YOUR GIFTS. YOUR HOSPITAL. YOUR COMMUNITY. Supporting ThedaCare Medical Center - New London Campus WOLF RIVER AREA HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2014 Getting Better Together www.Thedacare.org/Foundations In April, more than 400 runners and walkers came together to raise more than $18,000 at this year’s Wolf River Sturgeon Shuffle. The 5 Mile and 2 Mile run/walk is designed for athletes of all ages with the course paralleling the Wolf River along County X with a portion of the return route going on the Sturgeon Trail. If the time is right, like it was this year racers can catch a glimpse of the famous sturgeon doing their own run. Sturgeon are prehistoric fish that can live more than 100 years and weigh up to 200 pounds. Each spring, they swim up the Wolf River to spawn. One of the goals of this year’s event was to involve as many youth in the run as possible. “We believe combatting youth obesity is an important initiative that we wanted to focus on and we are proud to say that over 130 participants at this year’s event were under 18 years old,” said Heather Stern, Executive Director of the Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation. All funds raised from the Sturgeon Shuffle go to the Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation, which supports the Thedacare Medical Center – New London Campus and community outreach programs that are designed to improve community health. “ We like to say the Sturgeon Shuffle is about Giving Back and Getting Fit. It’s a great workout – whether it’s a competitive run or just a pleasant morning walk – while raising funds to improve the health of our community” — Heather Stern, Executive Director of the Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation 4th Annual Wolf River Sturgeon Shuffle A Huge Triumph!

Glamour – and supporting ThedaCare Medical Center -New London Campus – was the focus of The Wolf river Area Healthcare Foundation’s 10th Annual Dinner.

More than 250 guests helped raise nearly $50,000 at Casino royale on September 17 at Crystal falls Banquet Hall. The event featured gorgeous decorations, casino games, raffles, auction tables, and great food.

“The night was a tremendous success as a result of the generous support of so many amazing people. We could not have reached our goals and had such a successful night without each and every one who helped make it possible,” said foundation executive director Heather Stern. “every gift to the foundation directly supports the New London campus and the community. We are incredibly grateful for those who help made our work a reality.”

All funds raised at the dinner helps the foundation in its mission to ensure that ThedaCare Medical Center - New London Campus has state-of-the-art facilities and equipment to serve the community’s healthcare needs. The proceeds from this year’s event was used to implement the MyThedaCare online portal for New London area residents.

The Wolf river Area Healthcare foundation is celebrating 10 years of making a difference in New London and surrounding communities.

The foundation was created in 2003 to seek and secure financial resources to make sure ThedaCare Medical Center - New London has state-of-the-art facilities and equipment while also providing outreach and education in Waupaca and outagamie counties and surrounding areas.

“The Wolf river Area Healthcare foundation plays a key role at the hospital and helping to fund projects that might otherwise have to wait because there isn’t money in the regular budget to do them,” said executive director Heather Stern.

Bill Schmidt, president and Ceo of ThedaCare Medical Center-New London, said the foundation plays an integral role in helping the hospital with its mission of creating a healthier community.

“The foundation is a big help with moving projects forward that help us enhance the care of patients,” he said. “Sometimes we want to do something, but it’s not a necessity so it moves down the list. The foundation helps us get some of those projects done.”

One of the foundation’s first projects was supporting the remodeling of the hospital’s birth center. As part of that project, state-of-the-art labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum rooms were built. The birth center opened in 2005.

Another foundation project that played an integral role in improving care at the hospital was a new chemotherapy suite. The new suite features reclining chairs, privacy curtains, individual Tvs, and space for loved ones to sit with patients while they receive treatment. in addition, the foundation helped to set up a learning center outside of the suite where up-to-date cancer publications and materials from the American Cancer Association are available along with books, listings of local resources, and a computer connected to the internet.

Beyond helping patients feel physically better, one foundation project – a new chapel – helps patients and their family members feel spiritually and emotionally better. Stern said the foundation led the effort to build a chapel at the hospital to provide a place for people to reflect, pray, and grieve. It also provides a comforting space for sensitive conversations between medical staff and family members.

“Without the foundation, the chapel never would have happened,” Schmidt said. “You don’t need to have a chapel in your hospital, but it does enhance what we have by providing a place where family members and patients can go and reflect.”

The foundation’s projects extends beyond the hospital. The WrAHf helped purchase a new ambulance in 2008 to replace an older one and also built a physical therapy room at ThedaCare Physicians-Clintonville to provide improved care in that community.

“We constantly work with hospital leadership on projects that will improve the quality of care provided in New London and surrounding communities,” Stern said. “We have done a lot of wonderful things in the past 10 years and look forward to doing even more in the years to come.”
