Make a difference in your Kansas community through photographs. The photo contest is open to
Kansas students from first through 12th grade. Winners will be announced as part of the state’s
157th birthday celebration on Friday, January 26, 2018, at the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka.
Meet L. W. Halbe, pictured at right, a teenager who captured
the scenes from his time and place growing up in Kansas. Living
in Dorrance in 1908 at the age of 15, he discovered a small box
camera and began taking pictures of his community. His photographs
are now among the Kansas Historical Society collections.
Last year’s contest entrants followed in Halbe’s footsteps. Images
above by 11th grade winner Ashton Faith Imel, third grade winner
Owen Sime, and 12th grade winner Chance Parker provided glimpses
into the everyday scenes of their communities.
