C o n g r a t u l a t i o n s ! Yo u ’ v e reached the next stage of your educational journey and it’s time to choose your Key Stage 4 options at MAP. This ‘Your Future’ booklet sets out t h e Ye a r 1 0 c u r r i c u l u m , including the core subjects, which everyone will study, as well as the optional subjects.

This booklet describes these ‘core’ subjects, as well as the subject choices you are now able to make. These ‘option’ subject courses are outlined in this booklet and are there to support you in making your decisions. Please read the information carefully and ask a teacher if there is anything you do not understand. !Shortly after the Your Future Evening you will be given a Transition Form to complete with your subject choices. Once completed you must return this form to Student Reception.

Before making your f inal choices you should consult w i t h y o u r p a r e n t s , y o u r teachers and, if necessary, someone from Careers South West. !Only after you have all made y o u r s e l e c t i o n s , w i l l t h e Academy construct the Year 10 timetable and finalise your choices. !!

Core Entitlement Subjects

ENGLISH GCSE Students will be entered for English Language plus English Literature (2 GCSEs). Students will develop skills of analysis in their reading of a range of different text types from different times and cultures. They will also develop skills of writing a range of text types, for different purposes and audiences. Finally, students will develop the skills of speaking and listening in a range of contexts and roles. The courses offered present students with an exciting look at the world around them, and aim to prepare them for effective participation in the ever-changing world. !!MATHEMATICS GCSE GCSE Functional Mathematics is studied at one of two tiers of entry.   Students will sit either the Higher or Foundation tier. The Mathematics curriculum is broken down into four main areas of study: Number, Algebra, Shape Space and Measure, and Handling Data. The current GCSE being studied is assessed through two examinations, one with, and one without a calculator. Each exam carries a 50% weighting. !

SCIENCE There are a number of science courses available as part of the Science curriculum. Students following the Core+ pathway will study GCSE Triple Science which is started ion Year 9 and will al low them to achieve a tr iple science qualification. Students following the Core or Skills+ pathways will follow GCSE Science in year 10, and Additional Science in year 11, allowing them to achieve a double award qualification. Students following the Skills pathway will follow a level 2 Science BTEC First Award in Principles of Applied Science in year 10 and a level 2 Science BTEC First Award in Applications of Science in year 11. Students will need to complete the year 10 course before progressing to the year 11 course. Those who study the GCSE course will be required to complete coursework during the year and an exam at the end of the year. While the BTEC course it is assessed continuously through a portfolio of assignments, all of which must be completed to at least a pass level to achieve the qualification. During each one-year course students will be externally assessed based on a unit of study completed within the classroom. Theses external assessments will form 25% of the final grade.

!SPORT AND ACTIVITIES All students study Sports & Activities each week as part of the National Curriculum.  Students have the opportunity to follow a pathway that suits their interests; these option pathways are t y p i c a l l y P e r f o r m a n c e , O u t d o o r a n d Adventurous Activities or Leadership. Additionally students within the skills pathway will follow leadership focused blocks of work. These pathway options provide the major focus of study in Sports & Activities throughout Key Stage 4 and include a range of the following activities; Football, Rugby, Netball, Cricket, Rounders, Climbing, Trampolining, Table Tennis, Fitness, Vaulting, Rocketball, Kayaking, Mountain Biking, Athletics and Baseball. !!RELIGIOUS STUDIES AND CITIZENSHIP Students have the opportunity to study a variety of issue-based topics and are asked to explore them from a social, moral, cultural and spiritual dimension. Throughout the course students are encouraged to think independently, explore a range of different points of view, argue persuasively and develop effective written and verbal communication skills. !!BUSINESS Students who select Business in Year 10 and 11 will continue their GCSE Business course started in Year 9. While studying this course you will be introduced to the world of small businesses and will look at what makes someone a successful business person. You will find out how to develop an idea and spot an opportunity, and turn that into a successful business. You wil l also understand how to make a business effective and manage money whilst seeing how the world around us affects small businesses and all the people involved. You will learn more about how small businesses are developed and discover how businesses promote themselves and keep their customers happy. Finally you will learn how businesses manage both their finances and the people who work for them. In this course you will learn to: !

