Easter Sunday - 8th April
Easter is celebrated in Christian communities across the world. However, not everyone celebrates in exactly the same way. Here are five Easter traditions from around the world.
Kite Flying - In Bermuda, people
traditionally fly kites for Easter. This practise
is said to have begun when a British teacher
had trouble explaining Christ’s Ascension to a
church class so he made a cross-shaped kite to
help illustrate the event to his students. Now
people make colourful paper kites with long
tails for Good Friday every year. Most of
these kites are hexagonal, with wheel-like
spokes, instead of cross-shaped, while some
are octagonal in shape.
Egg Breaking - Many countries dye and
decorate eggs for Easter, but in Latvia, the
tradition also involves breaking them. As part
of a holiday game, each person takes a
coloured boiled egg, then chooses a partner.
The two players tap the large ends of their
eggs together, followed by the narrow ends.
They then tap one narrow end against one
wide end, before repeating the process. If a
player’s egg breaks, that player
must leave the game. The last
person left without a broken egg
is the winner.
Easter-Crime - In Norway, it
is common to turn to mystery
books and TV detective shows
during the Easter period. This
tradition, known as
“Passkekrim” or “Easter-Crime”
started because many new crime
books are published between
Holy Thursday and Easter
Monday - a period of public
holiday. Also, it is common for
Norwegians to go on holiday
during this period, often taking
new books along with them.
Witch Costumes - In western Sweden,
children dress up as witches to visit
neighbours in a tradition similar to American
trick or treat. The children are known as
“Paskkarringar” (Easter hags) and carry
brooms and Easter cards during their visits.
They may receive a small amount of money or
candy from their neighbours and often carry a
coffee pot with them to hold any goodies. This
tradition started because Mediaeval people
thought that on Easter eve, witches stole
brooms and flew over church bell towers on
their way to visit Satan.
Easter Bonfires - Large fires are common in
parts of the Netherlands and northern
Germany. They are known as “Paasvur” in
Dutch and “Osterfeuer” in German. They are
lit at sunset on Easter Day. This tradition
actually comes from the pre-Christian Saxons
and was adopted by Christians during the
Mediaeval period. The fires are meant to bring
the community together and symbolise the
triumph of life over death. They may be used
to light a Paschal candle for Easter
celebrations.

Community News - CISCA House
Are you lonely? Have you got some spare time? Would you like to get involved in the local community? Do you want to get out of the house and have a bit of fun? Canvey Island Senior Citizens Association (CISCA) could be the very thing you are looking for.
CISCA is a registered charity operating
entirely on the efforts of voluntary workers
and they are urgently looking for volunteer
helpers. You can give as much or as little
time as you wish, on a regular or occasional
basis. Volunteers are wanted for all aspects
of CISCA activities, but they are particularly
interested in recruiting someone with book-
keeping experience to assist in the
management of their financial records. The
latter work could be carried out in two short
evenings during the week.
CISCA operate from their own premises
based in the Paddocks area of Canvey Island
right next to the newly established NHS
Health Centre. The association provides a
wide range of services, facilities and
recreational activities in a warm, pleasant
and welcoming environment. Senior citizens
(aged 55 and over) can meet others in similar
circumstances to their own and enjoy
companionship, thus combating loneliness.
An important part of the services
that CISCA gives is the provision of
breakfasts, snacks and a set midday
meal at economical cost to patrons
and as close to cost price as we can
manage. Also provided are a wide
range of recreational activities
including; snooker, darts, cards,
short mat bowls, coach outings,
dances, socials, and games
evenings, all at a nominal cost to
patrons. Volunteer entertainers are
also brought in as often as possible.
It is these activities that CISCA are looking
for helpers. So, if you are willing to give
something back to the community and
interested in getting some enjoyment also,
get in touch with CISCA President, Dr Alan
Whitcomb on 01268 694609 soon and find
out something about the good work that
CISCA do.

