Your career in accounting. What is an accountant?

Accountancy is among the world’s most stimulating, exciting and rewarding professions.

The role of an accountant can be dynamic and varied. At its core, the role revolves around the presentation, preparation or confirmation of an organisation’s internal or external financial information.

Why become an accountant?

Regardless of the complexity, every organisation will require the skills of an accountant to comply with government policies and procedures. This means a career in accounting and finance can offer lucrative job prospects across a number of different sectors.

Professional accountancy qualifications

In order to become a chartered accountant you will need to study a relevant professional qualification. While each professional qualification varies, completion of one of these highlights your commitment to the profession to recruiters and employers.

Over half of the FTSE 100 CEOs have a background in finance.

I’m a Chartered Accountant (FCA) having qualified with Arthur Andersen in 2002. After qualifying I worked in audit and then insolvency with Deloitte in Bristol, then became a tutor with BPP in 2004. During my career I have specialised in auditing and financial reporting. Being a qualified accountant opens the door to a wide range of opportunities in a huge variety of organisations, from tiny start-ups to multinational businesses. It provides you with the analytical and commercial skills you need to have a varied and rewarding career.

Which professional qualification will suit me?

Many employers look for professional accountancy qualifications or require employees to study towards a qualification once employed. The choice between these qualifications can be difficult, particularly when starting a career. However, your choice of role or the type of accountant you want to become will influence your preference of professional qualification.

Becoming an Accounting Technician

If you are interested in becoming an Accounting Technician, you can choose from two professional qualifications. These are the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) or Certified Accounting Technician (CAT).

Becoming a Chartered Accountant

If you choose to become a Chartered Accountant, there are many accountancy qualifications you can pursue. While we focus on ACCA, CIMA, and ICAEW qualifications, there are other options that include CIPFA and ICAS. You may choose to study one of these qualifications after studying to become an Accounting Technician.

Visas and immigration

If you are a non-EU/EEA National, you will need a visa that allows you to study in the UK. Most students will apply for a General Student Visa (Tier 4 Visa under the Points Based System – PBS) to study in the UK. Under the PBS, which may change from time to time, you must be sponsored by an institution such as BPP University, which is registered with the UK Visa and Immigration office (UKVI), which is part of the Home Office, as a Tier 4 Sponsor. There are other visa types (for example: Dependant Visa, Post Study Work Visa), which will allow you to study in the UK.

If you are already in the UK and hold a visa, the international office at BPP University will advise you if your status will allow you to study with us or if you must apply for a Tier 4 Visa. For information on visas, how to apply, guidance notes and application forms, please visit the UKVI website.
