Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2008-09, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nations leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as

leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impres-sive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illi-nois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State Uni-versity and Youngstown State University. The Horizon Leagues primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms of athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the Leagues belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes collegiate experience. The Horizon Leagues goals

are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to cre-ate an a liation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports nine for men (base-ball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and eld, outdoor track and eld and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and eld, outdoor track and eld, tennis and volleyball). In all sports, all teams participate in their respective postseason League championships regardless of regular-season performance, allowing all student-athletes an opportunity to qualify for NCAA championships. The League receives automatic bids to NCAA champion-ships in baseball, mens and womens basketball, mens golf, mens and womens

soccer, softball, mens and womens tennis, and womens volleyball. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the Amateur Sports Capital of the World, with o ces in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Build-ing, Victory Field and the NCAA national of- ce.

A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwest-ern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwest-ern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added womens sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference in-cluded current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current mem-bers, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history, with Youngstown State joining in 2001 and Val-paraiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nations top ten conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes experience by upgrading the Leagues market and competitive positions.

ATHLETIC SUCCESS In the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented suc-cess on the national stage, highlighted by three Sweet Sixteen appearances (But-ler 2003, 2007; Milwaukee 2005) and eight wins in the NCAA Mens Basketball Championship in the past six seasons. In other sports, League teams have won at least one game in their respective NCAA Championships each of the last six seasons in mens soccer (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-07), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in womens soccer three of the last four seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Green Bays womens basketball team added to that rsum with a victory in the 2007 NCAA Womens Basketball Championship. Butlers Victoria Mitchell became the Leagues rst NCAA individual cham-pion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and then nished fourth at the 2005 NCAA Cross Country Championships. ACADEMIC SUCCESS Horizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past seven semes-ters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 600 for the fall 2007 and spring 2008 semesters. Forty-eight student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2007-08, while 14 earned Academic All-America honors, including a pair of rst-team se-lections.

COMMUNITY SERVICE In addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day. The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis during its annual summer meeting, while the League, it schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual womens basketball champi-onship. On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more. SPORTSMANSHIP One of the Horizon Leagues points of emphasis is fostering collegial envi-ronments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge,

which is signed each season by student-athletes, coaches, o cials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events. DEMOGRAPHICS Horizon League institutions boast a combined enrollment of more than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the Leagues Mid-west footprint. League media markets include ve of the nations top 35 in Chi-cago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than ten million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nations television audience.

GOVERNANCE The Horizon League is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of the ten member institutions chief executive o cers. Dr. David Sweet, President of Youngstown State, serves as Board Chair through June 30, 2010. Ron Strollo, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Youngstown State, serves as chair of the Executive Council, and Christine Moeller, Assistant Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Cleveland State, is the Second Delegate, while Sheila Patterson of Cleveland State serves as chair of the Faculty Athletics Repre-sentatives.

LEADERSHIP Jonathan B. (Jon) LeCrone is in his 17th year as Commissioner of the Horizon League, having been named to the position on May 11, 1992, and is the ninth-longest tenured commissioner among the 33 Division I conferences. He is the fth commissioner in League history, succeeding Daniel B. Tucker DiEdwardo (1989-92), James W. Sha er (1984-89), Cecil N. Coleman (1980-84) and James J. McCa erty (1979-80). LeCrone is in the rst year of a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council after recently completing a ve-year term on the NCAA Division I Mens Basketball Committee.

VISIBILITY The Horizon League has enhanced its media visibility with a number of ini-tiatives. The League is in the fourth year of a ve-year agreement with ESPN that includes selected regular-season mens basketball action (ESPN2) and the mens championship game (ESPN) and features increased exposures each year on ESPNU plus inclusion in the annual OReilly ESPNU BracketBusters, one of college basketballs premier in-season events. In addition, the Horizon League has partnered with CBS College Sports to provide the o cial web site at www.horizonleague.org, which o ers the most comprehensive coverage of Horizon League teams on the net. HORIZON LEAGUE NETWORK The Horizon League is a recognized leader in video streaming, through the Horizon League Network (HLN), having produced more than 800 free, live events in the past three years, with plans to web cast more than 400 during the 2008-09 academic year. In addition to live games, HLN includes highlight vignettes of all 19 League championships, weekly highlight videos during the mens and womens basketball season and other special programming covering Horizon League institutions, coaches and student-athletes. McCAFFERTY TROPHY The Horizon League annually awards the McCa erty Trophy in recognition of its all-sports champion in honor of its rst commissioner, James J. McCa erty. Cleveland State won its rst McCa erty Trophy in school history following the 2007-08 academic year. The Vikings also captured their rst Mens All-Sports Award, while Milwaukee claimed the womens honor for the third straight year and seventh time in the past eight years. As an indication of the Leagues com-petitive balance, eight of its ten schools won at least one team championship last year.

