2017 Annual Catholic Campaign Parish Ambassadors

In 2016, the Annual Catholic Campaign raised a record total of $1,303,263.

We couldn’t have done it without our ambassadors and volunteers, Parish Priests and staff, and our very generous donors. Your tremendous support has helped to:• Bring Catholic education to the poor through the MacKillop Fund.• Prepare our future priests at Holy Spirit Seminary.• Provide care for our retired priests in their time of need and • Support Centacare’s ministries which bring hope and healing to those marginalised in our prisons

and hospitals as well as those suffering with mental illness and violence in their lives.

As you know, the Annual Catholic Campaign is the sole philanthropic in-pew appeal that encourages all parishioners throughout the Archdiocese of Brisbane to support essential ministries of the Church.

This year’s Annual Catholic Campaign will be held on 9-10 September.

Thank you for your support of the vital works of the Church.

DONORS

More parishioners joined the Living Faith Society demonstrating an increase in support for one in-parish appeal and contributing 26% of donations to the Campaign.

All 100 Parishes in the Archdiocese of Brisbane came together to raise funds.

Thousands of generous people from the Catholic community prayerfully gave what they could to support the good works of the Church.

We could not have a successful Campaign without the help of Parish Ambassadors. It’s estimated that over 1175 hours of volunteer service has gone toward the Campaign in the last four years. That’s dedication!

The Catholic Foundation collected and counted all Campaign donations which sped up the process and ensured donors were thanked at the earliest opportunity. Parishes knew the results of the Campaign within 4 weeks.

The Priests Foundation supports retired priests with basic living assistance, convalescent care, accommodation and health care. With the number of retiring priests growing substantially, there is an increased effort to support those who have spent their lives serving us.

Where do raised funds go?

2. Priests Foundation

Centacare provides social services across the Archdiocese, and cares for more than 160,000 Queenslanders in need each year. Programs assist those struggling with physical and emotional disabilities and family support. It serves the mission of the Church by working in prisons, hospitals, and psychiatric pastoral care.

1. Centacare - Catholic social services

All funds raised during the Annual Catholic Campaign go directly to mission. Donations are divided evenly between four different ministries, which provide Catholic social services, care for retired priests, fund Catholic education bursaries for disadvantaged children and educate our future Parish Priests. Any gifts designated as non-deductible donations support the Archdiocese’s Annual Grants Program.

2017GOAL

Train 10 hospital chaplains to care for people in hospitals, train 20 prison chaplains to visit the imprisoned, provide 200 bags to rehabilitating prisoners and purchase 1 bus for seafarers whose work brings them to our shores after months away from home.

The MacKillop Fund gives the gift of a Catholic education to families in crisis or poverty – including refugees, and families impacted by disability, trauma or family breakdown. A bursary can be the lifeline families living in extreme circumstances need, to give their children hope for the future.

3. MacKillop Bursary Fund

The Seminary provides exceptional formation for our next generation of priests in Queensland and the world. As Pope Francis reminds us, “The seminary is a place where one develops their vocation, gaining an in depth understanding of the Gospel, Confession, the Eucharist and prayer.”

4. Holy Spirit Seminary

The Grants Program provides competitive grants to local agencies or initiatives that provide exceptional ministry programs within our community yet are experiencing financial barriers to expanding their outreach.

5. Annual Grants Program (non tax-deductible)

2017GOAL

Provide 12 new bursaries to children whose families are experiencing significant financial hardship

Your responsibilitiesWe have outlined the standard responsibilities for an Annual Catholic Campaign Ambassador. These may vary slightly between Parishes, so remember to discuss the allocation of roles and responsibilities with your Parish Priest before the start of the Campaign.

Help spread the word

1. Talk to your fellow parishioners about the various ministries the Catholic Campaign supports, sharing any personal experiences.

2. Speak briefly from the pulpit. Scripts will be provided, for use as a guide.

3. Encourage councils, volunteer leaders and other parishioners to get involved in promoting the Annual Catholic Campaign within their own networks.