• communicate and explain your ideas • think creatively and make decisions • work with numbers to solve business

problems • learn about the world of business through

research and investigation, as well as through practical tasks.

ICT Students at MAP follow an innovative ICT course allowing students to become independent and discerning users of ICT.  The ‘Edexcel GCSE in IT’ course enables students to acquire and apply creative and technical skills, knowledge and understanding of ICT in a range of contexts using a wide range of Microsoft and Macromedia software.  S tudents wi l l develop thei r understanding of current and emerging technologies and their social and commercial impact. They will develop their understanding of the legal, social, economic, ethical and environmental issue raised by ICT as well as the potential risks when using ICT. The course is made up of two units. Students study the skil ls to complete one unit of coursework and then one final exam at the end of the second year of study. This equates to one full GCSE in Information Communication Technology. !EFFECTIVE LEARNING The Effective Learning team supports those students who have difficulties accessing the curriculum, for whatever reason, as well as those who are entitled to receive additional support, both in the classroom and through the Effective Learning Centre. In-class support is directed towards the core subjects of English, Maths, ICT and Science, but may also be available in other curriculum areas. Some students, who have specific needs will follow a personal learning package, which will be individually arranged. These students will spend time in the ELC where they will receive additional and highly focussed support. The Centre aims to provide a structured learning environment, with work tailored to meet each individual’s needs.

Option Subject Information – Option A (English Baccalaureate Options)

COMPUTER SCIENCE GCSE Do you want to gain a real and in depth understanding of how computer technology works? Do you want an insight into what goes on ‘behind the scenes’? Do you want to learn computer programming to solve problems? !Computing will allow you to develop critical thinking, analysis and problem solving. It could be a stepping stone to higher education and a wealth of exciting career options. You will cover three Units- !

• Unit A451: Computer systems and programming - Covers the body of knowledge about computer systems on which the examination will be based (40%)

• Unit A452- Practical investigation - An investigative computing task which assesses: research, technical understanding, analysis of problem, historical perspective, use of technical writing skills, recommendations and evaluation (30%)

• Unit A453: Programming Project (30%) - Design a coded solution to a problem, explain its function and identify success and any limitations.

• !You will have the opportunity to learn about the history of computers, the inside of computers, how a computer works and how to design programs. !You will also have opportunities to work with and visit experts at Plymouth University. GEOGRAPHY GCSE Geography has some of the highest GCSE results at Marine Academy Plymouth. Do you enjoy finding out about other countries and the processes that shape our globe? Are you concerned about the future of our planet? The topics range from disastrous earthquakes, volcanoes and floods to birth control in India and the impact of tourism on different parts of the world. The course involves field trips. !This year students have visited the south coast of Devon, a river on Dartmoor and Plymouth city centre. The final grade is awarded as follows: Paper 1 (37.5%), Paper 2 (37.5%), Coursework (25%). !!!HISTORY GCSE GCSE History is the subject of the enquiring mind.  A subject that enables students to develop their understanding of the present by immersing themselves in the past.   History is a well sought after subject in further and higher education and can lead to a job in a variety of careers owing to the analytical skills that the course develops.  The topics that the students will study at GCSE have been selected to help them progress into A-level History seamlessly and also reflect on the topics completed in Key Stage 3.  The History GCSE comprises three units that will be assessed by examination; Nazi Germany 1918-1945, Crime and punishment through time and Protest in 20th century and a controlled assessment on Government and Protest in America. I believe students will find History is a simulating and engaging subject. !!!MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES: FRENCH GCSE Students will have the opportunity to study a modern foreign language at MAP. This will be by opting for a GCSE in French. New GCSE topics cover four contexts: Lifestyle, Leisure, Home & Environment, Work & Education. Students will complete two pieces of written assessment (30% of whole grade), two recorded speaking tests (30%), sit one listening paper (20%) and one reading paper (20%). !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!Option Subject information – Option B (GCSE and BTEC Options)

