Psalm 22:3). At church, we worship Godindividually but also corporately as a body of

believers.

• Fellowship. The church is a place to get to knowother Christians. We can meet others throughadult Bible fellowships, choir, men’s and women’sministries, small groups, recreational athletic leagues,

and more.

• Giving. God has instructed us to tithe. Through ourchurch, we can give our money directly to the workof the Lord. We have the privilege of supportingmissionaries, pastoral staff, and the many other

needs of the church.

Baptism Is . . .

An important act of obedience for every believer  (Matthew 28:19; Acts 10:47-48; Mark 1:9-11).The baptism of Jesus was an act of obedience to theheavenly Father.

A public testimony. We stand before a congregation ofour friends and family and tell what God has done inour lives.

Not salvation. If we trust in Jesus Christ, and we never

get baptized, when we die, we go straight into thepresence of God.

A symbol. It is the outward expression of the inwardtransformation that has taken place in our lives after wehave accepted Christ. We are symbolizing our death to

the old life of sin and proclaiming our resurrection to anew life in Christ (Romans 6:2-4).

How Should a Person Be Baptized?

Immersion is the only method of baptism thatidentifies the believer with Christ in His death, burialand resurrection. When we are immersed in water, weidentify ourselves with Christ in His death. Arising out

of the water, we declare our faith in His resurrection(Colossians 2:12).

The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

 James 5:16b

The Lord’s Prayer, found in Matthew 6:9-13, is amodel prayer that Jesus gave His disciples. It is amodel that we too can follow when we talk to ourheavenly Father.

Before You Pray . . .

• Decide that you will NOT pray like theHYPOCRITES: “They love to pray . . . that theymay be seen by men” (Matthew 6:5).

• Decide that you will NOT pray like the HEATHEN:“They think that they will be heard for their many

 words” (Matthew 6:7).

Praise  “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Yourname” (Matthew 6:9).“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and intoHis courts with praise” (Psalm 100:4).

Priorities  “Your kingdom come. Your will be done

on earth as it is  in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).“But seek first the kingdom of God and Hisrighteousness, and all these things shall be added toyou” (Matthew 6:33).

As we pray for discernment in priorities, we needto pray over all of the things that we may have toprioritize in our lives:

I am a Person  I have a relationship with God.

I am a Partner   I have a relationship with my spouse.

I am a Parent   I have a relationship with my children.

I am a Provider   I have a responsibilityin my job/profession.

I am a Participant   I have a responsibility in

other things I am asked to do.

Provision. “Give us this day our daily bread”(Matthew 6:11).

A sk, and it will be given to you;Seek, and you will find;K nock, and it will be opened to you (Luke 11:9).

Personal Relationships. “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” (Matthew 6:12).

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenlyFather will also forgive you. But if you do not forgivemen their trespasses, neither will your Father forgiveyour trespasses” (Matthew 6:14-15).

The entrance of Your words gives light.Psalm 119:130

No matter where we are in our spiritual journey— whether we have been a Christian for decades or forhours—God’s Word will never stop changing our lives!

What Will the Bible Change in Our Lives?Produce  spiritual growth. There is no way we will ever

grow in our faith apart from a personal, disciplinedreading and studying of God’s Word. It is our mostimportant means of growth (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Provide  cleansing for our life, guarding against thetoxins that erode our walk with the Lord (Psalm119:9).

Prevent  sin. The Word of God empowers us, enabling

us to be more sensitive to those things that can leadus astray (Psalm 37:31; Psalm 119:11).

Protect  us from Satan. If we know God’s Word and we are in the Word of God, we put Satan at adisadvantage because we have the power of God’s

Word working in our lives (Ephesians 6:11,17;Matthew 4:1-11).

Preserve  hope in times of discouragement. God’s Worddissipates discouraging thoughts, taking away the lies

that drive us down and reinforcing truths that lift usup (Luke 24:32, Psalm 119:114).

Promote  success in whatever we do. Joshua 1:8reminds us that “this Book of the Law shall notdepart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it

day and night, that you may observe to do accordingto all that is written in it. For then you will makeyour way prosperous, and then you will have goodsuccess.” (See also Psalm 1:1-3.)

Prepare  you for powerful praying. It helps you to

know how your requests coincide with God’s will(John 15:7).

Point  the way to salvation. The message of the Bible isthat we are to be “born again … through the Wordof God which lives and abides forever” (1 Peter 1:23).

(See also John 20:31; 2 Timothy 3:14-15.)

May the Lord give you understanding in all things.2 Timothy 2:7

Believer  is another word for a Christian—someone

who believes  in Jesus Christ. An unbeliever  issomeone who is not a Christian.

Baptism is the immersion of a believer into water. It isa statement to the world of faith in Jesus Christ thatidentifies a believer with Christ in His death, burial,

and resurrection (Hebrews 10:22).Born again When a person becomes a Christian, they

are “born again”—they have a new birth and a newlife in Jesus Christ. See John 3:1-21 where Jesustalks with Nicodemus about being “born again.”

Communion is also called The Lord’s Supper.  Weeat bread to represent Jesus’ broken body and wedrink juice to represent Jesus’ shed blood. In theNew Testament, The Lord’s Supper  was institutedby Christ for commemoration of His death

(1 Corinthians 11:28-29, 31). The importanceof communion is to examine ourselves and berenewed in righteousness and holy living as weremember Christ’s death. We take communion inremembrance of Him (1 Corinthians 11:25).