HORIZON LEAGUE POINTS OF PRIDE The Horizon League was ranked 11th in conference RPI for the 2007-08 season according to Collegiate Basketball News, which was an improvement of one spot from the previous year and eight slots better than three short years ago. The #11 ranking also was the Leagues best since also being 11th in 2001 and one shy of its best ranking on record (10th in 1992 and 1998). The League ranked ahead of such conferences as the Mid-Ameri-can (12th), Colonial (13th), Sun Belt (14th) and West Coast (15th); the League was actually ranked 10th in the nation for a portion of the season before dropping just below Conference USA. Four League teams were ranked in the top 100 in RPI, including But-ler (17th), Cleveland State (65th), Wright State (86th) and Valparaiso (98th). The League boasted three teams in national postseason tourna-ments Butler (NCAA), Cleveland State (NIT) and Valparaiso (CBI) for the rst time since 2003. Four teams won 20 or more games for the rst time in the Leagues 29-year history Butler (a League-record 30), Valparaiso (22), Cleve-land State (21) and Wright State (21). League teams have won at least one game in the NCAA Tourna-ment four straight seasons and seven times in the last decade, includ-ing three Sweet Sixteen appearances in the past six years (Butler 2003 and 2007; Milwaukee 2005). The League claims eight NCAA Tournament wins in that six-year span, which is more than such conferences as the Colonial (6), Moun-tain West (6), West Coast (6) and WAC (5) and just one shy of the nine by the Missouri Valley, despite receiving nearly half as many bids in that time (8 to the Valleys 14).

THREE STARTERS, NEWCOMERS LOOK TO TAKE GUINS TO HIGHER HEIGHTS For the second straight season, the Youngstown State mens basketball programs fortunes rest on a mixture of veteran players and an in ux of talented newcomers. And like last season, the Penguins will have to replace their top two leading scorers Byron Davis and John Barber who combined for 29.1 points per game in 2007-08. Davis averaged a team-high 15.5 points per game and ranked fourth in the Horizon League in scoring while Barber turned in career-best 13.6 points per game and became the 31st YSU player to score at least 1,000 career points. However, returning starters senior Jack Liles, sophomores Vance Cooksey and Vytas Sulskis along with senior guard Mikko Niemi, sophomore forward Dan Boudler and nine newcomers will be called upon for more prominent roles in the 2008-09 campaign. With the return of three starters, the Penguins core remains solid at three critical positions post, point guard and wing for fourth-year Head Coach Jerry Slocum. I think anytime you have experience in our league I think that is really important, Slocum said. Liles, a post player with double-double potential, is the Guins top returning scorer at 9.7 points per game. Sulskis, a CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Freshman All-America selection, set a YSU freshman record with 46 3-pointers and is poised for another breakout season at the wing. Cooksey turned in an impressive rookie campaign at point guard dishing out a team-high 88 assists and leading the team with a 79.7 free-throw percentage. Although the Penguins return three players with at least 20 games started, Slocum described the competition for court time as heated. I will say this, though, that this is one of the rst times in my whole coaching career that playing time is up for grabs more this year than any other time, Slocum said. We are going to have a

very intense, interesting and competitive preseason and early fall time. Slocum also likes the balance and depth of the team but with nine new players there are expected uncertainties and a lot of teaching. I think we have some very good basketball players, Slocum said. What they are going to be able to do with our schedule and our league is an unknown. The number one thing they need to understand is its a major transition from where they are coming to the level of intensity that you have to play in this league and with our schedule, Slocum added. They are not going to be able to take possessions o . They are going to have to learn to play every possession. They are going to have learn how much work you have to put in to be good at our level.

Frontcourt With 62 games started on the low block, Liles enters his senior campaign as the most experienced player in the post and on the team. The Odenton, Md., native needs 391 points, 97 rebounds and 20 blocks to become the rst player in school history to post 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocks in a career. He already ranks fourth all-time in blocks and needs two more to move into third on the career list. Jack has made great strides from his freshman year until now, both physically and in the skills of his game, Slocum said. He has matured physically and has the ability to put up good numbers. Boudler, a 6-foot-8 forward from Louisville, Ohio, should see more minutes on the low block this season. In 2007-08, he appeared in just 10 games before sitting out the rest of the season with a broken hand. Boudler shot 41.9 percent from the oor and averaged 2.8 points and 3.5

rebounds in 14.5 minutes per game. In the o season, Slocum shored up the post position by signing a trio of gifted newcomers 6-foot-9 junior forward Dallas Blocker, 6-foot-8 freshman forward Eddie DHaiti and 6-foot-7 junior forward Sirlester Martin. Blocker, a junior college transfer, averaged 5.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while helping Cloud County Community College to a 21-12 overall record last season. A Honorable-Mention Class 6A all-state selection, DHaiti ranked as one of the top 40 seniors in Florida by FloridaHoops.com and Hoop Scoop and was considered a four-star recruit by the recruiting services. During his senior season, DHaiti, who hails from Orlando, Fla., averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds per contest at Oak Ridge High School and was named rst-team All-Metro, First-Team All-Orange Country and second-team All-Central Florida.

