PARISH LIFE

Those planning to attend Weekend Mass must sign up online for seats using the links providedon the parish website at https://www.sjtw.net/mass-schedule.

Masks must be worn inside our building at all times.

What’s in My Parish Backpack this week?

November 2 is the day we remember all the faithful departed, or All Souls. On this day, we pray that all those who have died—our loved ones, and also those people around the world who we will never meet—through the mercy of God, will rest in peace. In your SJTW backpack, please fi nd a plastic bag containing the angel ornament and instruction sheet. Together, recall the names of those close to you that have died. Share the stories of their lives with those around you and then write their names on your special angel ornament. This Christmas, plan on remembering them by decorating your tree with your angel ornament. Addi-tional angel ornaments are available in the parish offi ce. If you still have yet to pick up your parish backpack, you can do that in the parish offi ce or after any mass.

Introducing a new ministry at St. Joseph the Worker: The SJTW Worker Bees!

Worker Bees are parish members that have a desire to serve, have a particular skill to share, and have a little time to offer a helping hand to a parish member in need. This is an on-call ministry of sorts where your interest in serving will be matched as we receive requests for assistance. Whether lending a helping hand to another member looking to move something heavy at their home, rake some leaves, fi x a broken screen, or provide a little guidance, Worker Bees provide one-time assistance as their schedule permits.Soon we will begin recruiting groups (swarms) of Worker Bees. Stay tuned for that sign up where you can indicate areas of help that you are willing to provide. In the meantime, we are in search of a small group of parish members that are willing to offer their time and coordination in leading this SJTW Worker Bee ministry. If this is a ministry that you would like to take a lead with, we would like to hear from you as soon as possible. Contact Mike ([email protected]) or Alex ([email protected]) in the parish offi ce.

COMMITMENT TO PARISH LIFE

By now you should have received in the mail our annual report to parishioners on the status of the parish. You have done an amazing job of continuing your fi nancial support of the parish in these diffi cult times. Your consistency and gifts are greatly appreciated. I have begun giving my gift to the parish on line. Every week I receive an email saying the parish has received my gift. It is true that I needed our bookkeeper, Ann, to sit on my right and show me how to do it, but it is done. I encourage you to do the same. You will fi nd it much easier then I did because you actually know how to use your computer. I don’t have any children or grandchildren to show me how. So I depend upon staff. I have found that doing it this way during this virus ensures that I don’t forget any week and being done automatically, it is one less think on my list of things to do. Your contributions, done this way, helps the parish plan ahead while giving us adequate income to pay bills in a timely manner. I encourage you to consider this easy and effective tool in helping you be consistent in your giving to St. Joseph the Worker.

FAITH LIFE

The other day while rearranging some furniture in our house I found that afterwards the room had a new look. It made me think about how rearranging other things in my life have helped me see things from a new perspective. Before entering the seminary I took a battery of psychological tests. One of them was complete the phrase. One phrase was “I fail ….” I crossed it off and wrote “I never fail. I just don’t always succeed.” The psychologist asked me to elaborate. So I told him that to me failure is doing the same thing over and over and getting the same failed result. If I learn something from my mistake and do that thing in a new and different way, then doing it wrong the fi rst time was not a failure. I mention this because during our battle with COVID 19 we have had to look at things in brand new ways that we never imagined. I am sure none of you imagined yourself working from home while teaching your children and running the house all at the same time. You have adapted and while not necessarily happy with that need, you have done a pretty good job being placed in new circumstances. If we look at the way we deal with this virus it seems to me we can see that we need to do things differently. Maybe even imagining who God is and how God works in our life. Since I am no longer a little child, that is a good thing so I can have a more mature relationship with God. The virus can bring about good things in unexpected ways or places, if we are willing to change how we see and do things in our life.

Caring for Creation Climate change has been a key factor in increasing wildfi res in the US. The last decade was our warmest on record and the temperature continues to rise each year, leading to an increase in evapo-ration which has led to longer droughts and much longer fi re season. Since 2000, 14 forest fi res have caused at least a billion dollars in each case and this amount continues to rise as fi res increase, having a fi nancial impact on federal and state budgets as well as local banks and insurance companies which lead to an increase in costs for all of us. The actual fi res themselves contribute to health risks/costs, pollution and the cycle of continued climate warming. Rachel Cleetus of The Union of Concerned Scientists is clear that climate change, rather than forest management, is the predominant factor in increased wildfi res. She has said, “Forest management is no panacea for what we’re seeing.” Jennifer Balch, an associate professor of geography at the University of Colorado Boulder, said on CNBC, Sept. 2020, “Science is very clear that there is a direct link between warming and burning. If we don’t take the science seriously, we’re essentially putting lives and homes at tremendous risk.” While short-term changes can be made to reduce some risks from extreme weather and wildfi res, experts say that aggressive action at the national and global level to reduce emissions is the only long-term solution. There will also be information provided about making tree memorials for loved ones who have passed or who died in service to our country. If you would like to fi nd out more about planting trees or the Caring for Creation ministry, please contact Steve Kriz at 763-354-9580.