21

Faith  “… is believing that Christ is what He is said tobe, and that He will do what He has promised to do,and then to expect this of Him”

(Charles Haddon Spurgeon).Fasting  is denying the pleasure of eating so that

you can focus on your fellowship with God. Thepurpose of fasting in the Gospels and in the OldTestament was so a person could deny himself in his

physical being so he might concentrate on cominginto closer fellowship with God. The principle offasting is a tremendous way to emphasize the inwardperson by shutting out the outward person for ashort period of time.

Forgiveness  is canceling a debt; no longer liable foran account. The Lord Jesus has fully discharged allour obligations so that there is no legal ground forcharges to be pressed against us anymore. MoreoverHe has given us a perfect standing before God so

that we are fully acceptable in His sight.Grace  is God giving to us what we did not deserve in

the form of eternal life. Salvation is free—by gracealone. We cannot earn salvation. It is a gift thatGod offers and we accept. "For by grace you have

been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves,it is the free gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8 Phillips).

Holiness  is a purity of the heart, undefiled, separatefrom sin(ners). We cannot become holy without theSpirit of God. Galatians 5:22-23 tells us that the

characteristics of holiness are nine-fold: "The fruit ofthe Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

Against such there is no law."

Page 23: Your Greatest Turning Point

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/your-greatest-turning-point 23/34

Justification is the pivotal idea in the doctrine of

salvation. If a person is to be justified, he must pleadnot guilty and show that the opposition has no caseagainst him at all. Because Jesus went to the Cross,

when we put our faith in Him, we are pardoned. Our death sentence has been paid by Jesus Christ.

Living Sacrifice  In the Old Testament, an animalsacrifice was needed to receive forgiveness of sin.In the New Testament, there is no need for deadsacrifices anymore because Jesus Christ became thesacrifice for us. What God wants from all of us isthat we become living sacrifices, that we present ourbodies as instruments of service to God. I beseech

you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice . . . (Romans 12).

The New Testament  is the last 27 books of the 66books of the Bible. It begins with Matthew andends with Revelation. The New Testament wasoriginally written in Greek.

The Old Testament  is the first 39 books of the 66books in the Bible. It begins with Genesis and ends

with Malachi. The Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew.

Salvation When we are “saved,” we become aChristian and we are a brand new person inside.

We are not the same anymore. A new life has begun!

(Paraphrase of 2 Corinthians 5:17, TLB.) We usethe word “saved” because we are saved from deathand saved to eternal life.

Page 24: Your Greatest Turning Point

Sanctification is growing in the Lord, becoming holy

in life. Sanctification is living every day in lightof who you are in Christ. It is practiced purity—achallenge, especially in the culture in which we live.

Sin is anything we do that violates God’s commandsfor our lives. Sin was brought into this world by

Adam and Eve and so we are all born with a sinnature—the desire to serve ourselves instead ofGod. The Hebrew word for sin is “transgression” or“rebellion.” In the New Testament, the Greek wordfor sin literally means “missing the mark .”

Tithe  is 10% of what we earn. Our tithe goes to thechurch where we worship and serve. The tithe ispart of our worship and it belongs to the Lord. Ourgiving is the method that has always been used ofGod to meet the needs of the local church.

Trinity  Although the word Trinity  never appears in theBible, it is a biblical truth. God the Father, God theSon, and God the Spirit are three different persons, but one in essence. We call them the Trinity becausethey are literally “three in one.”

Witnessing  is sharing our faith, telling others aboutthe gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Successful

witnessing is sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ inthe power of the Holy Spirit and leaving the resultsup to God.

Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workmanthat needeth not to be ashamed, rightly

dividing the Word of truth.2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

How Do We Grow in Our Faith?

Be a faithful steward. Being a faithful steward involvesevery aspect of our lives. Everything we have hasbeen given to us by God. Our giving must reflectGod’s ownership of our possessions. And the use

we make of our time and talents must reflect God’sownership in our lives.

Spend time with other Christians. A small group orother kind of Bible study gives us accountability andencouragement.

Flee from the temptations of this world. When wecommit Scripture to memory, we have a ready weapon whenever we are faced with temptation.

Make sin an unwelcome guest in our lives. Sin drives a wedge between our hearts and God’s. If we want to

grow in faith, if we want to heed God’s plans for us, we cannot let sin control our lives.

Pray. When we talk to God, we begin to recognize His

voice. We become more sensitive to the things He istrying to do in our lives and in the world around us. And prayer is the way we confess our sin to God andreceive His forgiveness.

Study the Scriptures. God’s Word is truly the key! If

we are in the Word, it will cause us to grow, and it will make us complete—able to do everything that we are required to do, and capable of any ministrythat God should ask us to accomplish.

The first devil said, “I know what I’ll do. I’ll tell themthere is no God.”

Satan said, “That’s not going to delude anybody. Theyknow there is a God.”

The second one said, “I’ll tell them there is no hell.”

Satan said, “You will deceive no one that way because

men know deep down in their hearts that there is a place called hell and a punishment for sin.”

The third said, “I know what I’ll do. I’ll tell them thereis no hurry .”

And Satan said, “You will ruin men by the thousands.

The most dangerous of all delusions is the idea thatthere is plenty of time.”

Jesus is returning for those who have accepted the giftof salvation. And the Bible tells us, in no uncertain

terms, that His return is imminent. James says,“Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is athand” (James 5:8). Peter says, “The end of all things isnear. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled sothat you can pray” (1 Peter 4:7, NIV 1984).