Canvey History
“Maker of Modern Canvey” by Janet Penn This wonderful article by Janet Penn of www.canveyisland.org introduces us to the Reverend Henry Hayes (1839-1900) who had a great influence on Canvey Island.
Canvey was a very different place when Rev
Hayes took up his ministry on the Island in
1873. There had been no resident Vicar
before and most of the burials, marriages and
baptisms were conducted at St Mary’s in
South Benfleet.
The island was made up of scattered farms
with a population of 289 (PO Directory
1878) if the census was to be believed. There
was a church - St Peter’s - built in 1845 but
no school, no water supply and no post
office. Over the next few years Henry’s
mission was to bring about change to
Canvey Island and that he surely did.
One of the first projects Henry embarked
upon in 1873 was to build a vicarage just
south of the village in what is now Haven
Road. This was quickly followed by the first
school on Canvey Island situated just across
the road from the church which was opened
in 1874. According to the 1882 Kelly’s
Directory there were 60 pupils registered at
the school.
The tiny church, which had been built in
1745 was too small so it was demolished and
rebuilt much bigger and grander some 20
feet further back
from the road and
dedicated to St
Katherine.
In 1889, perhaps
one of Henry’s
greatest
achievements was
bringing fresh
water to the
Island. The only
water supply the
Islanders had access to at the time was
rainwater collected from the ditches. The
parish pump - financed by public
subscription and 50 guineas from the
Corporation of the City of London - was
opened on the 5th December 1889.
After the Parish Councils Act of 1894,
Canvey’s Parish Council was formed with
five councillors. Rev. Henry Hayes was a
member of that council. Another of his ideas
was to have a bridge connecting the island to
the mainland. About a month before Henry
died, the matter of a bridge was to be
brought up at the Rochford District Council
meeting (which covered Canvey.) The
matter was postponed until the next meeting
so that Hayes could attend and put his ideas
to the Council but sadly, he was never to
make that presentation as he died on the 8th
December 1900. Further action on a bridge
did not occur until 1929.
Rev Henry Hayes was buried at Highgate
Cemetery and later a memorial window was
erected on the north side of the Nave in St
Katherine's in his memory.

Last month, pupils from Leigh Beck School’s cross country team started the first leg of the relay of the Canvey Schools Olympics torch.
The Schools Olympics are being hosted by
Leigh Beck Junior School on the 21st July
with each school on the Island taking part.
Pupils from the Island’s secondary schools
will be acting as ambassadors and marshals
on the day.
In the weeks leading up to the event an
Olympic torch will visit each school and
pupils will have the opportunity to run with
the torch to the next school. The Mayor of
Castle Point, Mrs Jackie Govier officially
started the proceedings where runners from
Leigh Beck School ran to pass the torch on
to Wintergardens school.
The event is being organised by Leigh Beck
teacher Sally McKenzie who said: “This is a
fantastic opportunity for pupils to represent
their schools and to really get involved with
the Olympic celebrations.”

At the time of the Queen’s Coronation in June 1953, Canvey Islanders were still very much recovering from the devastating flood just a few months earlier. Some people had lost everything in the flood and were probably more interested in celebrating their survival than the coronation of the new Queen.
Even so, people across the Island rallied
round to celebrate this momentous occasion
in history. Jan Guzzan remembers:
“ We had a street party where neighbours
bought out their tables and chairs and
strung red, white and blue bunting across
the roads. Everyone knew everyone and most
mums of the children down our road were
helping out with the food and drinks. At
school we had a fancy dress competition. All
the costumes were home made. I had a
newspaper dress, made from the centre
pages of the Daily Mirror, showing the new
Canvey Memories - Queen’s Coronation 1953
queen in all her finery with a
cardboard crown with ‘In The
News’ written on it. I won a tube
of Rowntrees Fruit Gums.
My mum and dad had one of the
first televisions in the road, and I
can clearly remember having a lot
of neighbours in to see the marvel
of television broadcasting the
coronation ceremony. The set was
a tiny 9 inch G.E.C. with a bakelite
case and just two control knobs on
the front.”

does a “Spell Check” for me as I go along

Unfortunately, it also underlines in Green
when it considers that I’ve used some bad
grammar. But it does go over the top and it’s
hard to type anything but short sentences
without a squiggly green underline appearing
to tell me that I’m grammatically inadequate.
Well, I DON’T CARE, it’s just a letter to my

Canvey Island Football Club
As the season moves into its final month we can consider it to have been a fairly successful one so far. The club still has an outside chance of reaching the play-offs and can look forward to a Cup Final.
The hope of an all Canvey based team Essex
Senior Cup Final was ended by Colchester
United’s heavy 4-0 defeat of Concord Rangers
in their semi-final and will now be our
opponents in the final which is to be held at
Thurrock’s Ship Lane ground on Monday
16th April - 7.45pm kick off. Colchester
United, who are the highest ranked team to
enter the competition, will be a tough team to
beat but we very much look forward to the
challenge. Hopefully we will see you there
cheering on the lads.
Off the pitch our annual Youth Football
Tournament is filling fast. It will be held at
our Park Lane Ground on Saturday 12th and
Sunday 13th May. Entry forms can be
downloaded from our website or picked up at
the club. A Race Night, Children’s Easter Egg
Hunt and a Golden Jubilee Evening
Disco are all scheduled along with our regular
Sunday evening Bingo nights. Details can
again be found on our website. Come along
and join in the fun.
Our Merry Band of helpers continue to work
their magic keeping the ground in good order. It
can be hard work so to keep themselves fit they
regularly use the club gym (as can be seen in
the photo) even though their average age is
nearly 90 (only kidding guys.) The work
they do is fantastic and is massively appreciated
by all at the Club.
