LEADERSHIP

Vs.AVIS LUNDBERGPERSONELL MANAGERLIVERPOOL FC

All great companies, greatnations and even greatfootball clubs are built onthe foundationsof inspira-

tional leadership, total loyalty tothecause, andpeoplewhogotheextramilewithoutexpecting any-thing in return. I have met manypeopleonmyjourneythroughlifewhohaveliveduptothesehighestoforders.Butoverthe lastyear IhavemetandthenwitnessedallofthesefineattributesinaladyfromLiverpoolFootballClubcalledAvisLundberg. Avis is the PersonnelManagerat the club, andhas loy-allyserveditforover12changingand at times turbulent and suc-cessfulyears.Avis,Ibelieveistheunsungheroatthecub,sheworkstirelesslybehindthescenesinherrole, she is thought by many andmany more alike, as the numberonereasonthatmakesgreatclubsand companies achieve so muchsuccess.

It is for the above reasons why IhaveselectedAvisLundberg, tobethefirst person to be interviewedfor this magazine. This interviewrevealshowtrueLeadership,Busi-ness skills, loyalty fromstaff, andteam empowerment is conductedatthehighestandmostsuccessfullevel. So,sitback, learnandenjoythis remarkable woman’s insightsof what makes successful leaderstickandsucceed………..

Avis Lundberg began working forLiverpool Football Club 12 yearsago. She was the first person-nel manager to be employed atthe club, which just employed 72peopleatthetime.Now,12yearslater,theyemploy450peopleandAvis has been instrumental in thisgrowth, still heading up the clubsHRdepartment.

The first thing I wanted to findout from Avis was about change.

Vs.JOHN HAYNES(EVERTONIAN)YOUR BUSINESS EZINE

All businesses have to deal withchange, sohowdoLFCdo it.Avissaidthatthefootballersattheclubgetverywelllookedafter.Theyareconstantly trained, coached andmentored. But this should be thesameforallofthestaff.Ifyougiveyour staff the skills, responsibilityand even accountability, theywillcopemuchbetterwithchangeandbeless likelyto leave.Oneofthebiggest changes they have had todealwithinrecenttimeswaswhenthe American and Canadian con-glomerateboughttheclubout2to3yearsago.Thishadthepotentialto causemajordisruptionandun-certaintyforthestaff,butbecauseof the back up and support fromthemanagementteamattheclub, much of the anxiety that couldhavebeenfelt, justdidn’thappen. This was fantastic, in my role asa trainer, I tell people every dayabout the importance of gainingnew skills and taking responsibil-

ity, but to hear someone likeAvisLundberg saying the same thing isinspiring.Soifdoingthesethingsispartofwhatmakesabusinesssuc-cessful, thenwhat does she thinkmakes companies fail. Well, inAvis’s opinion, many smaller com-panies get carried away with en-thusiasm, without doing enoughresearch. As she say’s “with anybusiness, thedevilisinthedetail”.The othermajor down fall peoplehaveisinaskingforhelp.Thereissomuch free help and advice outthereatthemoment,butquiteof-tenpeoplejustdon’tliketoask,orworse, areafraid to. So I supposethemessagehere isquiteclear. Ifyouarenotsure,JUSTASK!

One issue that many companiestendtostrugglewithisstaffreten-tion,butisthisanissuethatLiver-poolFootballClubhastoconsider?Avissaid,“Footballisfairlyuniquein this respect. The club is like a

So,forapremierfootballclubwhoreallytakesthetimetolookaftertheirpeoplehaslessofastaffturn-over,howaboutrecruitingtheminthe first place, what’s the magicformula for this?Apparently therearenomagicformulas.Youcandoall the testing you like, but thereis no substitute for sitting downwith someone and actually listen-ing to what they are saying. Something I hadn’t consid-eredbeforespeakingtoAvisaboutthiswaswhetheritisactuallyben-eficial for someone tobea fanoftheclub.Asitturnsout,theanswerwasnotwhatIwasexpecting.Yousee, it all depends on what theirjobwillactuallybewithintheclub.Ifforexampleyouweregoingtobeemployed at Melwood, the clubstraining ground, itwouldn’t do tobe a big fan, because the playersare wandering about all day longand people get a bit star struckanddon’tendupgettinganyworkdone.Sointhatsituation,indiffer-ence to the game would actuallybe an advantage. Alternatively, ifyouweregoingforapublicfacingjob, anextremeexampleofwhichwould be a tour guide at the sta-dium,thenbeingahugefanwoulddefinitelybebeneficial.

As a respected business leader, IwantedtoknowwhatAvisthoughtwere the qualities of leadership. With no hesitation Avis quicklyreeled off, communication, com-mitment, empathy and vision. Sohowisthestaffaffectedbytheteam’s performance on the pitch, both winning and losing? How about the current mediaspeculation over the ownership oftheclub, howdoesthisaffectthemood amongst the people there?“Itisverydifficult.Again,commu-nication is the key here.Wehavegonethroughlotsofchangebefore,butwejustneedtohookontothepositives.Peoplecanbecomepara-noid,butlittlethingscanliftspir-its.It’suptoallofustobeasopenaspossible”.