4. Consider making your own gift to the Campaign and assist these agencies in need.

5. Encourage regular gifts. While all gifts given with a generous heart will make a huge impact, regular gifts can help even more, providing an ongoing gift to each agency.

6. Your enthusiasm for the Campaign will show others within your community that you believe in the

cause and value their support.

Organise materials

1. You can use the supplied resources to help spread the word about the Annual Catholic Campaign within your Parish, Mass Centre or community. You will receive newsletter inserts, posters, and brochures. Inserts will be made available online and will be emailed.

2. Use your Parish’s newsletter to promote the Campaign and share stories.

3. Ensure all Annual Catholic Campaign materials and resources from the Catholic Foundation are shared with relevant community representatives.

4. Distribute envelopes, brochures and materials ahead of Pre-Commitment Weekend and on Commitment Weekend.

5. Assist with gift collection during Commitment Weekend and Follow Up Weekend.

Team work

1. Work with other Ambassadors at your local Church or Mass Centre to coordinate different responsibilities.

2. Work with Parish and school staff to organise promotional activities (e.g. distribute posters, flyers, envelopes).

3. Actively ask other parishioners to be Ambassadors. After all, many hands make light work.

4. You can also call or email the team at the Catholic Foundation. We are here to make sure you have the information, resources and materials to do a great job.

5. We will share regular information and updates, and walk you through the steps you need to take, and when.

1. Regular gifts make a massive impact

Why do we need regular gifts? In addition to the impact of their gift, regular gifts help in a number of other ways: • It may be easier for donors to give manageable amounts over a longer period of time• Monthly giving provides a predictable and stable income stream for Catholic agencies• The Church knows how many gifts are expected, and can plan for future needs of the Church

accordingly • There are fewer administrative costs and postage.

Benefits to being a regular donorThis Living Faith Society acknowledges our committed monthly givers. Every quarter, members receive a daily devotional prayer booklet and updates on the impact of their contributions. A

consolidated tax receipt is issued for the end of financial year.

Signing up is easyAn electronic monthly or quarterly gift directly from your bank account or credit card provides the Archdiocese with a sustainable and reliable stream of donations to help plan, budget and invest in future ministry initiatives. It’s quick, easy and more budget friendly for donors. A consolidated tax receipt is sent to regular donors at the end of financial year.

Changing your regular gift is easy After you sign up to give an electronic monthly gift, you can choose to increase, decrease, or stop your gifts at any time by contacting the Catholic Foundation on (07) 3324 3200.

Have you thought about becoming a Living Faith Society member? We encourage all priests, staff, campaign ambassadors and other volunteers to consider joining the Living Faith Society today to make this commitment themselves in order to lead and inspire others.

2. A different plate collection on Commitment Weekend

When do we collect the Annual Catholic Campaign?

The Annual Catholic Campaign collection will immediately follow the Archbishop’s video/audio homily. The regular Parish collection will take place at its usual time. This is a change from previous years, but we hope it will remove any confusion.

Organising the Campaign’s collection We can honour donors’ intentions by asking them to place ALL gifts inside the Campaign envelopes. As an Ambassador, you are asked to make sure there are processes in place to send the collection plate around immediately after the Archbishop’s homily for the Annual Catholic Campaign.

Advise donors to place Catholic Campaign gifts, including coins, inside the Campaign envelopes. Place the Campaign envelopes and loose cash and coins (if any) from the Campaign collection directly inside a sealable collection plastic bag.

Each collection, from each Mass, needs to be placed in a white sealable bag. There should be enough bags provided to ensure only one collection is placed inside. Contact Lesley Williams, the Annual Catholic Campaign Coordinator if you think you will need additional bags for Commitment Weekend.

Can people still give after Commitment Weekend? The following weekend is Follow Up Weekend, where parishioners have another opportunity to give a gift. The Parish Priest will instruct parishioners to place their gifts inside a Campaign envelope, and place the envelope with the regular Parish collection.

Campaign envelopes need to be separated out after Mass and placed in one of the sealable collection plastic bag provided.