ART AND DESIGN BTEC This course involves learning to work with design briefs. You will research and analyse the work of artists and designers, develop imaginative and creative thinking and go on to develop your own design ideas. This will culminate in producing your own professional 2D and 3D art work including sculptures, drawings, paintings, stencils and prints. The qualification is predominately coursework based and is completed during a ten hour practical exam. This course is designed to develop your artistic ability, open your horizons to new ways of thinking and see and understand the world around you. !!CATERING GCSE This is a very practical course using knowledge and skills learned during the course, applying them to realistic situations. Students will learn about the catering industry, food hygiene, nutrition and meal planning, as well as developing practical skills in food preparation.  Organisation, planning and problem solving skills are involved in this subject. The course consists of an internally assessed controlled assessment unit worth 20%, an exam board prescribed task worth 40% and a theory examination worth 40% of the final grade. !!MUSIC BTEC Students who opt for this course will explore their creative passion for music by;

• Performing as part of a music ensemble e.g. working as pop/rock band, singing group, instrumental group.

• Creating their own ideas and producing a musical product such as a recorded set of songs/pieces or live performance.

• Exploring music sequence programs and areas of music technology to create a variety of musical compositions.

As well as the above, you will be expected to enhance your instrumental skills and will learn about working in the music industry for your own professional development. As part of the new specification students now sit an exam testing knowledge of job roles and organisations within the music industry. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PERFORMING ARTS (DRAMA) and PERFORMING ARTS (DANCE) BTEC This course provides students with the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge aimed not only at those who want to work in the performing arts industries but also those who enjoy drama and see it as a way of developing their confidence. Whether you follow a dance pathway or a acting pathway you will need to complete 3 Units one of which is an individual showcase in which you will perform a solo piece of work to an examiner. You will also be expected to do an online exam based around your knowledge of the performing arts industry. This BTEC qualification will give you the opportunity to perform to a range of audiences in your chosen discipline. This is a popular and successful BTEC but will mean that you are prepared to perform and work with others in your group. !!!PRODUCT DESIGN GCSE GCSE Product Design involves students in activities which develop products with innovation and flair. The specification has no material bias, it anticipates that students will develop their skills through working with any appropriate material including, where and when appropriate, the use of ICT. Students will learn about product analysis, research skills, designing for needs, materials, design skills and product modelling. The course has two internally assessed controlled assessments worth 60% of the final grade, an externally assessed design challenge worth 20% and an externally assessed exam worth 20%. !!RELIGIOUS STUDIES GCSE In GCSE Religious Studies we explore a wide variety of issues including; early life and care of the elderly, discrimination, pollution and care of the planet. Throughout the course you are encouraged to think independently, study a range of different points of views, argue persuasively and develop your own beliefs and opinions.  This GCSE is designed to make you think about the world in which you live and understand what other people believe and why.  Religious Studies is a useful qualification when applying for jobs or looking to study further at ‘A’ level or at University; it supports you in developing and defending your own views and learning how to argue your case. If you are interested in the world, about the way we live and why we live this way – this might be the GCSE for you! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!SPORT BTEC This exciting course, offers the potential for students, boys and girls, who are actively involved in sport and physical activity to continue with their practical involvement and develop their knowledge and understanding through a broad range of specialist units. The course is made up of four units of study. Two of which are mandatory;

• Fitness for Sport and Exercise • Practical Sports Performance !

The remaining two units will be chosen to ensure they are appropriate to the student needs, local community and centre resources. !For each unit, students are required to meet pre-determined criteria. Students are able to demonstrate understanding in different ways that suit their individual learning styles. Within this course it is also be possible to achieve the Sports Leader Level 1 Award, which will involve working with younger students including those from feeder primary schools in a Sports Leader capacity. This part of the course provides students with the opportunity to develop skills of leadership, confidence and organisation that are transferrable within school and beyond. !Whilst the course is predominately vocational in nature, parts of the qualification are assessed through both written assignment work and an external assessment; therefore students following this course must be prepared to work to reasonable but strict deadlines. Students who choose this course should be actively involved in sports activities both in and out of College. !For more information speak to Mr Morgan in Sport and Activities.