Senior Jack Liles has appeared in 88 games and started 62 times during his career.

got great athleticism and hes an unsel sh basketball player and has a good basketball IQ. DeAndre is a true leader in terms of the point guard position. He can nish well around the rim, he can drive the basketball and shoot the ball. But the thing that has impressed me was how he made the other players on his team better. Bright is a player that Slocum feels can pick up the scoring output after the loss of Barber and Davis. Kelvin is a guy we are going to count on for scoring, Slocum said. He has a pro ciency to score the basketball and we need that. We need a real boost in our back court from DeAndre and Kelvin. Parks, who earned his associates degree in just one year at Sheridan College, is a 6-foot-6 sophomore wing who averaged 14.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game as a freshman. Parks made a team-high 70 3-pointers and scored 425 points for Sheridan. Redshirt freshman Blair Rozenblad, a 6-foot-3 guard who sat out last season, was a second-team all-state selection coming out of Kennedy Catholic High School after averaging 15 points and eight rebounds per game as a senior. Ashen Ward, a 6-foot-3 true freshman guard, was the 2006-07 Ohio Division III Player of the Year and rst-team All-Ohio selection after averaging 14.7 points and six rebounds per game as a junior. Ash is a really big, strong and talented basketball player, Slocum said. What is really exciting about him is his potential to grow into a really special basketball player in our league. As a senior, Ward was named third-team Division III All-Ohio and McDonalds All-American, averaging 13.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. Umbel, who set the state single-season steals record with 176, was named Division II First-Team All-Ohio as a senior after averaging 16 points, 5.1 rebounds,

Martin, a junior-college transfer from Memphis, Tenn., scored more than 400 points and grabbed 300 rebounds during his sophomore season at Walters State Community College. He helped the Senators nish the season with a 32-3 mark, which included a 28-game winning streak. Sirlester has a great nose for the basketball, Slocum said. Hes a great rebounder. Hes kind of a glue guy that does a lot of the little things. Sirlester, Dallas and Eddie are also solid defensive players.

Backcourt The backcourt owns a unique combination of youth, experience, depth and versatility for the 2008-09 season. With Cooksey and Niemi returning at the point guard slot and Sulskis with a year of experience at the wing, the competition along the perimeter will be intense. Cooksey has the capability of putting up big numbers from the point guard position after scoring in double gures seven times. Sulskis, who averaged 10.7 points per game against Horizon League opponents, shot 38 percent from behind the 3-point arc. Newcomers Kelvin Bright, DeAndre Mays, Tom Parks and Ashen Ward along with redshirt freshman Blair Rozenblad, senior Zack Rebillot and freshman Ben Umbel will all be vying for time in the backcourt. Bright, a 6-foot-4 junior college transfer, was an Honorable-Mention Division I NJCAA All-American as a sophomore, ranking sixth in Division I in scoring with 24.2 points per game at Hagerstown Community College. Mays, a 6-foot-2 junior point guard from Hill College, posted 13.1 points and 4.5 assists per game and named second-team All-North Texas Conference as a sophomore. I think DeAndre can be a very special point guard in this league, Slocum said. He has shown that through his junior college experience. Hes a big guard, hes

Sophomore Vytas Sulskis was named CollegeIn-sider.com Mid-Major Freshman All-American.

7.1 steals and 5.4 assists per game

Summary The Penguins enter the 2008-09 campaign with experience at three vital positions but also with many questions due to the amount of newcomers to the program. The balance and overall depth give the Penguins multiple scoring options but Slocum still stresses the importance of defending the basket. There are a lot of areas where we need to improve our basketball team but we have to be better at the defensive end of the oor, Slocum said. Slocum also stated that he feels this team will improve the more they play together. A key is that they are going to have to gel together, he said. I think that this is a team, as the year goes on, will get better and better and better because of the fact that they are so new. We are going to need all of these guys expertise at what they are good at to kind of blend in and mesh together.

SCHEDULE NOTES The Penguins play 29 regular-season games for the third con-secutive year and just the fourth time in school history. The Guins face eight 20-win teams and seven squads that made the postseason in 2007-08. YSU opens Horizon League play at home against Valparaiso on Dec. 4 and closes league play at Valparaiso on Feb. 28. Head Coach Jerry Slocum will coach his 1,000th career game when the Penguins host Butler on Dec. 4. The Penguins play a total of 15 home games this season, six of which are doubleheaders. The Guins take on Maryland for the rst time in school history. The matchup against the Terrapins is also the Guins rst game against an ACC foe since facing Georgia Tech on Dec. 29, 1992. Youngstown State faces Allegh-eny for the first time since Dec. 18, 1935. The 15 home contests are the most games played at the Beeghly Center since the 2004-05 season. The Guins travel to North Carolina for rst-ever contests against High Point and Charlotte. The busiest month is January when the Guins play 10 times. The 18 conference games will tie a school record. This is the second straight season YSU will play 18 conference games. As members of the Mid-Continent Conference, YSU played 18 games three times (1993-94, 1994-95 and 1995-96). YSU is again among the pool of teams involved in ESPNs Bracket-Buster concept. The Penguins will play at home this season and host Bu alo in a return game from the 2008 Bracket Buster.