What to do with the sealable collection bag?

The sealed bags need to be placed in a safe and secure location until they are collected at a pre-arranged time from the Parish office.

They will then be sent to the Catholic Foundation office, which is responsible for acknowledging all gifts, issuing donors with a tax receipt as appropriate and reporting results.

All donors who provide their contact details with their gift will receive a receipt and thank you letter from the Catholic Foundation.

9

It is vital to maintain the confidentiality of all of our givers.

All individuals who handle giving envelopes are asked to maintain absolute anonymity of givers and giving amounts.

Frequently Asked Questions1. What is the Annual Catholic Campaign?

The Annual Catholic Campaign is a once a year, in-pew fundraising appeal that supports the vital ministries of the Archdiocese of Brisbane:

• Centacare: Providing Catholic social services through hospital chaplaincy, psychiatric pastoral care and domestic violence

• Priests Foundation: Caring for Priests in retirement and illness

• Mary MacKillop Brisbane Catholic School Access Fund: Enabling greater access to Catholic education for children whose families are experiencing severe financial hardship

• Holy Spirit Seminary: Preparing seminarians as our future Priests.

Non-tax deductible gifts received through the Annual Catholic Campaign will support:

• Annual Grants Program: Providing grants to support youth ministry and youth programs throughout the Archdiocese.

2. Why did the Archdiocese of Brisbane start the Annual Catholic Campaign?

In past years, the Archdiocese conducted in-parish appeals for each of the Archdiocese charitable ministries. These took place at different times of the year and took up the time and energy of Parish Priests, Parish staff, and parishioners.

In 2012, with the objective of simplifying the fundraising activities, the Archbishop launched the Annual Catholic Campaign, a single in-pew appeal, to be held on a weekend each September for all of the ministries.

Consolidating the parish-based appeals allows us to be more efficient in how we raise funds for these vital ministries and removes some of the pressure placed on our Parishes.

3. Can I designate my support to a particular area?

The Annual Catholic Campaign promotes the many good works of the Church and encourages support for all of the organisations. All gifts to the Annual Catholic Campaign will be distributed equally amongst the beneficiary ministries.

4. Who decides how the money is distributed?

The Archbishop of Brisbane, in consultation with the Archdiocesan Finance Council, will determine the ministries to be funded each year. This year, all tax deductible gifts will be split equally amongst Centacare, the Priests Foundation, Holy Spirit Seminary and the Mary MacKillop Brisbane School Access Fund.

5. I already give a regular gift, what do I have to do?

If parishioners are already part of the Living Faith Society as regular givers, they will not be required to do anything unless they wish to amend their current regular gift.

11

Page 13: Your gift is the answer to someone’s prayer. · Surfers Paradise $19,824.90 Toowong $5,915.00 Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart $12,163.65 Victoria Point $1,497.00 Vietnamese Catholic Community

6. Is this just giving extra to the offices of the Archdiocese?

No. Funds raised through the Annual Catholic Campaign are processed through the Catholic Foundation and deposited straight into legally established Trusts, then designated to specific ministries.

7. How can people access the Mary MacKillop Brisbane School Access Fund or find more information?

The MacKillop Brisbane Catholic School Access Fund (MacKillop Fund) provides access to Catholic education for students who are from families experiencing significant financial hardship. Bursaries are awarded each year to support the student to the end of their stage of schooling, as long as the family is in need of the assistance.

You can access the Expression of Interest form here: https://catholicfoundation.org.au/how-we-help/provide-education-bursaries/apply-mary-mackillop-brisbane-catholic-school-access-fund/

13. What is the expectation of parishioners to give?

We sometimes hear the comment, “Our Parish is already struggling to raise money through our regular Parish collections, and many of our parishioners are elderly pensioners.”

Every gift is important, regardless of the amount.

We simply ask everyone to give what they can to help maintain and grow the good works of the Church. Equal sacrifice comes through each of us giving in proportion to what we have been blessed to receive. remember, gifts over $2 are tax deductible.