!Option Subject information – Option C (BTEC and Vocational Options)

!ART AND DESIGN BTEC This course involves learning to work with design briefs. This course is designed to develop your artistic ability, open your horizons to new ways of thinking and see and understand the world around you. ! !CONSTRUCTION – TROWEL TRADES You should consider this subject if you enjoy practical work and a hands on approach as you will be working in a realistic construction environment. You will study mainly in the trowel workshops although you should be aware there is some classroom work. The course consists of four units:

• Unit 110: Developing brickwork skills • Unit 111: Developing quoin skills (building 90 degree angles) • Unit 116: Developing blockwork skills • Unit 205: Expanding brickwork skills

Following the successful completion of these units you will have the opportunity to gain an insight into the wider range of masonry trades, including plastering and rendering. You will also learn more about how to interpret construction plans and drawings. Throughout the course you will develop many transferable key employability skills, these will include; teamwork, health and safety, communication and independent study. They will help you become a valuable employee in the future. This course will include learning visits to construction sites. Progression opportunities include further courses in trowel, plumbing, carpentry or electrical, although if you decide to study outside of construction you will still benefit from the skills you will have developed on this course. !

!HAIR & BEAUTY Qualification to be studied over two academic years: City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector. Students will spend three sessions a week in the MAP hair and beauty salons covering the practical skills and underpinning knowledge related to the Hair and Beauty Industry. Topics covered include: an introduction to the hair and beauty sector, health and safety, personal presentation, creating an image, shampooing and conditioning hair, hair styling and plaiting, temporary hair colour, hand care and nail art, skin care and make-up and team work. !The Diploma provides opportunities to develop a range of skills, techniques and personal qualities essential for progression onto Level 2 hairdressing and beauty programmes and possible future employment. !Students will be assessed during practical sessions and will also undertake written assignments and tasks, all of which will be recorded in the learner’s portfolio. !!!!HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE Are you interested in working with children and caring for others? Do you want a career in one or more of the health care professions? !A Level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care will give you the opportunity to learn the theory of health care and develop practical skills in a variety of settings. !Students will study units including; Human lifespan development, The impact of nutrition in Health and Social Care and Developing effective communication. There will be opportunities to meet health care professionals and gain valuable insights into the health care profession. Health and Social Care is a modular qualification and is both internally and externally assessed. This BTEC Level 2 Award is the equivalent of a GCSE. Upon completion of the course students are able to progress to Level 3 study in Year 12. !

HOSPITALITY, FOOD PREPARATION AND COOKERY  The Hospitality qualification is delivered in partnership with Cornwall College, Saltash and provides an exciting opportunity for you to gain insight and key knowledge across the industry. !Learning on the course is supported throughout by regular visits and excursions into industry. You will pay frequent visits to the College’s satellite campus at the Cornwall School of Tourism and Hospitality based at the renowned St Mellion International Resort. Access to the resort will allow you to gain a wide understanding of hospitality within a real life setting. In addition you will visit new and developing areas of hospitality including the exciting and expanding development at Plymouth’s Royal William Yard and other businesses within the area. Frequent visits into industry will create significant opportunities for you to learn first-hand and will support theory based assignments within the classroom. During the course you will explore in-depth the great many areas in the hospitality industry including, but not exclusively, restaurants and hotels. !Key knowledge and skills will be developed during the course supported by modules and units including customer service skills, food preparation, cookery and serving, beverage service and how to plan and run an event. !Food preparation and cookery units will focus on enabling you to acquire vital skills and knowledge to provide a service to the strict levels of hygiene required. !Throughout the course there is a very strong focus on vital employability skills which are embedded within key areas such as teamwork, communication and independent work and study. Progression from the course is possible onto further hospitality or catering qualifications or the first step into employment in the industry. !!MUSIC BTEC Students who opt for this course will explore their creative passion for music by;
